If memory serves, the immensity of that Great Unclean One in the river was further compounded by how it was described speaking. It couldn't be understood cause it spoke so slow and at such a low register. That's what really sealed it for me.

My favourite are the Rotflys which are Beasts of Nurgle that face one too many rejections by those they want to play with. They pupate in cocoons of their own bitterness and emerge ready to spore those who rejected them.

I can’t confirm but I’m pretty sure Nurgle was inspired by the Assyrian god Nergal who was the diety of death and disease. Unlike AoS artist depictions of Nergal wasn’t a hulking rotting monstrosity.

I still think the bilepiper is the most interesting nurgle demon. The whole concept is mad. And now that the sylvaneth have their own piper, we can have a battle of the bands for the realm of life.

Plaguebearers are a really weird subversion of most minor Daemons. They fully retain a functioning mind akin to a mortal, as is their function and origin, being corrupted but whole mortal souls, whereas Bloodletters are made from scratch, and at their core don't have a human essence. The thing is, that mind doesn't exert agency that runs against Nurgle, despite its mortal origin, because Plaguebearers are hopeless corrupted souls, so they by definition can't go against hopelessness and despair, and therefore appear to lack personality and individualism, seeming to be "mindless zombies" in effect, while having a tumult of actual mental reasoning going on in their minds. That's why Plaguebearers are so diverse in their forms of herald, because when personality elements are present, it's due to the indomitable resilience of that aspect of the personality surviving into daemonhood, setting you out as a particularly quality Plaguebearer, most likely to get a promotion for standing out in some way.
