We take a pre-arrival look at an early morning commercial structure fire response, and watch firefighters mitigate water emergencies after subzero temperatures froze water pipes across the district. Is it normal for the fire department to respond to pipe breaks? I understand if it's a sprinkler pressure alarm but domestic burst pipes seems more like a plumber problem rather than an emergency fire response.

They will come shut it off and tell you to call a plumber. They have to respond to all calls, even when it is no their job to deal with it.

Yes, SMFR responds to water line breaks to make sure there aren't any injuries and to provide emergency mitigation to stop the problem from getting worse. Restoration companies and plumbers are called by the property owner or management repair the damage.

Asa a retired fire chief with 34 years in the fire service, Unless you have an actual fire, sprinklers are a real pain in the azz. I’ve seen more devastation and damage from sprinklers malfunction and freezing than actual fires. I don’t understand why they don’t insulate and heat the sprinkler manifold and control areas. It makes absolutely no sense this isn’t mandated in the building codes. Congratulations on your and to the new PIO, I believe he is definitely qualified for the job

If you look in the background of when they are showing the patches you will see the 181 Shield to the side of Brian. That is Eric’s helmet from when he was a Firefighter for Franktown Fire Protection District before he joined South Metro. Eric has been in the Fire Service for a long time and I worked with his dad at my department. Don’t let his current PIO role fool you, Eric is the real deal.

How is Colorados infrastructure not ready for cold weather?

We had unusually cold temps for multiple days straight. Some places are poorly designed to handle that, like multifamily riser rooms shown in the video. They often rely on heat cable or a small electric baseboard heater for heat and it's not enough to overcome sub zero temps. It's not like our "infrastructure" had problems like the Texas freeze.

Sometimes the heaters used to keep exterior water infrastructure rooms warm just can't overcome the cold and pipes still freeze. In older homes with water pipes running along the outside walls, sometimes people forget to leave their sink dripping water overnight and the ambient temperature of the house doesn't prevent the pipes from freezing.

I think I remember this fire. Is this the one where the police detained someone for suspected arson? I thought I heard something along those lines over the radio that night. Not necessarily the arson part but a suspect was detained

Do the alarm companies notify your firefighters or your dispatchers? Or are your dispatchers also firefighters?

Great question. Alarm companies call SMFR Dispatch on a designated alarm company phone line, the dispatchers input that information into our dispatch computer and firefighters are alerted from there.

@@donkey-xd9fh this isn't a traffic stop, so only Colo. Rev. Stat. § 16-3-103 applies. PD just came up and asked. There's no way arson can be reasonably suspected with so little information.

Mainly for his report, and so they can call back if they have any more questions in case they suspect someone committed a crime and are hoping they saw something, or if they need to subpoena him as a witness

The dude is probably the caller and property owner/renter. It is common to get the info of all parties involved just in case it becomes a court case (arson, for example). And asking for ID is just way quicker than asking the name, having him spell that, then ask for the adress, have him spell that as well and then the DOB. With an ID you just get the guaranteed correct spelling on up to date info. Obviously the dude could've refused to give his ID as long as he wasn't detained, but why would you? He's gonna find out who you are if he looks up who owns the property. Also, people who live a generally law-abiding life don't usually fear the warrant check, 'cause they have none...

The Squads were a temporary trail to see how effective they would be. It is possible that a full-time Squad or Squads could be added to the deployment model later in 2024.

At South Metro, PIO's are not Firefighters and fire academy is not a requirement. Staff personnel who work in Dispatch, the Fire Marshal's Office and PIO are uniformed, badged and take an oath of office for their roles.

Does that rig have locking differentials or dual locking differentials? Another words your rear axles can you lock just the front one or can you lock both? I do not believe so, but does that hazmat rig have the capabilities of carrying any quantity of water for fire suppression outside of a water canister? MetCom was the name of an independent 911 dispatch authority, and that authority was dissolved when the communications center became part of South Metro's organizational structure. A command staff decision was made to retire the name MetCom and after a survey of options, "dispatch" was chosen as their radio call sign.

Hey I'm also from Denver Colorado I was born in Brighton Colorado but I was having birth compilations so they flew me 2 Denver children's hospital in Colorado and I also lived in Loveland Colorado most of my family is scattered throughout Colorado but my Mom moved us 2 southern Oregon in Medford then Williams Oregon then Grant's pass Oregon because she wanted 2 get away from the all the high winds constantly and tornadoes but lately in southern Oregon we've been getting small tornadoes in Oregon no higher than a ef-1 because of a lot of mountains and trees blocking the wind speeds but we do on occasionally do get freak thunderstorms that r capable of producting a small tornadoes or just funnel clouds we've been getting a lot of funnel clouds sightings throughout Oregon but just this last June the 8th we were under a tornado warning because a very rear super cell thunderstorm had strong rotation in southern Oregon near the mountains is where the strange rear fast forming super cell developed within 25mins and a funnel cloud was also spotted have a good day u guys I used 2 be a volunteer fire fighter in Williams Oregon back in 98-00

It sounds like it, but no. In the SMFR district dispatch always repeats the initial report of the first arriving unit. That's why she starts with "I got you at..." They have cut the actual report from the engine from this footage, what we hear is just dispatch acknowledging that they have a working fire and what line they are pulling.

SMFR uses a receive, acknowledge, repeat radio communication model. Dispatch was repeating what Engine 33 already told them, but that initial message isn't included in the video. Sorry for the confusion!

First of all: Yes, they do. They status just like any other unit. But second of all: There is a video on this channel where Eric is the first unit arriving on scene and he gives a size-up report to the suppression units en route. There is also a video on this channel where Connor learns how to do that, getting her command certification. So the PIOs aren't just nice faces with a camera, they are trained at the level of a lieutenant as it pertains to incident command.

PIO's at South Metro monitor the radio while they're working for situational awareness. We typically use a mobile data computer (MDC) to update our status to responding, on scene etc. but the radios can be used for that if needed. While operating on scene, PIO's wear and monitor the radio for our own safety and accountability with command.
