Lord Dufferin did collect a lot of stuff, but I wonder if Dan is referencing Jane Austen's famous quote, with a twist. Jane Austen wrote, in Pride and Prejudice: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." (Dan had said, "He was still in need of a fortune and he was soon to be in possession of a wife.")
