It’s time for another street food tour! This time, we have the help of a Vietnamese local living in Hoi An. Suppose you’ve seen our previous street food challenge in Vietnam. In that case, you’ll know that we went to a bustling night market in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and were overwhelmed by the options… and therefore ended up having some less-than-Vietnamese options.
This time, we’ve removed the $5 budget to try a wide variety of local Vietnamese street foods. We have a long list of types of foods & drinks that we want to try, many of which we would never know what they were without the help of a local! We try a variety of drinks, sweet treats, snacks, vegetarian foods, meat dishes, and desserts. Come along as we spend a lovely warm evening in the Old Town of Hoi An, eating our way through the Night Market!
Special Thanks to Julie, who kindly came along and helped us explore the fantastic Vietnamese food scene!

4:44 She translated a bit incorrectly. The dumplings are made with tapioca flour (not sticky rice) and the fillings are with shrimps and mung beans. I love those dumplings too, especially the vegie (or mung bean) ones.

In the US, they make it mostly with bbq pork and very little shrimp since meat is cheaper than seafood. I haven’t found any with mung beans here which I miss a lot!

Yep been there 😀 great in there. We had to laugh when you said everything is sweeter in Hoi An we saw ‘sweet potato fries’ we love sweet potato- turned out it was chips with sugar on 😆 One thing I hoped wouldn’t happen there was it becoming too commercialised - the 2nd time we went there was a Mr Bean bar do hope that sort of thing isn’t taking hold. PS could see in the background those annoying lit up spinner things they throw in the air. Grrrrreat vid we can’t wait to go back Cheers 🍺🍺
@2Passports1Dream
@2Passports1Dream 2 жыл бұрын
Wow no way!! That’s not the sweet potato fries I know 😂😅 definitely is a place for someone with a sweet tooth- we fit in perfectly! It didn’t feel to commercialised when we were there… but then again there weren’t THAT many foreign tourists so maybe that’s played a role!

of all the food vids I have seen about food tours on here and I don't know if that's how she is or if your vid was edited so it didn't have her talking much but this lady, the guide, doesn't seem like she was that engaged or present with you. Seems like there was no chemistry in the way you all interacted... She also didn't explain or translate things well (comparing to other food guides)...Anyway, good job for trying all the various food items.

I think how Viets define vegetarian is different than how Westerners do it in that they don't consider the fish sauce as a non-vegetarian item. Unless you're at a vegetarian restaurant, just beware of things like that. Banh bot loc is not a good choice for those unfamiliar to Viet cuisine as it's made of tapioca flour, which is very chewy and foreigners are not familiar with that. It also contains a whole shrimp, which foreigners don't like eating the shell and tail. Also, that's not green bean, it's mung bean (possibly the kind with the green skin still on). I don't think she was a very good food guide in that the food she showed you like the ice cream, kumquat green tea, etc., were the best or most unique stuff in that market.

Eventhough your local guide seem really nice but there are few things haven't been fully translated well. Just a little bit of explain about some of the food you had ;) 1. Bánh bột lọc which actually made from corn starch, tapioca or cassava powder (that made it chewy). In Hoi An, it is normally serve with fry shallot, green onion oil and fish sauce on top. Different regions in Vietnam have differ style and taste as well. 2. All type of "chè" in Vietnam should be mixed before eaten :) Luckily you had "tào phớ" so I will forgive 3. "Cơm hến" is super famous in HoiAn and well known for its flavour and dedication of the cook. It is difficult to prepare millions of tiny river clam or river mussel. Last but not least, I always get trigger when someone call "bánh tráng nướng" as vietnamese pizza. Lots of Vietnamese say that too but I totally disagree. Imagine someone made "Phở" and someone call it "Vietnamese Ramen" XD

Really loving your content! About Mót at 10:26, I discovered the place when they just opened a few years back. The drink was so good, I came back several times all the way from Da Nang just for it. I even made acquaintance with the owner, and he told me that I can buy the drink in half-litter bottles for 30k VND each. That's like 2x value deal, and almost no one knows about this secret 😆

I love the fact that they actually use a biodegradable straw in Vietnam while the rest of the world is still using plastic straws which is extremely harmful to the environment. The irony here it is the rest of the world that banging on the drums and blow the horns about protecting the environment.
