2UZ-FE Engine Rebuild 4.7L V8 Toyota Lexus

Rebuilding a blow 2UZ-FE engine out of a 2002 Toyota Tundra Access Cab. Engine was hydro-locked from Hurricane Mathew and destroyed one of the rods. @@markg1495 Turbos for these are not easy mainly because its hard to find a tune for the ECU. I know a guy with a rear mount turbo on a tundra. He owns a shop called dirtydeedindustries, if you have turbo questions Id talk to him.

I have 478K on my 2005 4Runner V8 2UZFE engine. Timing belt every 90K although I get lazy sometimes I replace them by 130K. Oil change every 5K mobil 1. Tried using 0W 30 fully synthetic oil and engine runs smoother and quieter on morning start ups and the usual engine tick when cold is gone. Had to replace secondary air intake fan by 300K. Finally replaced serpentine tensionernd idler pulley. Its been way overdue wife heard the chirping when engine is cold almost 5 years ago because of these pulleys. This engine lasted 13 winters already and probably more.

@@telecasterman18 Keep it! But I did have frame rust problems but Toyota did a recall on my year Tundra and they replaced the frame for free so its got a brand new shiny one under there now.

John B The first year of any new car especially with a new powertrain usually warrants a few lemons. I would say 2009 and up, but the motors are pretty good, so any year you want. Any year tundra you get will be a horse. Wont let you down if you take care of it.

Looks great man!! Did the timing belt on the family 04 sequoia at about 200k. I was worried to see the condition of the belt but was pleasantly surprised to see the belt in great shape! I was very tempted to put everything back together but figured since I was already more than half way into it to just go ahead and finish the job.

I have put 200k of HARD driving on mine (at 310k now) . Bouncing off the limiter, Saskatchewan style -40 cold starts, towing WAY over capacity, late oil changes, ext.. I can't think of any other motor that would compare to this! BEST ENGINE EVER!! No I'm not trying to kill it.. I just do what I gotta do and this thing takes it on the chin:)

Probably cost more to do than the car is worth (if you were paying a garage), but the satisfaction you get from rebuilding a badly damaged engine like this yourself is priceless. Have the same engine in my Sequoia, they are bulletproof (obviously not waterproof). Great job. Is it still running OK now?

My 04 has almost 300k. That's towing every week, hauling and doing contractor work for the last 19 years. It runs like the day I bought it. Just change the oil every 5k and timing belt every 120k. Amsoil 25k and transmission fluid. I'm doing some pre-rebuild research here. thanks for posting. I'm definitely not buying a 100k dollar truck when the day comes.

Yeah they were, they have held up pretty well also for only 100$. If you want some extra power dirtydeedsindustries makes a new set of upgraded injectors which helps mix the fuel better and really helps these trucks! He also makes an awesome exhaust kit but its like 3,000$...

Yeah for sure, ask away! The brand name was Manzo, they were like 120$ so super cheap compared to those JBA's. I didn't notice any power loss from mine but I just had my truck re-geared to 4:56 gears (like 2k miles before it died) which helps a lot. Do you have the 12 hole injectors that dirty deeds sells? I have heard good things about those.

Hey brother, Id say if its not broke dont fix it. Those engines go forever and mine had 200K on it and looked amazing other than the blown connecting rod. The factory does it better than anyone with their tolerances and such. If you need to tear into it, id say just jump right in. Maybe watch this video a few times, if you have any extra questions Id me more than happy to help out with them. Just have confidence, you can do my friend!

I haven’t looked too deeply into the price of a rebuilt 2uzfe but I’m guessing it would be similar to what I have + 2 manifolds and a T-belt/WP/pulley job... what’s your input on this since this is something you guys have kind of delt with it in a way. @@telecasterman18 Hey Dusty, what I can tell you is that we found that it was more cost effective to save what we could and rebuild components instead of buying new. I believe the price of a 2UZ right now is around 5,000$.. but I am not 100% on this. I would say its cheaper to just re-do the stuff you need..

Hey! No problem at all. Usually we just look on google for a full manual. They are normally a few hundred pages so we use a laser printer and just select the stuff we need. Finding what you need without a glossary is difficult! Hope this helped

It's the engine ground wire connected to the passenger side of the firewall. Connect it somewhere else.. ticking gone I promise.. spread the word

190,000 miles at the time of the failure (no boost just water in the intake) right now its sitting at about 200,000 miles and its performing great! Parts were about 1500-2500$ with fluids and the sensors and all that. Ill keep a much better detailed list on the next build. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks man! It's a rough exhaust set up to be honest lol. The headers in the video, factory mid-pipe, and then a flowmaster(got it or free) further back with the final pipe going strait down about 3 inches after the flowmaster. She's loud but works for the time being. My original factory exhaust fell off due to rust going down a dirt road haha. Thanks for watching!

Just about 199k on the engine before it died, Toyota took the cover off my intake when I got it serviced and I went through a puddle and it blew the rod. Thats when I decided Ill just do it all myself.

Hey brother, Im not super familiar with that engine but you can definitely rebuild it and throw in some bigger pistons and heads. A turbo charger would probably be your cheapest option for boost. Theres also the LS swap route, really just depends on what you have access to and how much $$ you want to throw at it. Let me know if I can help at all my friend

The reason the connecting rods on the Tundra 2UZ-FE motors breaks is because they are cast. Same thing with the Sequoias. Both of those motors were assembled stateside. The 2UZ-FE motors that were made in Japan, the ones that went into the GX470, the land Cruiser and the 4Runners had drop forged connecting rods. Those things don't break easy, even under boost. This is the reason Toyota stopped selling TRD supercharger kits for the older tundras, because it would blow the rods.

Ahhhh I did not know that, very interesting. I've heard of people using 1UZ rods in place of the 2UZ ones because they are much beefier.

@@EverydayOutdoor yeah, there's about 20% more material in the old 1UZ rods than in the 2UZ and 3UZ. But that extra mass is less than ideal unless you really need it. The 2UZ rods are also a slightly different alloy than the super beefy 1uz rods. The thick ones were made in the late 80's to early 90's, and the forged 2uz ones started around 99, I believe. But if you're running boost, those 1UZ rods are pretty solid. If you're gonna run a lot of boost though, get some LEXTREMES.

The 2uz-fe is an awesome motor but 2 weaknesses. 1 the timing belt change.... its definitely a challenge doing it yourself but will save $1200 if the dealer does it. And the second weakness is the piston rods... they are weak so don't tune or try to raise the rev limiter in those trucks it's set to 5000 redline and I'm pretty sure 5500 in the 05 t0 06 model tundras with the 5spd autos. Other than that u got a 500k + engine. Very reliable

I agree 100%, we should have probably upgraded the rods while we were in there but I dont have any plans for boosting this particular engine so I dont feel too bad about it. As far as the timing belt goes you're correct, its a pain but it hurts paying the dealer that much $$

my 2001 with 481,000 miles has 500 wheel horsepower I have a tuner, a little bigger cam and a intake manifold and it holds up great

I've never done major work to my cars before - but I do have patience, time and the desire to learn. I'm also planning on keeping my new to me 03 LX 470 for a long time to come, so I'd like to learn and do as much as possible. Should I still give it a shot? It's got about 150k miles (240k KMs) and I'm not sure if the timing belt has ever been changed. There's no sticker for it anywhere, and when I spoke to Lexus, they wouldn't release the service history to me, but they did say there's no record of the timing belt ever being replaced.

@@docmadhattan I would definitely replace it, much cheaper than a new engine. If you think you can do it yourself then go for it, if you dont think so just have a dealer do it. I love the 470's though, really cool rigs.
