When Granny Haze had tears in her eyes, I think that this is the biggest accolade you can give an artist. That their work move you so much that you had such a reaction. Clear sign that the artist is doing something right.

Justice is my all time favorite album, there are ZERO weaknesses on it. This album is what got me into the older thrash Metallica when I was in high school in the early 2000s. I had never heard anything like it at all, and played the CD on a loop until I wore out two copies and had to get a 3rd. I grew up in the 90s so the black album, load and reload were constantly played by my father, but this album opened my eyes to the amazing world of heavy metal/thrash, and I haven't been the same since, in the most wonderful of ways.

It's amazing how this song is a great metaphor for PTSD and the physical shit it causes after long periods of mental anguish, delusions, and hallucinations, isn't it? I got shot at the bottom edge of my frag plate, broke the bone underneath, and knocked the air out of me. A piece of penetrated, but not deep enough, but it produced enough blood for them to assume it was worse than it was and call for an evac. Got a stitch, some ice cream, and went back out to work the next day. Didn't think about for years and one day I woke up to scared and undeserving to live.

People born between, say, 1945 and 1960, grew up with Rock'n'Roll and Beat music. Some of them lost their path, others stuck true to the music of their childhood, and some, like me, ventured into metal early on. I was around 10 years old when Zeppelin, Purple, Cooper, Sabbath - you name them - kicked it all off, and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be listening to metal some 50 years later. Metal up your ass, and up the irons!

I'll never forget being shown this music video in 10th grade in my history class. As a metalhead, I was shocked and overjoyed that my teacher would show something like this. We even set up our desks on their sides and built "trenches" with them to emulate the trenches of WWI while we watched. Seeing my classmates react to one of my favorite songs emotionally was truly a great experience for someone who always felt peripheral and like an outsider. This song has always moved me.

The movie Johnny Got His Gun, was a fictional story based on the same titled book. The book however was based on the true story of, Ethelbert "Curley" Christian the first and only surviving quadruple amputee from Canada during WW1. If you have some time read up on him its actually a very good story.

My Grandfather was at the liberation of Buchenwald and the thing's he told me are etched into my soul. The way he described the objects made of human skin(the General made each of the solider's walk by a table with lamps, pillows etc made from the skin of the prisoner's)so they would be forced to see up.close the evil of the Bitch of Buchenwald and the Nazi's. After the war he never slept a single night without screaming at the top of his lungs "RUDY! RUDY! RUDY NO!".....he never explained what happened....I wish he had been able to tell someone just so he wouldn't have had to take it to his grave alone.

I agree, a lot of times reactors are so distracted by the video that they lose sight of the song, especially since a lot of videos have little to do with the actual song. This one isn’t like that but the song by itself doesn’t have all the movie parts in it either so those distract from the actual song.

Johnny Got His Gun has been called the most powerful anti-war movie in which not a single shot was fired. it is powerful and worth the watch. If my memory is correct, the Metallica guys wrote the song and while talking about the concept (someone alive but totally unable to communicate and interact with the world) someone told them about the movie. A dear friend died of cancer and I got the music for the opening 4 notes to this song as a tattoo in tribute. Her experience and all the medications she was on reminded me of Johnny. Any metalhead who hears those 4 notes, knows the song right away.

I love that you're here, I feel so happy seeing your faces and feeling that great love for the music. I too am an over-50 rocking mama, not a grandma yet but I do have a grandpuppy! My daughter watched this video with me tonight. She had never seen the video and she and I were wiping away tears too. I look forward to many more videos from you two. Actually, Jonny got his gun as a movie came out in 1971. The book was published in 1938 but I definitely think there's some flexiblity in the translation of adapting literature to cinema. Then certainly to music which came in '88. There's a thorough line of truth to the concept and morals regardless whether it came before Vietnam or otherwise. Edit; either way, I love watching you guys react and talk about this.

I love that you two are so willing to give bands like Metallica not only a shot, but actually are open minded enough to enjoy the music. Thanks so much for this one. Honestly a classic and always a favorite of mine. You two are so fun and always show age is just a number. Much love ladies. Thanks for this one!

"I think that every president and general should sit down and watch this video" Mesmerized Grannies right here!! My Mom, who is 80 this august, loved "One"! I was starting guitar IN '88-'89 and the song was on MTV. I would walk into the house and she would be tapping her foot to it, mesmerized!!! Next song hahahaha!! Anthrax: "Among the Living" The Album "Among the Living" was dedicated to Cliff Burton (Metallica) after his tragic death. He was replaced by Jason Newsted that you see here, on his first full length album appearance)

Great reaction. My dad was a Vietnam Vet and he didn’t talk too much about the war but he was a highly decorated soldier and received a Silver Star. He had nightmares till the day he died in 2019. I miss him but he is now free.

I love the channel so far but I only have one request: I’d like to see more commentary on the lyrics. I know some of them are hard to understand, but perhaps you guys could pull up the lyrics after listening and tell us what your interpretation is? I love that you gave commentary on the meaning of this song and I’d like to see more of your insight on what the songs are about, especially since you’ve both lived through so many eras of rock. Otherwise, love the channel and you’ve definitely got a new subscriber in me! And you’re both beautiful!

I don’t know why, I’ve heard this song and seen the video countless times, but watching you two grand dames watch it made me cry. Maybe just made me think of the mothers behind the sons who die in war, I’m not sure. But this song struck me more than it ever has in 30 years.

My mother is a disabled Vietnam veteran who served 8yrs during the Vietnam War. She is now partially paralyzed and dying a slow painful death due to service. No she wasn't "boots on the ground" in Vietnam but she paid the price for her country. .....to this day she doesn't regret the choices she made being a Marine Gunny. I see her in a wheelchair unable to walk without help but she is a Devil Dog to the core of her being. Once a Marine always a Marine.

This is one of those songs that 30+ years later, is just as current as it was 100 years ago. The depth of creativity and meaning is huge. From the way the music starts out peaceful and then "devolves" into a faster more chaotic machine-gunning as the war victim's own mind is losing it, the drumming of SOS, and so on is genius. Love your videos, keep it up.

My grandffather fought in WWII in the pacific theater. He would always say he was a cook in the Navy. Grandma once quietly said he was also a gunner. I never asked anything further.. My dad served in Vietnam. I am a coward, too old at this point to enlist. My dad said Vietnam was a summer camp. He was in artillery, not the razor's edge. Still. I can not help but look up to my grandfather. He saved the World..
