very nice video on the mitchell phazer PH 1000....everything was illustrated but the bail...when you get time I need to see how to engage the spring that release the bail. THANKS

I will do that if I can locate the reel. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Hi Dennis. Nicely done, those newer reels can be intimidating for me. I like my Greenies and z series better, they are so much easier to work on. Thanks for the video.

You are welcome. I'm not sue I would but this reel as a standalone, but I got it in a group lot purchase and it is a nice entry level reel. Stay well - Dennis

Informative video. Thanks. What would cause front to back play on the spool / spindle? Reel is a Shimano Ci4 stradic 1000F. I’ve taken it apart down to under the clutch but haven’t taken the body apart.

Have 16 Mitchell’s of various types all from France. Personally I am not interested in a newer Chinese-made Mitchell. I’m looking forward to when you do a video of one of the large saltwater French Mitchell’s. In servicing a 488 a part called an Anti Inertia Brake that attaches to the bail trip arm under the rotor had dry-rooted and just fell out in pieces. Took a while to find what the part was and locate it on the schematic. Now I can’t find a replacement part anywhere. This part inhibits the rotor from turning after you open the bail to cast. It is quite small. Do you know a source for such a part? It is actually nothing more than a very small rubber band. By the way I use the exact same set of yellow and black micro-screwdrivers. Have had them for years. Thank you Dennis!

That's a piece of resin and it happens frequently. I do not know a source. I have used a bush fix here. I take a small spring like those in a ball point pen or an old bail trip spring on some reels and attach it to the stud behind the bail trip. I then take a wire cutter and clip the spring just proud of the end of the stud. It seems to work. What larger reels are you looking for in particular? Thanks again - Dennis BTW - the newer Chinese Mitchell reels are Mitchell in name only. They bear no resemblance to the older ones you are collecting

2nd Chance Tackle I’ve been working on 2 Mitchell 488s. The trip mechanism anti inertia brake is a part I have difficulty finding. But in general I’ve had problems with working on the bail spring, the needle bearing on the main gear and other issues. I have a 302N, 396 PUM, and 496 in addition to the 488s. Many of these have parts in common as they are similar in so many ways. The 488 is the only one I have had issues with but a video on any of these would be fantastic. All of these reels have a similar main shaft that ends with a plastic or Bakelite piece that has a tendency to break when you really tighten down the drag. I don’t tighten them hard for that reason. I like to hope that one day I might have to while fishing but with this pandemic I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever fish again. Your videos are a great break in my boredom. I’m going to take photos of the Pflueger Sea Star 1050 I just finished and send them. I think it turned out nice. I don’t enjoy painting reels however!

2nd Chance Tackle Dennis: I just found out that a Mitchell 488 Anti Inertia Brake is the same part as a bail bumper for a 306 or 406. They don’t have the same part number but if you look closely at the 306 and 406 schematic you can see it. How in the world would you ever find that out unless someone who knew told you. This is a great business you’re in. (Sarcasm!) I know you said mechanical ability, engineering skill, and patience but you need to add investigative detective ability also. I am beginning to understand even better why you don’t collect fishing reels. Well, if I had collected what I worked on before I retired I would have collected grand pianos and pipe organs - not exactly feasible is it.

2nd Chance Tackle I forgot to add. I was being nice earlier but current Mitchell reels are basically junk when compared to the vintage reels I collect. I have a 300A that is incredibly over-engineered like you said. I also fervently believe a Mitchell 302 is one of the finest saltwater spinning reels ever made. That’s why I collect these vintage reels - they constantly remind me that previous generations were extremely gifted and talented and many today are not nearly so smart as they think they are. This is certainly true with musical instruments. By the way, you need to do another KZbin live broadcast. The first one was fantastic and helped fans like me really get to know you even better!!! - The Reverend Christopher T; Jenkins (my old job title)

You are being nice. I concur with your assessment of the modern Mitchells. I have been thinking about a follow up with questions and answers as I get a lot of questions in the comment sections of my video. I appreciate the suggest. I will do a follow up, just not sure when. Stay well - Dennis
