Changing oil above 5000 miles is a scam from the manufacturers. There is a video on youtube where i guy changed his oil every 10k on his Toyota from the Toyota dealer. It blew up around 130k. He should easily get 200k plus out of a Toyota with proper maintenance. They found because of his lack of maintenance and changing oil so long is what cause the issue. Oil is cheaper then blowing up an engine. They have never figured out how to keep oil from breaking down with very long maintenance intervals. Thats because the oil gets contaminated with fuel over time. Change your oil

This BS propaganda and basic misunderstanding of what the job of the oil does is why so many people have *early engine failure.* The first thing that should always be discussed/disclosed is the fact that a "10,000 mi." oil change is based on *ideal driving conditions." If you hardly ever engage in stop and go driving (city driving), only operate your car in moderate climates (40°f - 80°f temps, max), never pull trailers and or don't drive on steep grades (stay out of the mountains) and don't use your car for commercial purposes (taxi, Uber or food delivery) then you can *possibly* get by with 10k mi. changes, as outlined by the oil manufacturers. An oil analysis will confirm the serviceability of the oil. Great, the oil lasts longer and cleans better *but,* the oil still manages to pick up and contain all the contamination, carbon and metal particulate mater... The oil, itself may not break down as fast as old tech oils, lasting longer in service life, etc. *but...* This does not mean that the oil magically dissipates all of the engine contaminates, carbon build up and metal particulate that accumulates in the oil, which inturn creates negative effects in the engine's functions. It's the *wear of the engine,* not the ability of the oil to "keep going without breaking down" that determines when your oil should be changed. Oil breakdown is only *one element* to consider in its function to protect the engine. Regardless of what the oil manufacturers and car manufacturers try to tell you, countless certified, independent automotive technicians, like myself, after years upon years of experience (I started working on cars in 1974) and observing the results of different oils and the milage and type of service the engine is used for, the vast majority of techs will agree that more frequent oil changes (much less than the 8k-10k mi. recommended life) is the *number one thing* that a vehicle owner can do to lengthen the service life of their vehicle, *period.* There is too much imperial evidence to deny this and people keep looking at the wrong thing when trying to figure this all out. Don't look at the predicted life of your oil, look at the wear and tear on friction surfaces and carbon deposit build-up in your engine. With modern oils, great as they are, *5,000 miles* IS the best service cycle for an oil change in modern, combustion engines, 3,000 in older vehicles because the components aren't as durable as modern production parts and design. And if nothing else, why not err to the side of caution and spend a few dollars more to *guarantee* your best engine life rather than try to hope and gamble that the oil will miraculously last 2-3 times longer *without allowing any extra wear* and not allow any wear/damage to your engine. Why save a few bucks just to possibly end up spending *thousands* in premature repair costs?? That makes *no* sense. Just put all the questions and debates and arguments aside, listen to the thousands of experienced (I'm talking decades, not people in the business for a few years who still function on what they are told is right) technicians who have learned from *hard observation* and just change your damned oil!! 😊

Change your oil every 10,000 miles if you want your car to only last 100,000 to 150,000 miles. Don’t care how much oils have improved in the past 15 years, always change it every 3,000 miles, your car will thank you for it. Same thing with transmission fluid changes, if it’s changed every 2 years, your transmission will last a long, long time. If you go the preventative maintenance route, your car will last a good while. If you go by the maintenance intervals in your owner’s manual, don’t expect the car to last more than 150,000 miles. Reason why they say that is they purposely want you to wear the car out as soon as possible so they can sell as many cars as possible since it’s in their business plan.

Mechanic of 20+ years here. 10,000 mile OCIs is a complete load of crap. Ive had apart countless engines and whenever i pull a valve cover on an engine thats been serviced every 10k, they usually look like crap with lots of varnish and sludge starting to form in area's. 5k is acceptable and I tell my customers they really shouldn't push it past 6k. I make absolutely no money on oil changes so its not like im setting my self up with some job security by having them come in more frequent for oil changes. In fact, i dont really do just oil changes. I will change somebody's oil for them if their car is in for some kind of repair and they request it or if its a really good loyal customer, but if all they want is just an oil change, i usually tell them to go to one of the countless quick lubes we have in my area. 3k oil changes haven't been a thing since conventional oil. Synthetic blends/full Synthetic good for 5k plus miles depending on the brand you use. But it's not actually about your oil! Or not entirely. All engines burn oil diffrent such as engines with turbos or gdi motors which do burn oil sometimes (depending on brand)before 3k miles. My advice is check your oil regularly if you have a dip stick that is. Some cars don't. If you begin to burn oil around 3k miles I recommend better oil and changing your oil as soon as it does to prevent slug build up in the engine block.

Generally true is not always true. The type of miles driven is as important as the number of miles driven. I will certainly change oil every 3K or less even with full syn if I drive nearly all congested highway or city stop and go city miles. I will go 8k full syn if I drive almost all uncongested freeway miles. Most people should change oil full syn 6-7K. It depends also on how long you plan or can own your car. When there is road salt, the body will rust out less than 15 years. Engine won't matter then.

Depends on the vehicle, 15,000mile intervals is a sales gimmick to advertise lower running costs; a recipe for disaster. With trucks they sometimes advertise 20-40k mile intervals, which is insane and totally dependent on the application. For example a concrete agitator truck or an earthmoving dump truck that spends most of its time on gravel roads, farms, sites and towing equipment is a vastly different application to a box truck/semi that hauls low weight to size food or goods always on bitumen. You will clog your air filter long before 40k mile in the first 2 applications, not to mention tire, fuel system maintenance. Or a truck that has slightly worn piston rings, or has cylinders designed to burn some oil. Blanket advice is the sloppy territory of engineers who don't know what they don't know. On the other hand I have a friend who has a newish hybrid corolla and only feeds it 98 octane and 7,500km (5k mile) service intervals. That is totally unneccesary, but it def. won't hurt his car. You determine the conditions of your car, what its worth (to you) and work out your own service intervals, with reference to manuf. recommendations.

While I do agree with some applications, it's not necessary to change your engine oil between the 3-5000 mile interval. Some vehicle manufactures do greatly benefit from an increased frequency in oil change intervals, such as the modern 5.7L V8 in the RAM 1500 which happens to be the engine I am most familiar with with countless hours of experience research and hands-on repair work performed only by myself for many years now. That being said, there is one common flaw, well known within the automotive community when it comes to the MOPAR HEMI Inheriting a fatal design flaw, that unfortunately limits the locker lubrication to the camshaft and rollers, due to a poorly designed lubrication system with the added length or distance, for which the same amount of whale has to travel, greatly reduces in many, but not all of the RAM 1500 VEHICLES PURCHASED WITHIN THE LAST 15 OR SO YEARS. For that reason it is highly advisable to increase the oil change intervals from 10,000 mile manufacturer recommendations for non-severe driving conditions which happens to be almost no driver would fall under that category which would equate to about 1%.. For the remaining 99% of RAM 1500 owners THAT FALL UNDER THE SEVERE CATEGORY DUE TO VARIOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS, AND ADDED STRESS ON THE VEHICLES ENGINE FROM TOWING has created less than ideal engine condition coupled with the lack there of lubrication to the camshaft and rollers with a possibility of the Harding process of the materials being compromised. For these reasons and many others, I've been fortunate enough so far to avoid the dreaded HEMI CAM/LIFTER TICK. There are a couple other so called HELI TICKS that are often misdiagnosed and often proven to be very costly if repairs are made that we weren't needed but never a bad idea to be proactive if one's vehicle is reaching higher mileage status. It was also very well-known that only a full synthetic, and you know should be utilized in order to decrease engine wear. The main problem lies within the automotive manufacturing world forever, changing their sales tactics by offering lifetime fluid and increased oil change intervals in efforts to increase sales within such a competitive market. Unfortunately whatever just to stay on par, by offering the same false sense of security by suddenly almost doubling service intervals. It's fair to say that a 10,000 mile interval he's at the higher end of the spectrum when it comes to the limits of any oil conventional or synthetic with its anti-wear edited package and cleaning properties becoming greatly diminished above the 10,000 mile mark which many customers who are already a custom to pushing the limits due to lack of knowledge or in efforts to save cost can often exceeded the 10,000 mile mark by 50% or more which becomes detrimental to the engine oil as much of it has already evaporated which causes the oil to become a thicker sludge like material, often finding its way into the oil retention ring of the pistons and then cooked because it's too thick to flow as it should which later causes many issues with oil pressure being low and cylinder walls becoming worn out due to the carbon buildup in the oil. Manufactures will tell you that you don't need to change this or you don't have to do that as often because it's lifetime fluid what they don't tell you is the word lifetime is considered to be the lifetime of that particular component such as a transmission or cooling system with a 60,000 mile warranty considered to be the lifetime of that component. Once the warranty period is up the manufacture is free and clear with a customer now out of their warranty. Coupled with a false sense of security decides to push the limits of it to save a few dollars or forget to bring it in at the correct interval often finds their vehicles performance greatly diminishing and or internal mechanical work needed to be done in order to salvage an otherwise well-maintained state of repair vehicle had they changed the engine oil lot sooner. To put things into perspective, car manufacturer are in the business of selling cars and not parts. Dealerships are in the business of selling you added warranties and protections in order to up their sales because much of their revenue is not the sale of the car. It's the upsell once you've bought that big Mac combo now you offered to supersize it that's where the magic happens with the dealership And many people are misled or misinterpret the guidelines in which an extended warranty or paint, protection, etc. actually covers. When it comes to a dealership they don't want to repair or rebuild an engine that was otherwise on its way out and have to warranty it if it comes in as a return repair. Dealerships often employee tactics that put fear into a customer in efforts to minimize their costs with a replacement of an entire engine, or better, yet an entire car, which would be a win-win for both a manufacturer and the dealership. I agree you can send that oil in at 10,000 miles with some applications and it'll come back decent oil or within the guidelines of safe but for me I simply put things in perspective and look at the cost of an engine when compared to the cost of an oil and filter change? Engines are very expensive as much as 12,000 $15,000 within installation if brand new and not rebuilt which most dealerships will not deal with accompany that rebuilds engines because they have to warranty someone else's work that is not a good business practice. For that reason, customers are often led to believe there's no other answer. Customers often express a feeling of fear and pressure during the new vehicle purchasing process Leaving a bad taste in their mouth about how they felt during that customer experience. Now that same customer that pushed the upper limits of an oil change or followed it to the T based on mileage only under the false pretence of 10,000 mile interval oil change on announced to them that if you look at your owners manual it actually states manufactures recommendations under normal driving application 10,000 miles but under severe driving applications. It is far less than 10,000 miles. How often have you yourself read your owners, manual cover to cover or sign a document that was three or four pages long after reading, none of it in effort to save time? We've all done it, and they know that Carmen manufacturers and many other companies are not foolish. They are successful for a reason because humans are creatures of habit, and any information gathered by companies, for that reason, becomes highly sought after from companies, trying to sell their product by utilizing one of human nature's biggest flaws being "HABIT" as we are the slowest evolving species on earth when it comes to evolution . I don't give advice like I used to unless asked? What I will say to someone who asks or references oil change intervals? I say "how is it that suddenly oil change intervals have doubled when none of the engines components are made of anything different than nearly 100 years ago & base oils in which modern engine oil is derived from remaining unchanged For over 1 million years now? How is this possible or is it possible car manufacturers cell cars and dealerships sell promises in order to increase their market share of new car sales? I leave them with those questions because I don't have all of the answers, but what I do have is a great deal of perspective with enough knowledge to ask those questions and do the research. One last thing to remember. Engine oil is cheap! engines are very, very very expensive. Which one would you prefer to change? Perspective....

Most people wait way to long to change their oil and now they will wait even longer. The reason you have so many people whose car falls apart is because people don't maintain their car. Your car absorbs carbon and breaks down as you drive. More frequent changes are always better than less.

I’m inclined to agree. People get extremely religious about their oil changes but the fact of the matter is that oils have changed. Auto manufacturers aren’t the only ones recommending 10k oil changes either, oil manufacturers themselves are recommending longer intervals in their synthetics. Why would they promote a longer service interval, they aren’t going to be profiting off of a blown up engine. I just bought amsoil for my new Mustang, signature series rated for 25k miles or one year and I fully trust it for that duration. It’s really as simple as following the manufacturer’s recommendations and making adjustments based on your driving conditions.

Nah, 5 k max for 10k miles a year. If you're doing 80k a year, then you can probably get away with 10k oil changes. These new cars burning oil from the factory, with low tension rings, with water weight oil cause carbon buildup on the rings and make it progressively worse. All at 80k miles.

I work at a Benz dealership. Our cars take 10k oil changes all around, on 5w40, 0w40, and 5w30 viscosities. This is never what kills our engines. It's almost always going to be a lack of scheduled maintenance paired with operator error. That being said, I change my oil in all my vehicles at 5k miles, simply because they are all aging vehicles that accumulate a lot of mileage over short periods of time (500-600 miles/week).

Our customers, who usually know jack about cars, drive their cars to the ground and wonder why the engine or transmission needs to be replaced after only 150k miles, after they ignored every recommended service item on the list for 10 years straight.

Motor oil starts to degrade after 2,000 miles regardless the brand, and regardless whether its full, blended or conventional motor oil. Reasons to do oil changes every 3,000 - 3,500 miles: (1) to remove contaminates circulating in the engine block, (2) to remove the gasoline/fuel contaminated oil from your engine, every car (new or old) has some fuel dilutions in the engine, and fuel thins out motor oil, (3) adding fresh oil brings in fresh detergents to clean deposits in the engine and remove deposits from small passages, engine walls, around the piston ring, and also protect critical engine parts and components. If you plan on keeping your car running forever or if you want your car to reach 300,000, 500,000, 1,000,000 miles on the odometer, then 3,000 miles oil changes is the way to go. THERE IS NO ROOM TO NEGOTIATE ON THIS. If you’re NOT going to keep the car long, for example you’re leasing or plan on selling the car, then 5K, 7K, and even 10K oil change intervals will be okay because you don’t plan on keeping the car for long. WHY DO MANUFACTURERS RECOMMEND LONGER OIL CHANGE INTERVALS: 1) EPA & Regulations (the oil somehow ends up in the environment after rain pulls it into sewages) 2) Manufacturers can report that their cars have a lower cost of ownership 3) Manufacturers what you to buy more and newer cars, if you do what manufacturers tell you, which is to do oil change every 7,000 to 10,000 miles, when your engine dies, you’ll be out of warranty and its no longer their problem and manufacturers would prefer you come back and buy another vehicle. My recommendation is to do oil changes every 3,000 to 3,500 miles if you want your car to last FOREVER.
