Thanks for another good lesson! On a side note, I've taken apart some grease choked reels and the metal underneath the choking grease was immaculate, while the uncoated metal was rusty and pitted. Not sure if it's good or not, but this has led me to probably over oil and grease some reels.

Over greasing will prevent corrosion, but when it dries, it will clog the reel. Thanks for the note - Dennis

Not looking for a "pat on the back," just telling a nice story. When my grandfather and father passed away, I was left with literally almost a basement full of old fishing tackle. Some stuff had real collectors value, which I sold, other stuff not so much. So rather than toss this old stuff in the trash, I spent a few weeks rehabbing these old rods and reels. What a load of functional tackle I ended up with, but what a job too! I bought a couple big spools of Ande mono for cheap off Ebay, and spooled each up with new line. When all done I drove down to City Island/Orchard Beach in the Bronx NY on a few Saturdays, and gave any under privileged fishermen I saw, some whom were fishing with line wrapped around a stick, "new" rod and reel setups, hooks, swivels, sinkers, etc. I spent time I could spare, and some elbow grease, on gear most guys would have tossed in a dumpster, and instead my efforts made these guys/kids, lose their minds with joy, which made the effort well worth it. This channel gave me the idea to spare this stuff a trip to the dump, and instead give this tackle a "second chance" so thanks, Dennis!

Dennis, I could send you photos of some of the most grease-choked reels I’ve seen in my reel work. There have been some very bad ones. One of the absolute worst was a Mitchell 401 that I got for my left-handed grandson. It was unbelievable. I think I spent over three hours on just cleaning. The outside appearance of a vintage reel sometimes doesn’t in any way tell anything about the health or eventual demise of a reel. That’s why I am so handicapped in finding good reels for my collection. Rarely if ever do I get to actually lay my hands on a reel before I buy it. I have to go by photos. Because of this I’ve been burned a few times. I’ve gotten pretty good at asking questions and spotting things on photos. I’ve also gotten to know some very good used vintage reel sellers on eBay and other websites that I can depend on. I’ve also learned more than a few bush fixes for vintage reels. This was a great video presentation Dennis. I’m glad you did it. I finished a Roddy Gyro 225 today that turned out spectacularly. I also got in a very nice reel lot of three vintage saltwater spinning reels. Two of them are quite rare. All three are in excellent condition. I got very lucky! - Chris

Thanks Chris - yes, a few pictures for the wall of shame would be interesting. That Roddy sounds ready to fish - Good luck getting the line wet - Dennis

Great job of coming up with a bearing to give that Reel a 2nd Chance. I liked the older Reels especially the Shakespeare.

Heyyyyyy Dennis... Amazed at how much dried gummy grease can slow down a reel! In your opinion.... do you suggest cleanin and grease & oil our reels in fall when we put them away for winter in a cool spot or is spring better just before usin them again please? Thanks Kindly again!

Either is OK, but I prefer the fall for two reasons. The first is that any film or salt or corrosive elements get removed prior to storage and the other is that the reel is ready to go fishing when the first bite occurs - Thanks for asking - Dennis

How did you determine that the bearing was bad/frozen?

I hold the bearing by the outside rim and try to turn the inner race. If it doesn't turn it is frozen - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Great stuff as always. If I wanted to send you a reel for servicing how would I go about doing that. I know I've seen that info somewhere on one of your videos. Thanks!

Hey Dennis, I have a couple of questions - one in regards to vintage reels and another with regard to a brand that I have not worked on before Question 1: Have you ever worked on a Cobra fishing reel? What is the history of the brand? I picked one up at a trade show and gave it the full service and now it's working great, I'd just like a little info on the company history because I can't seem to find it on the internet. The reel is a Cobra 33. Questions 2: Have you ever worked on a reel from the Toadfish company? If so, where would you recommend looking for parts? Again, I've had trouble locating schematics, parts lists, and replacement parts for the reel. Any insight you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

The Cobra reels are trade reels made in Japan in the 1970s if I remember. I think some were made by Daiwa or Compac, but I could be wrong. I have worked on a few, but I don't have a video on the service. I have not worked on the Toadfish. I noticed through a search online that the reel is sold be several merchants including Tackle Direct. You may want to contact them to get advice on where you can get the parts - Thanks for asking - Dennis
