It seems superchargers have been getting a lot of attention lately with their successes in various sanctioning bodies from the Radial ranks to Pro Modified in the NHRA professional drag racing series. However, there will always be a lure to the twin turbocharged universe and for good reason-these combinations make huge power and are very reliable. Case in point is Sony Briggs’ latest small-tire monster, a twin turbocharged HEMI that cranked out 3,066 WHP on the famed Mainline Hub Dyno at FuelTech USA’s headquarters in Ball Ground, Georgia.
All FuelTech customers can schedule time on the dyno to sort through their combinations and identify issues and problems before hitting the drag strip. For Biggs, this wasn’t his first rodeo with a big power combination but he still chose to get his flawless Fox Mustang bolted to the hub dyno. The team worked their way up to the magical 3,000 WHP barrier, ensuring all systems operate properly. It saves time, money and wear and tear on the vehicle to have the bugs worked out before getting on track.
Biggs turned to an FT600 engine management system because of the popular features that come standard in the unit. The PowerFT family of ECUs-FT450, FT550, FT550 LITE, and FT600-are all-inclusive systems that offer sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data logger, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, Gyroscope, Accelerometer and so much more.
One advantage of having the ECU handle all those systems is the ability to cross-reference the data with FTManager software on a single computer screen, helping the tuner make educated-decisions in an organized and efficient manner. Additionally, the FT600, FT550, and FT450 have a customizable digital display for the driver and the anti-glare TFT touchscreen offers the ability to make adjustments without hooking up a PC computer. It offers driver feedback in real-time as well as other neat features, like a practice tree built into the unit to help drivers get in the zone.
One unique feature in this Mustang is the Liberty five-speed transmission that is mated to a torque converter. The FT600, FT550, and FT550 LITE come standard with the GearController system that allows the user to control transmission functions. Biggs is running his Mustang in eighth-mile competitions and it will make shifting precise and accurate each time as the car will traverse the 660-foot distance in less that 4-seconds.
This racecar uses the original Peak and Hold boxes, which FuelTech recently updated with the Peak and Hold PRO Injector Driver. FuelTech offers three levels of Peak and Hold drivers to keep up with today’s low impedance fuel injectors, powering as little as four of them and going all the way up to sixteen fuel injectors.
