Dennis - thanks to you and this video, I just spent the morning disassembling, cleaning, oiling and greasing a Pflueger Akron No. 1893L someone had left to me. Looking forward to giving it a 2nd Chance in the Spring!

That is my favorite reel of all the old school baitcasters. Mine is so smooth operating. It's my "go to" reel for springtime bullhead fishing here in southern Minnesota. Mine is paired to a vintage spring steel rod. I really like the fact that all the gears are metal ensuring that this reel will have a long life.

I just got a vintage Pfuger Nooby reel, seems to be similar to this.. I am amassing a small collection of vintage reels, and thanks to your videos Ive gotten most of them back into working order :) I do have a few I'm struggling with, perhaps I'll send them to you... thanks for the videos, and your accent brings me back.. I grew up outside Philly and spent many summer weekends at the Jersey shore 😂

Thanks for the note and for watching. You need to be careful when you are looking to purchase an older reel. Test all of the features and functions before you commit to buy. Parts are very hard to find on these reels. If the reel is simply sluggish, but working, it can generally be restored. Happy to bring back the shore memories - Best wishes - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle I have been finding them at garage sales, for very low prices :) Most have been siting in garages/ attics/ basements for decades and the grease has dried up/ evaporated, leaving things locked up, or at least sluggish.. What solvent is recommended for cleaning these reels? Alcohol/ soapy water aren't always enough, so i was thinking about using mineral spirits or something similar?
@2ndChanceTackle7 ай бұрын
I generally just use a heavy spray of penetrating oil and let the parts sit for a while before I do the work - that oil helps to loosen up the tough grease and get me going on the cleaning - Thanks for asking - Dennis

As always great video. Timing is perfect, for something different I pulled a couple of Shakespeare baitcasters out of a yard sale bin to clean up just a couple days ago.

Thank you for the video. I took my Akron apart and cleaned it up and reassembled. Still can’t figure out how to cast it. I have several others that I inherited as well. Going to go through them all. I have several old model Pflueger reels. Need to go ahead and clean and oil them all and see how well they work.

Dennis, I sent you an e-mail about a reel I got earlier tonight. It could be a pretty nice bargain but only time will tell. It is a rare Mitchell “Sport” 488 saltwater reel. I think I already have 4 or 5 Mitchell 488s but this one was special. I already have a stunning Mitchell “Sport” 498. This 488 I got tonight will match that 498. I had never seen one like this before so of course I couldn’t just let it go to somebody else. Look at the e-mail as I have a few questions for you. These old Pfleuger conventional reels are such beautiful reels if you can find them in good condition. I just wish I had the vision to be able to use reels like this. Thanks Dennis! - Chris

Thanks for the amazing video, Dennis! I am lucky enough to have an incredible condition Akron 1894 with most - if not all - of the original line. Safe to say, it’s my pride and joy! However, I do have a few questions about it. Firstly, the clicker is incredibly loud when reeling in normally, but when I reel backwards, the clicker is nice and quiet - still there and functional. I feel as though this is backwards. Is there anything wrong with it? Secondly, I only have a vague idea of when it was manufactured. Somewhere in the mid-late 30’s is my guess. There’s no other numbers other than the model number, 1894. The knobs on the handle are exactly the same as the one in the video, if that helps at all. Do you have any idea as to when the reel was made? Thanks so much. Tight lines!

The reel is not as old as you think. It was made in the late 1950s and discontinued in the early 1960s - Thanks for asking -Dennis

How does this reel cast, is there a button release
@2ndChanceTackle3 ай бұрын
This is a direct drive reel without an anti-reverse or free spool lever. You simply throw it out and reel it back in, When you cast, the reel spool and handle will turn backwards and when you reel it in, you turn it forwards. - Dennis
