This week I am looking at a trio of cars in the same category, but sharing little else. We have three examples of long wheelbase luxury saloon - represented by a 1999 Mercedes S-Class, a 2007 BMW 760LI and a new Audi A8L.
#Audi #Mercedes #BMW

I love your Mercedes S-Class. My dad has had an 01 S500 for a very long time and it's always been an amazingly well built car. The interior is still in great shape despite all the miles and it has been a surprisingly robust vehicle. One of the smoothest driving cars I have ever driven.

My answer is that none of them really are any more reliable nowadays than the other, the only difference is what will go wrong and how much will it cost to fix and run any given car. Jay, I loved this video. Very cool to see these cars reviewed back to back. I have a 2006 W220 in S55 format (decently rare only 286 were built that year) and it fixes many of the problems you had with this pre face lift S500. Blinds all around in the rear that go up or down with the push of a button, much better infotainment (although still terrible by todays standards), and also less plastic on the interior. Mine is majority wood, suede and leather. I've been in a same year S500 and I was blown away by how much different my car is to the standard S500. Interestingly, for a car that's notorious for being unreliable, this 2 owner (Me being the second), 144,000 mile AMG has been an absolute dream for the 3 years I've owned it. Smooth powerful engine, great handling and road holding, and unbelievable quiet and comfortable. I've done some preventative maintenance on the gearbox and suspension as that ABC system can be finicky and expensive. I personally adore the look of this body style. The swooping nose and hood is understated and elegant, the car feels like it was molded out of a single block of aluminum. Just totally solid. I have no reason to buy any other LWB luxury car! I still have the original window sticker at $138,500 CAD. Depreciation is a beautiful thing if you're on the right end of it!

I have owned: an W140 S420, 2x W220 S500, 1x V220 S600, 1x C215 CL600 and an 1x V221mopf S500 BE 4m. Although the W140 has its reputation as the most bulletproof S-Class, i must confess that i had the most problems with it. The V/W221 is a great car, but it must be the mopf (Modelpflaege - Daimler German for facelift) version, becuase the 1.generation had quite a few electronic problems and it must be the BE (blue efficiency) 500 engine (not 387 hp 5.5, but 435 hp 4.7 biturno). Now the prices in Germany starting at 16-17.000 EUR till 30.000 EUR, so for 25.000 EUR you get a really good car for its money. But if we talk design only, the 220 for me is still the absolute winner - Brunno Sacco made such a beautiful car (also the C215, his last car), that for my opinion the 220 is still a stunner. BUT: it must be in mint condtion and fully loaded. In Germany you can get an S600 V220 mopf for 7-12 tausend EUR. For that kind of money, you get an 5.5 V12 Bi-Turbo engine with 500 hp, 800 Nm and 4.6s 0-100 kmh. In an 18 year old saloon. If you get (and the 600 has it as standard) the 'leather exclusive' package, then also the interior looks more fancy, because there's leather and alcantara everywhere. The facelift 220 also has (beside ventilated, heated, memory and massage) dynamic front seats, bi-xenon lamps, PRE-SAFE system etc. So if you give additional 500 EUR for an new Toucscreen, where you also get AppleCarplay, Navi and so on, the car isnt outdated anymore. Beside the autonomhus driving, the all new S-Class (222) has actually nothing more to offer. The Bangle 7-series is still a cool car, but it had quite more problems then the S-Class...you can see quite some W220 with 600,700.000 km...i didnt saw an 7-series with that millage and the same for the A8.

I picked up a S430, the bargain S class, a 2001, for $1440 CDN. It has a few cosmetic faults, but at 19 years old I can forgive them. Mechanically it's top class, it drives like new, and it's not that far behind an S500 in performance. The silicon crystal coated interior of the cylinders ensures that it idles as smooth as when it was new. I'm not fond of that generation 7 series, the previous model had much better handling - it drove like a sports sedan. The 2002 on drives like it has gout. As for the Audi, I'd prefer a Passat.

I like the comparison format just fine. The BMW was actually designed by Van Heuydonk (almost certainly misspelled) while Bangle was design chief. VH became chief when Bangle left BMW. I believe Bangle actually did design the beautiful Z8 roadster. The story on the e65/e66 was that three designs were presented to BMW's board, and the board selected the most radical of the three. And it WAS radical! I loved, I mean really loved, the preceding e38 7-series, but I equally detested the e65. BMW had been criticized for its conservative styling and, IMO, they dramatically over-reacted. Since the introduction of the e65, my interest in BMW has steadily waned for a combination of reasons. 1970 ~ 2000 was the golden era of BMW, for me. But I have gotten old, and I still drive cars from the 20th century. Sorry to criticize your new toy. I have never driven one, but I'm sure it's very impressive. The e38 certainly was a brilliant car.

All of the electronics work and the air suspension was done a few years back. If anything that is the luxury car to buy. It might average around $1k per year for maintenance but the fact it costs a tenth of it's original cost makes it a bargain.

I really like the Fiat, the 5 Series and the Z4, but I think this 7 Series is butt-whippin' ugly (and the 6 is hideous). Great car to sit inside for the money, though (especially as you can't see it). Having said all that, it's not the best looking S Class ever either (and might well be the worst), and that Audi is das uber bland. The 7 Series before this one was gorgeous, but, as James points out, later 7 Series models have got worse and worse. Look at the state of the latest one - that grille on the front is frankly embarrassing.

Top tip: Stay away from the W220 S class if you can't afford expensive fixes, the later W221 generation was much better, never really heard much good things about this 7 series generation, i don't like looks, but that is my taste. Probably the best option in this era of luxury cars is the Audi A8 D3, bulletproof gearbox, reliable engines nice quality interior that doesn't look to dated and many cool engine options from the V8 diesels to W12 monsters and a Lamborghini derived V10. For me that would be the car i choose.

Currently have the A8 - does look boring and not a real statement car. But it flows down the road like no other, tech is deep and the car is full of thoughtful cosseting touches. Best car I have owned in terms of pure cosseting luxury.

Great video James, love this format. For me the fact it's quite a basic Merc and still sets the benchmark for everyone speaks volumes. Impressed with the interior comfort of the BM for its age and price but the Audi is a joke for 93k. If you buy the L version there just shouldn't be that many options to further spec it up. Customise it yes but more should come as standard. For me my money would go on a new S/CL Class and definitely AMG if came in budget. Like you say the CL55 of the time were just awesome.

Really appreciated this video. Reminded me of old Top Gear when the started again after the revamp. Looking forward to Part 2 on driving dynamics. Though admittedly, it would have been better if you could get your hands on an F01 7 series. It would have shown a bigger difference in how they approached the technology aspect in the new generation, rather than comparing an early cycle vehicle to a late cycle vehicle of the same (comparable) generation.

The A8 is a very good way of hiding that you've spent £90K. I can't abide touch controls for things you'll use often. It means you take your eyes off the road for far too long, with a button you can just feel what your doing.

I've been driven (to the airport) in the W221 and W222 S Class, that generation and the later (5th gen) BMW 7 series and the current and previous generation A8. If I was in the position of buying one it would be the Audi any day. I'm a weirdo that likes sitting in the front, although I must admit the back of the A8L is rather nice! I really enjoy the button for making the passenger seat move forwards.

Fantastic review , your knowledge is amazing. From the outside the Merc & BMW have aged remarkably well , hard to believe there is 20 years between the oldest car & the A8. If only the maintenance costs weren't so high these would be the best value for money used cars on the road. For me , i would never consider the A8 , it looks far too much like every other cheaper Audi & is not special enough or has the brand cachet to justify the 90k price , i'm also bored of the same old design that has changed little over the last 20 years. Really like the Bangle era , the cars really stood out & were interesting to look at unlike the generic & predictable style of BMW's these days !.

Here's the thing James. How many old Mercedes do you see still going alongside old Volvos compared to old beemers and certainly Audis? And there lies the answer to which you should buy if you want a long termer with quality

Great content but I think you missed a trick by not including an XJL. One at about 10, 20 or 30 grand would have been a great alternative. But keep doing what you are doing. And a great ad for the Merc.

I agree, the A8 is missing the fanfare. By going to a global interior layout across the entire model range (some models are lagging behind, but they'll get there), the A8 has been dragged along into a territory that a 90k sedan ought not to occupy. If you look at Lexus, by comparison, the interior designs of the LC and LS500 are totally unique compared to everything else in the lineup. Lexus hasn't lost sight of what it means to be a "flagship". That said, I think the S8 can get away with it, since it's really a missile first and a luxury car second.

Loved the Audi A8 D3 especialy in phase 3 4.2TDI form. Strangely enough it was the sportiest of the luxo-barge category. Mine even the €6.5k optional are "real" B&O system (before B&O were bought out and licensed xheap ass car hifi). The ASF all aluminium construction made real special IMO. Audi really dropped the ball and have gone on the cheap since then. The post D3 /2011+ gen kept the very expensive ASF but got uglyvand awfully bling. The gen after that on which this model is based is just cheap ass with "perceived" quality. Drove the previous gen 728i for ages too which was fabulous. Very elegant and classy, a great drive too. Need the next gen S Class I think.

The best car to choose is probably not on the list, 10k would get a very respectful LS460 and it won't go tits up after 500 miles.. or 50k miles even - plus you get a smooth as silk V8 thrown in for good measure

I thought that Bangle was a bit hit/miss on designs. I'm not so keen on the 7 Series you have here - the boot especially looks like some weird draped-over appendage. But I did love the styling of the Z4 (not by Bangle, but under his time as chief of the design dept). However, the BMW here hits the spot for me as a luxo-barge: Plenty of tech and lots of luxurious stuff, not least the amount of space on offer.

The w220 was produced from I think 1998 and the pre facelift e65 from 2002. This is a facelift one which is waaay prettier ,it started from 2005 od 2006 - and so did the w221 s class.

Cool video but you should really compare 760 to S8 or 730d to the one you had. There’s considerable difference in “feeling special” between top of range and bottom of range. You would likely say latest 7 series doesn’t feel that special in basic trim. I’m always shocked how little has changed in last 20 years - manufacturers are cruising on idle for a bit too long!

Been waiting so long for the merc vs BMW video from you, looking forward to the rest. I've always had a soft spot for that model s-class and much prefer the styling of this over later models. I always considered the A8 the subtle option back in the day, but the 760 has the V12, and that interior is v nice.
