I have the same model, of the same color. This is a KMZ Dnepr MT10 from the mid 70s. Beware of the chinese carb parts: they are often of random dimension, which is not the best for carb setting. For the squeaky noise, this is possibly the carter breather sleeve pin. It is worn, too short and does not move the sleeve. The carter overpressure explains the engine oil leak everywhere. Beware also the oil level and quantity. The conrod main bearings are journal bearings. If the engine loses the oil, the remaining oil overheats and the conrod bearings fail. Use 20w-50 mineral based oil. Also, have time to clean the centrifuge oil filter and the oil ducts inside the crankpins. If the engine works on one cylinder, it is often an ignition short circuit. The mechanical ignition is a disaster. Use ukrainian electronic ignition instead, it is cheap and plug and play.

2V, those Urals were known for poor quality pistons and rings. The Brits used to lightly rebore the cylinders for roundness and refit British made Ps and rings. They ran much better and lasted longer while holding higher compression unavailable with the stock setup.

I use Ukrainian pistons. They are cheap and good. Polish Almot pistons are more expensive and better. For piston rings, either buy Ukrainian rings or Hungarian Belcord ringset. A German webshop's chinese "special rings" lasted 1000 km in my machine. Note that I made 7k kms (4k+miles) with Ukrainian Pistons and Belcord ring set. I drive at 90-110km/h (56-68mph) regularly for 180-200 mile trips in one day. So,the original pistons are not so bad.

Re your comment that bth carbs had the same settings (JETS) tou were barely above 1/4 throttle on your ride so the carbs would be operating mainly on the idle circuit so the mains wouldnt be pulling any fuel. Carb ballance would be thr thing to look at, there are gauges for checking the vacuum but a pipe held to the ear works as an old school tuning method. Great video and bike btw

A valve lash adjustment check. And a carb sink after that will make it much smoother running if you care to go further. If your base gasket and head gaskets don't appear to be leaking much , torquing heads can be very sketchy and a good chance of pulling a stud out of the case . Very cool to see it run again well done

In 1972, my high school mates and I discussed buying the M Series 650 for a princely sum of $650AU still in the crate. We all greed not to. They were notoriously slow and fuel guzzling bad handlers. I had a Jawa 250 at the time and upgraded to a Ducati 250. One mate bought a Ducati 250 Desmo, Another bought an Ariel 650 and the last one bought a Triumph engine/BSA gearbox and clutch/Norton Featherbed frame with Road-holder Forks Scrambler Special.

I paid $500 AU for mine, from Capitol Motors in Sydney. Fitted a new pair of Honda 360 carbs; what an improvement. Had it for years, solo and chair. Loved it until l bought a new Goldwing in 1959. Now, that was a motorcycle !!

I had one of these bikes - a solo version, over 20 years ago. My one had the square rocker (valve) covers other bikes made in the other factory has round rocker covers. It had Lucas Rita electronic ignition which was a common mod in those days. Even so, still fussy to start up. It was fun while I had it, but as a mechanic, I found the engineering very crude. Did you know that all the wheels are interchangeable including the sidecar wheel?

Your patience, experience and logical thinking are impressive. Very satisfying video for me. I was born in 1949 in communist Poland and seen such Soviet motorcycles used by military and police. Commoner could not buy them because they were not on the market. Some people bought used ones from police and struggle to fix them for years because parts were not available. At that time you could not by a piece of wood board or a brick. Everything was in short supply. I wish one day you will show us this motorcycle restored to showroom condition. Good luck good mechanic.

Hi Joe. I have the predecessor of your Ukranian, MT10 Dneipr. Mine is therefore a 1973 vintage, 6-volt version of this same 650cc machine. I have invested a little time and money into my one with new rings and cylinders and a pair of later-type piston carburettors and an electronic ignition system. It's a lovely machine to ride and a first-time starter, so I use it a great deal. I really do hope you can create some more of your excellent videos around your Dneipr and develop it into your daily rider with little Vinnie hopping into the sidecar and coming along for the ride. Love your videos and Channel. Please keep it coming 👌👍

Love your work Joe. Top tip, from someone who rebuilt 1000 carburettors, always make sure all flat surfaces are flat. Most carbies will be distorted from people overtightning and they will leak air. Can't believe you are riding around town on an old Russian bike!!! Keep up the excellent work.!

Basically you can steer with the throttle. Accelerating the bike will tend to go around the sidecar, decelerating the opposite, the sidecar tends to go around the bike. Slight lean in sidecar to bike and toe in with the sidecar wheel angled slightly to the bike may help straight ahead steering without the wobble. Assuming most things are tight etc. Steering towards the sidecar may cause the sidecar wheel to lift.

I had a 650 Gold Flash with a big Watsonian sidecar. Four adults and a baby no problem. It was fifteen bob a year insurance and without the sidecar it was sixteen quid, and could do a hundred miles an hour easy with the sidecar sprocket. The left and right turns are very different and definitely need a bit of practice. But about the best fun you can have.

The countryside is reminiscent of the Kentucky 'Blue Grass' landscape. I don't know about engines, but from the beeping sound of this Russian machine, I can conclude that the exhaust valve is blowing out. I wouldn't have spared the time to grind and adjust the valves correctly. I would also have replaced the piston rings. If I decided to take the block apart (I didn't), I would have replaced the shimrings and, if necessary, the crankshaft bearings as well. Anyway, there is still a lot of work left on this machine. You had the honor of being able to clean the original communist dirt from the sidecar... Greetings from Hungary!

the URAL is based on BMW blueprints. my '56 R50 fires both cylinders on every stroke. intake and exhaust get a spark simultaneously.

The M-72 was based on R71 blueprints and samples. The Ural name was not used until 1961 with the M-62.

What a machine! I loved Vinniecam… he quickly became chilled out - ‘I go where my Dad goes’. At some point you’ve got to do a left turn Joe… I think you’ll need Vinnie plus a couple of dead motors as ballast, or Vinnie plus your wife - they’ll love it! Also, I should imagine this bike plus sidecar wouldn’t be expected to do much more than 50mph…. but keep giving her TLC and she’ll respond I’m sure! Cheers!

they will be over 70 mph.... but i dont recommend high speed until he is used to the sidecars handling,

Vinnie was smart enough to keep his center of gravity as low as possible once you began riding off-road. Poor little bugger was just a bit nervous, can't blame him.

As others have pointed out, squeaky head gasket, retorque to 34Nm-ish. And then drive it in the snow, lots of fun.

Oh and here's the startup ritual: Ignition off, fuel on, trickle carbs, three kicks, ignition on and off you go. Soviet anti-theft technology at its finest!

Get yourself a hand crank boat winch and mount it to the trailer. Could make your life a little easier. Love the videos.
