Just one question, as I suffer from anxiety disorder, I couldn't help but envy whenever you make these videos/vlogs but instead of being indoors, you choose to actually walk-and-talk with hundreds of people just looking at you as you point that camera to your face and simply vlog. Heck I can barely take a selfie out in the public, before quitting in well under 5 sec before people start staring. I hope you could reply and possibly help me get over my own irrational fears and shyness. (Anxiety and Depression both are fucking up my life since almost 2 years now)

But basically, it comes down to get professional help - someone to guide and support you while you are on your journey.

I feel like this very accurately describes why I have such a distaste for the political system in the US. People seem to get stuck in a single political party and allow the party to define all of their opinions rather then define their political party with their opinions.

I would suggest the reason that this is the case is because we only have a two party duopoly in the US. Third parties find it very difficult to compete nationally, are blocked by ballot access laws, have perpetual a lack of funding, struggle with the electoral college on the presidential level, aren't well known, can't get into debates, have to deal with a FPTP system that punishes competition, etc. As much as I'd like to allow my opinions to define my political party, that'd probably put me in the US Green Party, which is unable to compete without at least federal funding, which it can't get unless it gets 5% in the general election (on the presidential level), which it likely will be unable to get given the current set of barriers to entry into politics. Change--brought about from within the broken system and from the outside--is required. Popular participation in local politics is necessary as well.

Well, to me this is more of a moral issue. Do we want to support companies and organizations that use dubious means to make profit? Sometimes, we don't have a choice. Pretty much all banks, for example, have adopted a series of highly dubious methods. But, it would be extremely hard to live without a bank account in this day and age. I mean, google is not a saint either but still here I am on youtube on a daily basis. I think we should hedgehogs whenever we can be. The fox approach of being a cunning and sneaky individual who's main motive is to get as many personal benefits as possible, is in the end what makes this world into such an awful place. If you look at history, and all the great achievments we have accomplished none of them has been the result of diplomacy and cunning behavior. No, it's always about that things need to change and we won't stop until we've accomplished our goals. If all people were foxes we would still have slavery and women would not be able to vote. These are zero sum games. Either we have slaves or we do not have slaves. Either women can vote or they can't. There is not room for subtlety here. Diplomacy is NEVER about change. Diplomacy is about maintenance. Yes, we need maintenance as well... but, without a hedgehog in the background nothing will actually change. In other words, the hedgehog is what drives us towards change and progress. The fox is the one making the transition smooth (and in some cases possible). The fox alone though, can't accomplish anything. What I'm trying to say, is that we probably need both. But, the hedgehog is the true source of progress.

I loved the unreliable narrator at the end, but then again that's coming from someone who's engaged more with literature and art than rigorous science. If you look at the statement purely logically, then you might come to different conclusions about it. Which begs me to question- are you sure that you're driven by the motivation that delving into the heart of truth is what's driving you to make these videos. Because if that was the only drive at play, then you'd be a research scientist publishing papers or/and performing experiments. But you decided to combine your love of making videos and doing science into creating Veritasium, and then your love of sharing through the journal-istic approach led you to create this second channel. So if the primary drive was to dig into truth, we'd never get your channels. I don't think you began as a hedgehog at all, but were always a fox- and that's turning out great, especially for viewers like me, who get to re-visit physics fundamentals from a fresh perspective and also get to think about other aspects of life through your strolls. Keep at it, fox!
@David_Fellner4 жыл бұрын
Not nearly as many people read research papers than watch youtube videos. I know about know his real motives, but I would guess that he sees this as a way to reach more people with information that professional scientists already know but most other people don't.

Took me awhile to figure out the location, it seemed vaguely familiar at first and by about 2/3 of the way through, I thought it's got to be New Orleans, an appropriate setting for such a presentation. Nice job. We are all faced with navigating between certainty and doubt. Certainty has its benefits--kinda like a habit--doubt on the other hand leaves us open to the potential for change. The notion of "change" itself however maybe an illusion..

Be a Hedgefox. Lots of people are happy in their ignorance, realizing that the discomfort of not knowing reality is better than losing the comfort of their convenient illusion. I'm thinking a lot of my less-than-successful students are not all entirely stupid or uncreative - because they have been very insightful about different things at different times. Most of them simply do not see any value in learning algebra, that they feel oppressed by somebody else's externally applied value system; another sizable chunk simply only work well when kept under constant and close supervision - trapped in a corner like a rat where any deviation from the workload is met with swift and stern punishment - and their practice performance drops to zero as soon as I turn to aid another student. Some are truly, deeply stupid, but they are rare and they tend to want to learn so they work hard and have some small success. I also think a lot of my kids don't like math because it immediately tells them when they are wrong, and then there is no way to B.S. their way out of it. So the kids who struggle, either because they can't or because they do not want to, are unable to process many different views and ideas. The only things that really matter are the things they can do (are able and have liberty to do so) and the things they will do (whether or not others demand it or make it illegal).

Whether to be a hedgehog or a fox is an interesting idea, and I, too, read Isaiah Berlin's piece on Tolstoy. Years ago, at the recommendation of my English/Creative Writing professor. Fascinating stuff, that. You've mentioned, Derek, that it might be impossible to separate the hedgehog from the fox [6:55 or so]. This observation relates to a phenomenon I've noticed grow over the past decade: the problem of criticism. I've noticed to be criticized of our opinions could, in fact, correlate to a criticism of ourselves. If, for example, you and I are talking politics-a faux pas in "polite" society, it seems-and we're discussing two different candidates for a position (President/Prime Minister, Congressman/Parliamentarian, etc. etc.), what leads to some bitter conflict is our perception of comments as being injurious towards *us* and *not* towards our belief systems. We have embedded those values and ideas into our core; this inability to separate the two makes us appear more erinaceous, unwilling to compromise our own beliefs for our own selves. Comments on Internet posts (this video, Facebook, reddit, Twitter, etc. etc.) only further this idea, as people can engage not in debate about the issues or the ideas presented in an argument but instead pursue more ad hominem attacks on someone's character. We used to carry opinions around like a box, switching out the less favorable ones for more favorable ones-and perhaps back again after some time. To save the hassle, however, we've removed the box and instead tattooed those opinions on us. And *that* removal is much more difficult-and much more time-consuming. Food for thought.

"There are only 2 types of people in the world: Those who think there are only 2 types of people and those that don't." This is similar to a quote by American humorist, Robert Benchley (1889 - 1945) "There may be said to be two classes of people in the world; those who constantly divide the people of the world into two classes, and those who do not. Both classes are extremely unpleasant to meet socially, leaving practically no one in the world whom one cares very much to know." Vanity Fair (February 1920) Other variations: "There are only 10 kinds of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don’t." BTW Derek. Who was that girl coming from behind you? She looked familiar like I have seen before on a KZbin channel.

Looks like you're in my neck of woods! Ya'll really should try the mimosa's here. They go great with those early French Quarter walks and Sunday brunches. Gotta say though... you're pretty smart visiting a week or 2 before Mardi Gras.... unless you plan to stay thru Fat Tuesday. In that case, you're pretty insane/brave. One more thing..., New Orleans mornings and red, puffy, "hungover" eyes seem to always go hand in hand :-)

Can't quite figure out why 'fox' and 'hedgehog' link to 'diverse' and 'insulated'... Interesting nonetheless.

Thanks Derek! I think your spot on about the whole Facebook -vs- Google thing in terms of the monetization models. A little critique for you though... You seemed to be "rambling" just a bit. It just may be my A-D-D. Who knows. Thanks for letting me see what New Orleans is looking like and enjoy your time there. ✌️

I run into this quandary a lot with discussions about gender identity and sexuality. When someone is accused of being homophobic or transphobic, it's because they're "considering multiple perspectives" and "oh, there's a lot more gray area than you're considering." But if I'm accused of something, I'm just another queer kid. "Where's your source, tumblr?" "People like you shouldn't be this pushy if you want acceptance." Sometimes people insist that they're foxes even as they stab you with their quills.

Really happy to see NOLA in the background. I had the privilege of going there in November last year for a RHYTACC conference and I fell in love with that place. Absolutely amazing!

I think that the hedgehog approach requires immense confidence in the strenght of the tactic/ideology/goal you adopt. If you believe your point of view is strong enough you can hedehog it, but most of the times it's not. For example, we admire great civil rights activists (MLK, Gandhi etc.) because they were unwilling to compromise, and they risked absolutely everything accepting only the most ambitious result as sufficient. On the other hand, if a politician doesn't have enough support it can be disastrous if he's too much hedgehog-like. For exemple, here in Italy we're now voting a same-sex marriage law that is undeniably imperfect and not quite as egualitarian as it could be, but if it didn't pass, gay marriage would remain impossible for God knows how long. In this case, being fox-like can change things for the better, while a hedgehog approach might be a complete failure. This is a very stimulating way of thinking about problems, thank you Derek

Wow.. This was your most beautiful video. And I particularly don't mind your shaky walking videos. Cause I get to see beautiful places and architecture through your lens. And one more thing that music at the end that got perfectly timed..isn't it?? 😉

I get a different picture from Berlin's essay. I see the notions as dual but not exclusive, like divisions in logic, inductive and deductive, or universal and existential. It's Hedgehogs that seek integration--in fact, Hedgehogs categorically reject what they cannot integrate. The Hedgehog is in danger of becoming too narrowly focused, specialized, or conversely, too diffuse, insubstantial, or obversely, overburdened and overstrained with the many ideas they've been unable to integrate very well. The nature of the Fox is to have non-integrated, context-sensitive domains. The Fox's mind is well compartmentalized, and will avoid integrative efforts indefinitely, if possible. This provides the Fox with a reserved, non-judgemental nature, equanimity with the unexpected,, and comfort with diversity. The danger is that the Fox can become hypocritical, schizophrenic, inconsistent, and unreliable. You can see how, when a Hedgehog fails to integrate, it becomes Fox-like, and when a Fox is confronted with it's disparate actions or words, the Fox will have to become Hedgehog-like and either integrate it's different lives or suffer them to be integrated by others.

I hate it when people apply obscure and convoluted metaphors, analogies and even allegories to rational ideas. Like how journalists use literary tools like hyperbole. They're particularly fond of using metaphors around social commentary. Journalism is a science. Imagine using hyperbole around mathematics! Oh well, I just meant... statistics. I don't like this video. It uses too much irrationality, allusion and too many metaphors. Analogies should be used to clarify - not obfuscate. Language should not be used to deliberately detract from the actuality! What was he even saying? I can't be a fox! I'm a human! I don't understand! Does he even understand that metaphors and analogies are technically lies?

You probably won't like this comment, but here goes: The fox - An opportunistic person which will rationalize their actions to remove cognitive dissonance, since (s)he is doing something against his or her beliefs. But the benefit is tempting, so they give in and then try to rationalize. Your example with facebook is this. The hedgehog - A person who is not close-minded, but has a defined set of values to which (s)he adhers to. Any potential benefit is not taken into account to either approve or discredit something. They look at the world in general terms to determine what is right by asking the question "would I consider it to be hypocritical/opportunistic if [a person who reaaaallly annoys me] would do the same exact thing?". One should have stable criteria - same for oneself, for friends and family and complete randoms. We haven't evolved to think like this so it involves more effort, but it is more "rational". Ideas over circumstance.

The guy "What's going on?" Veritasium: "KZbin, *points at camera* KZbin! :D" they probably were hoping for him to have an advert of how to get such a sexy beard, like Veritasiums.
