Hello from Norway... To me, the American "freedom" is not a freedom, it is an illusion... to keep you trapped in an eternal rush in a toxic consumer culture.... to keep you trapped in a circle where you have to work yourself half to death and to spend all the money to appear a little more successful than your neighbor... The only one who gets really rich is the big companies that force you to work and then buy.... You are really trapped in an eternal circle, in one sick system that only uses you until you are nothing more, next in line are your kids... I live in a Rich country where the differences between rich and poor should perhaps be even more visible than in the United States... but they're not... most Norwegians would never look down on people with lower incomes or low education... Of course, there are assholes here too, but our culture is completely different... We think much more of people as equals regardless of social and cultural background...

Both the bad and the good shouldn’t be forgotten. Hopefully we learn from them, and for what we do in the future. I think it’s had to make an impact on the world solely in a positive way. My husband & I were on holiday in New Zealand that has a reciprical free health agreement with Australia. On the second dayy of our holiday I took sick & had to be air lifted to hospital. I ended up in a coma for 12 days & spent 20 days in intensive care with 24/7 medical care. I was then moved to a general ward for a week & then received out patient care until I was well enough to return to Australia. I did not pay one cent for all my medical treatment including various medications to last me until I saw my own doctor back home. We have visited the US & on one occasion the topic of Australia's free health care system came up. The response from the Americans we were talking to was, 'Gee. I didn't know Australia was a communist country.' In theri view any type of social welfare meant communism. We enjoyed our US holidays but much prefer the Australian lifestyle & our type of freedom.

Freedom of speech is good in principle but needlessly making someone else's life shittier because "freedom" is just unjustifiable. It smacks of zealotry to idolise a principle so much to blindly accept all the bad to persue the good.

Something I hear Americans commonly say is that we can afford things like universal healthcare in Europe because America pays for our military (their words not mine) by which I presume they are referring to NATO. They say this while ignoring the fact that even countries far poorer than European ones, and who are not part of NATO, still manage to offer universal healthcare to their citizens. It's about what your priorities are and how you manage your resources. The US places a lot of priority on corporations and its military (which serves to protect American interests around the world). Yes, of the NATO countries, the US spends the most on its military. However, not all of America's military budget is spent on NATO. Reuters reports that, according to the Pentagon, in 2023 Washington allotted $816.7 billion for defense spending. In the same year, NATO’s budget was 3.3 billion euros ($3.59 billion). The U.S. contributed 15.8% of the NATO tab, which is around 521 million euros ($567 million). So the majority of US military spending does not go to NATO. Also, according to all the recent charts I've seen (of the past 2 years), the US pays 16% of the total NATO bill while Europe and Canada pay the rest (84%). Yet Americans appear to be under the impression that the US pays the lion's share of the NATO bill. If I dig a little deeper I find out that they (those I interact with) think this because the US pays the most in terms $ of any other country. However, the GDP of the US is more than 6 times bigger than Germany's (which has Europe's biggest economy) and in terms of sqm, the US is 45 bigger than France (the European country with the most landmass). Anyway, some Americans believe that individual European countries should contribute more in terms of $. I think they misunderstand the discussion. The US has said that it would like individual European countries to spend more of their GDP on defence. However, the quoted 2% spending is a target and not an obligation (as understood by a lot of Americans). The US argues that since it spends more on its military, so should we. However, the US spends far less (in terms of %) of its military budget on NATO than European countries which spend most if not all of their budget on NATO. Why? Well outside of protecting the countries in the alliance, we don't feel the need to police the entire world. This is why the US spends so much on its military and you're misled if you think it's mostly to defend Europe. Also, NATO doesn't just defend Europe, it defends the US too when attacked: something most Americans seem unaware of and scoff at when told. Americans appear to be quite clueless on this topic and of course Trump has stoked the coals (he's as clueless himself about how NATO works). I'm guessing Trump's agenda is to prevent Americans from realising that the lack of health care in the US is NOT because the US pays for most of Europe's defence but because of how decisions in America are made to primarily benefit corporations (who sit cosily in bed with politicians) and not the general wellness of American people.

Here in Budapest, the Christmas markets is quite famous, among the most beautiful in Europe, but so expensive that it is mostly for tourists. The average Hungarian just goes to enjoy the atmosphere, max drink a mulled wine...

The Christmas business here in Germany accounted for 18.5% of annual sales in 2024. In the USA it's around 30%. So it seems less extreme, but it's still commercially important. ps. Sorry but Brits who want praise for not doing slavery anymore are beyond ridiculous. Most countries have done some pretty fucked up stuff in their history. In our family, we only give each other small things for Christmas or birthdays, if at all! I think it's much more important to show someone your appreciation through small, everyday gestures of mutual help and support than through big, expensive gifts! But yes, of course holidays (especially Christmas) are THE busiest times of the year and particularly important for retailers! Halloween (NOT an official holiday), for example, has developed into an important source of commercial income over the last 20 years (although it is not celebrated as big as in the USA), until then it played no role in Germany! At that time, retailers were looking for an alternative for their costumes that could not be sold because Carnival was canceled that year (the carnival season begins on November 11th each year and ends on Ash Wednesday of the following year / 46th day before Easter Sunday)! Halloween is strange, especially for many older people - since it is not a traditional German custom, they can't do anything with it!

Yes, we buy expensive gifts for our loved ones, it's normally for your mum and dad, or husband/wife or children but usually small items for everyone else, like scarf's , gloves, something inexpensive just as stocking fillers. I've had Americans tell me that if they came to visit me in Europe they'd be afraid to drink the water. I assured them that our water is safe but they scoffed and were adamant that I was wrong. What gets me is how Americans can be so sure about places they've never been to (or could even locate on a map). It also seems to be a short step from "America is the best" to "Americans are right about everything because , since we are the best, we know best". It's not so much about not knowing about things (there's a lot I don't know about how things work in a number of countries that I've never been to) but the arrogance with which we are told that we're wrong about our own country by Americans know think they know better. If Americans come to Europe (which is very safe) without the attitude and just behave normally rather than act like they own us, or are entitled to special treatment, then they will be welcomed just like anyone from any other country.

In my opinion, the times of asking whether the USA is the biggest and best country in the world no longer arise. What worries me most about the US as a European is the rise of extremist attitudes on both sides of the political spectrum. People are so busy fighting the political "enemy" in the neighborhood/family that they often don't even realize that this will destroy their great America in the long run. What impact this will have on the rest of the world, I don't dare to imagine even in my worst nightmares.
@davidmarsden9800Ай бұрын
The trouble wasn't you it was the video, made by an American who didn't really understand the actual history of the British empire, you just understandably took it at face value. The truth of the empire is fairly mixed. The empire was largely founded on trade with a fair few exceptions such as during the Seven Years War when we fought the French and their allies and defeated them and acquired their overseas territories. This war included the American colonies who had been invaded by the French and their Indian allies. This invasion had been in return for the slaughter of a French diplomatic party by the colonial officer George Washington and his men including Indian militia and for which he was censured and not promoted again. This is the war the colonies refused to pay the taxes for the cost of saving their liberty even though they were the lowest in the empire as a favoured entity. After the revolutionary war, England had to have another penal colony, so used Australia recently mapped and claimed by Captain Cook. Having successfully traded with India for over a century and having defeated the French there the British expanded their interests in India instead of America until the East India Company stuffed things up so badly the British government eventually took over in the 1830s and disbanded the company in the early 1850s and made it a Crown colony and Queen Victoria became the Queen Empress and it ended with independence in 1947 and the last King Emperor was King George VI. African colonies under British rule were better run and peaceful than since independence and the current state of a lot of them. All in all it's a mixed picture but whose colony would you like to have been? French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese or German etc. Everyone looks at the British empire but these others were far worse and were there purely from conquest not trade. Your comments were based on what was presented and reflected that, so not your fault really. If you look at the map of the empire you'll notice that it's mainly on coasts where you can get to by ship and many places were ports to resupply the Royal Navy and merchant ships and others also had places to trade goods and commodities they had, which is how the whole thing started anyway.

There is no question about the landscape in some areas, but otherwise the USA no longer has anything to offer that is worth living there. God forbid you have to go to hospital there, sign your declaration of bankruptcy. Rent a hotel in Dubai that is much cheaper, better and has more to offer than a bankruptcy hospital bill.

Health care, police, fire broadcasting and church workers etc. Christmas eve shops and most factorys and businesses close early. Public transport shuts early so that only trains to major Airports run on Christmas day. It is illegal for most shops and supermarkets to open on Christmas day. For majority of people in businesses and factorys Christmas week. From Christmas Day untill after New Years Day bank holiday 2nd in Scotland. Is compulsory paid time off, or running on skeleton staff. Public transport runs at a reduced service for that week. Gives plenty of time to relax and visit friends and family and shopping in the post Christmas sales.

Now is there annoyance that expat-type immigrants with larger salaries are taking over the expensive to live in city centres of big cities and destroying the community feel (especially combined with the massive rise of tourism): yes there is. It might get worse if the number of American immigrants gets even higher. But educated Americans that learn the language are not the most discriminated against by a long shot, and we need an influx of highly skilled workers in technical (practical and theoretical fields) and health care and teaching just as much as any so far stable economy. Just make sure you integrate into your community and be aware that housing shortages are a problem here too.

I honestly think countries are best when they have a good mix of socialism and capitalism. Extremes of ethier are terrible places. I think the big success of Germany was down to the mix of east and west. Likewise Poland is now having the same change having been socialist in the past and still having many people with those opinions. The massive econominc success of China now i believe is down to them being a communist country who embraced capitalism, resulting in mixes of opinions. Places like USA and UK in my opinion are rank capitalist and as a result being held back bigtime. (The NHS here is slowly being consumed by private interests now)

I would be interested to learn what exactly it is you think the UK gained from abolishing the slave trade?
@djs98blueАй бұрын
I suspect they might be referring to some of the economic causes of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. For example, by the early 19th century sugar could be produced more cheaply elsewhere - eg sugar beet in Europe. Freeing up the Euro-African leg of the shipping fleet in the slavery triangle thus became economically beneficial as these ships could simply make more money now importing other material (eg rubber, metal ores) back to the the UK to produce products in expanding factories. Sugar was just not as profitable. However, we know slavery continued well after it was particularly profitable so this clearly wasn’t the only driver - it was only enslaved people and humanitarians in the UK and Europe who illegalized it not capitalist self-interest. This is certainly studied by historians.

When he last came to Scotland as President the Scottish Govt refused to pay for his policing and his presidential cascade was pretty much ignored by the Scottish People!

If you come and take residence in any European country, yeah people will find out very quickly you are American. But that means really nothing, if you can integrate and partake in the customs of that EU country then you're fine. Believe me. We don't criticize Americans individually, more collectively.

If you show that you intend to learn the language that is a huge door opener. Also, in the Scandanavian countries, Belgium and to some extend Germany, they will answer you in English. And that will for cwertain happen in the Netherlands, the country with the highest proficiency of English of all non English speaking countries. It is said to say, but if you are white and not muslim, that helps too.

There are loads of Americans living in Europe so don’t think that you’d be disliked, Brian is the spitting image of my Spanish brother-in-law so you’re halfway there already. Maybe react to more Americans that have set up home in Europe. Let’s face it you’re far too left wing for the US anyway 😂

A) you should not have mentione that pimple on your forehead, then it drew my eyes to look at it alll the time,lol As one European I don't care a f... where you are, just "copy/paste'' normal local behaviour if you can. 'Fun Fact! Even though "Slavery Abolition Act, which marked the start of freedom for 800,000 enslaved people in all its colonies on Aug. 1, 1834.". Civil servants forgot a little loophole “Finally, in April 2010 a standalone offence was introduced under the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 to criminalise those who hold another person in slavery or servitude or require them to perform forced or compulsory labour." 😁🤣

The problem is when people who don't have the knowledge, like yourselves, make a comment, then say "but i don't really know" that pisses a lot of people off. So just, at least, take the time to check your facts, if not, then just don't comment. Slavery has been practiced since the beginning of time, fact, so i have said it, you 2 say things that are not fact = pissed off people, but hey, your Yanks, most people just laugh at your arrogance, and i will do what you ask, i'll piss off.

I'm just gonna skip that huge intro lol I saw the comments in the last video. I made a comment myself. Trust me, you didn't offend anyone. None of us really care, even if it seems like we do. That's just the British way. We don't take things personally. In fact those that do take things personally are often socially cast aside in our country, as sad as that might sound. We're very thick skinned people. Most of our humour is based around insulting our friends, colleagues and ourselves, so you're not likely to say anything that we'll find completely outrageous. It's all good. Say whatever you want.

There are other reactors who already offer alternative views. I watched one the other day react to that video and call British colonialism impressive. If people don’t like your take they should watch those or at least keep disagreeing comments respectful. I’ll never be persuaded colonialism had its upsides., even small ones. I’m from the UK.

There are many inhabitants of these islands that despise the actions of the invaders of the past, I am from a city in ingerland, where a vast majority of us revile empire and monarchy, as Latinas you are probably from Spanish colonialism, why is the obsessive narrative about the past ? Let the young people have a say in their futures, voting eligibility should be 16 to 45, why does anybody who has had half their life have a say in the life of a new born in 2024 it's truly shameful that the human race has become a greed, power mad atrocity, where kids die of starvation, disease and war, whilst the amount of billionaires grows by the day, the greed of those who are in power now will ultimately destroy the human race, that banana could have been harvested by a kid who was hungry on their way to a school in a cow dung hut, with the only semblance of humanity being the young person trying to educate the next generation.

I am French and I was not at all offended by your topic on the countries invaded by the British... They were very mean to us for centuries but now it's okay... we even built a tunnel together under the Channel so that they could come to us on vacation... It must be said that they are not very lucky with very bad weather and cuisine ... It must also be said that they are in a way our cousins... I am Norman and my ancestors conquered England and brought them a semblance of civilization and upgraded a vocabulary that had until then been rather poor ... 🤗😅

French here too. My comment in the post in question was not intended to criticize Lynda or Brian, but just to point out that our compatriots always did better than the British, whether for better or for worse. But on this last point, I must recognize that our other neighbors, the Germans, have surpassed us! Needless to say, all of the above is humor in the second degree Otherwise, being a type 1 diabetic, I have never paid a single cent for my treatment in 50 years. Even when my prescription is a few days out of date, my pharmacist agrees to deliver the medication to me while waiting for regularization. Yet another thing: if you think you are close to the ideas of Bernie Sanders, then you are on the French political spectrum rather on the center right, and not on the left. And again, French politics is sliding to the right very quickly. Finally, for gifts over €100 or $100, we are used to sharing the costs between several family members, it is in a way a collective gift.

As a Norwegian I can say here in Norway you two would be welcomed. Our country is probably not the easiest to move to in Europe, but I don't think most Europeans in general will hate you just for being Americans. You're more left-leaning (a plus) and so you're not going around talking about how great the USA is in red MAGA hats (the kind of American that leads to negative stereotypes in the first place). You seem to be pretty open-minded and don't expect other countries and cultures to do things the "American way". As long as you are open-minded and respect the local laws and culture you'll do just fine in most European countries (I say most, because I wouldn't recommend Russia, Belarus, Hungary or Serbia). Not saying you can't be a conservative American in Europe, but to me American conservatives these days are usually pro-Trump and seem to think very negatively of Europe anyway (claiming we're socialist), so why would they even come here?
