One thing I appreciate about this lesson, especially in Your Song, is your setting aside emphasis on inversions. I know you should get used to inversions, but it makes things a bit muddled when you are just getting used to playing arpeggiated patterns like you are here.

What made such a genius? This is a prime example how he could write soo many punk, drunken ballads, songs that are a rich history lesson, songs as good or better than the Dylan’s… Yeats and he wrote arguably the best love ballads. Those of us who were lucky enough to have known him, a friend was…yes… it was impossible not to love him. His personality was that rich it was like having 4 people in one as a friend. He definitely would try your patience for how long it took him to get from A to B but we all gave him a pass because the ends were always worth way more than means. I miss him terribly and really tried to be in denial towards the end. He was in a lot of pain for a long time but he held on and taught us all and soo much. I still am trying to feel as though he’s still around. Thanks O’Hooligan. Thanks for it all. We all know how much beauty you gave us all. It really does suck without your five cents you had seemingly for everything.

I'm 74 years old. I've played guitar since I was about 17, but I was always fascinated by piano. I now have one in my music room. I've been studying for about two years and taking lessons for a year or so. I love Sir Elton, but the books I've used are somewhat beyond my capabilities. In less than a week, this video has gotten me sounding more "Elton-ey" than I had dared hope. Thank you! I'd love to see breakdowns for songs like "Border Song" and "All the Young Girls Love Alice." I can appreciate this approach. Over many years of taking piano lessons, the ONE THING separating me from the music was the reading of the sheet music. I'm frankly still not convinced that any sheet music is helpful, given that one knows the keys and the chords, but I hugely appreciate this approach....I mean come on. Just play!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just think of a song you absolutely love, and will yourself to learn it, through videos like this (with a bit of theory interjected), or even just videos of people playing it with nothing else (that second thing is what I do since I know the chords). Even if it takes a week or more for that first song, by the time you know it, you will have learned so many other things. Do that with 5-6 songs, and at the end of it all you'll be a formidable piano player, and be able to sit down and figure out most songs! And you'll enjoy the crap out of it all 🙂

Hi just come across your videos and I am very new to piano really but after many years a musician on mainly guitar and double bass all of a sudden the piano is making sense as I understand what I'm trying to do now and playing along to quite a few songs... its all making sense 🤔😉.. tho I'm a 50s style musician I'm playing anything that's appealing as the piano is so full of expression and your video has just showed me Eltons music is great I know but not so scary now to play to.. thanks for the great lesson and I'll watch your others vids... looking forward to learning... cheers mate 👍 👌

Thank you for this wonderful lesson on the beautiful chord progressions. Many years ago I learned the piano for a while and was never taught a single chord, just mindless sheet music replication. Now I'm trying to make up for lost time. Also I think most pupils get a fear instilled in them to play the black keys which is an awful shame as those Ebmaj or Dbmaj chord progressions are just the most stunning!

the origial version i had with Sacrifice was in the key of C. A friend noticed it was in the wrong key which he found to be in Db . He and i transported it to Db and it souded so nice. This was when it first came out that was C and that was all we had.

Thanks for the lesson. When you talk about dropped 2nds and 4ths I think it's the same thing Floyd Cramer and Pig Robbins did. In that genre it's called country or "slip" piano.

A lot of times Elton just changes the Bass notes in left hand to change chord. Sometimes doesn't even change chords. Your song is arranged in many versions such as chord melody and just chord without melody.

Good video! But why when you have the rd2000 would you not actually use Elton’s signature piano sound? On fader 1 press modern this will default to the rd-1000 piano 1 sample. Then bring in the studio grand on number 2 to about 3/4. Voila!

Hi Garrett, that's a very good point, and a nice setting you've suggested there. The Roland has a nice selection on the Modern sample bank and it's great to combine it with other sounds. But as an Elton nerd, I don't see this as Elton John's signature sound. He only started using the Yamaha/Roland keyboard sound modules in the early 90s. And an older version of that in the late 80s. And even so, that sound is almost never used on his 30+ studio records (occasionally it is but not often), it's used instead in his live appearances. I think he likes it in the gigs because it cuts through the band in a large stadium, and I think it makes the sound easier to mix in those live settings, but on a commercial recording, it doesn't sound so good, and my theory is that's why he sticks to the Yamaha Grand pianos on all of his post-1990 records (before that he was often on Steinways) For those reasons, I don't see that module as the signature Elton sound. I know this gets into subjective territory, but as much as I dig the Roland RD-2000, I don't actually use the piano sounds on it for these tutorials, I instead use advanced VST samples, moduled from either Steinway or Blüthner Piano (my two favourite piano brands). Sorry for the nerdy answer!

The digital keyboard is a Roland Rd 2000, it has great sounds on it, but I'm actually not using the inbuilt sounds, I'm. instead using advanced VST software as it sounds very realistic to a real piano, and I'm a sound nerd. The RD 2000 though has very good action and wonderful features,, though nothing beats playing the real thing.

Question: if C# major and Db major are the same, on the staff you write them differently? What is the proper explanation to that?

That's because a C sharp major chord is spelt with the following notes C# E# and G# whilst D flat major is spelt with Db F and Ab - so they end up on those notes on the stave, despite them being the same pitch wise.

We use VST software for our online classes, Even the best digital pianos on the market (and the RD 2000 is one of the best) don't have as good a sound as the high-end VST choices, due to the huge memory (RAM) and HD space top resolution samples use.

I do actually teach these pieces to my one to one beginner students. What you need to do first is get good at the Mixture Parts 1 2 and 3 exercises. You might need a few weeks to a few months depending on your hands. When the chords feel comfortable then you are ready to play the chords for Your Song, Rocket Man and many others. Nothing beginner about any of this. Its this sort of thing that puts people off starting a piano journey. No fingerings, lots of musical terms you don't explain. And I have no problem with that if you take the "beginner" part out rather than using it for clicks.

The thing is, many other beginners, have found this video very useful and the evidence is there to see in all of the comments below. I'm actually stunned by how many older beginners (people over 60) have succeeded with this video it puts myth to the idea that you have to start piano young. (And also to your statement that this video put people off learning piano). Though I understand, we have a definition problem, how do we define "beginner". For most people watching this video, (and those who have commented) they have defined a beginner as someone who perhaps knows triads on white keys and can finger a few scales but perhaps didn't release playing chords on the flats was also in their reach. If you don't know where middle C is yet though, or major or minor chord concepts or basic triad fingering shapes, then you'd be a complete beginner and this would not be accessible. But you have stumbled here on a very proactive piano community here, with people who don't want to spend their time mastering the fingering for Mary Had a Little Lamb! Now, that's what actually puts people off! Not Elton John!!. I can suggest some of our easiest videos and I will link them in the next comment.
