3 1/2" & 5" Raised Track Construction of Sale Area Model Engineering Society Railway - Live Steam

Although Sale Area M E S was founded in 1972 final council approval to build the railway was not granted until late May 1975 and the first section of track was laid on 1st June 1975. The Parks department had given full support to the project and we had been permitted to pre fabricate the track structure inside the large building shown on the slides. The founder and early members worked on fabrication of the track panels to drawing dimensions marked onto the floor of the building. We had also ran portable track events almost every weekend to raise funds. Once started, the track was erected very quickly and to the surprise of some, the ends joined seamlessly !!! I am extremely proud of what we all achieved and how members supported the build every week end for years, particularly given the very long time it takes for councils to approve a project they actually supported. With the track support structure fully completed, we began rail laying from the station and nearby playground. We were thus able to operate an out and back trip which increase in length every week. Rails were laid every week end and by two members, after work in the evenings. We also built our passenger trucks, steaming bays, truck shed, car park, clubhouse. We also installed and had approved an electrical supply and water supply, both from the far end of the building. Looking back 50 years I do not know how we managed it!
