It is not like massive lack of civil engineers in Norway, but if you learn Norwegian, your chances of landing a job would increase by directly contacting companies in Norway. You are right, German citizens don’t need apply for visa, you only need to register at policy within first three months of arrival to Norway.

Hi Ivanna, thanks a lot for the video. It is very informative. I am from Ethiopia, and I would like to apply for the PhD program. I have MA (3.44 GPA and Very Good in Thesis), but when I got my BA, the minimum years to complete a degree program was three years which was about 108 credit hours. I think the total credit hours required in Norway for scholarship, is 180 credit hours (in the degree program). Is there any chance for me to bypass this procedure?

Hi. In order to apply for PhD in Norway, you need to have a master degree with 120 credits. You cannot apply for PhD without master degree. In order to apply for master program, you need to have 180 credits from bachelor. You can take a contact with NOKUT (I shared link to them under my video about “Everything about PhD”. This organization usually evaluates and compares degrees from different countries to Norwegian system. You could also consider applying for one-year study program in Norway to achieve necessary number of credits.

The problem with study, although college is free, according to UDI you need to have saved 140,000 NOK and the school in norway has to open a savings account on your behalf, if you're coming from a country like US. Does getting student loans count towards your savings or do I literally need to work and save for 5 years? Or is there a other alternative?

It's a good start. A Norwegian ph.d. degree requires eight years of unviersity/college level study/research: The years studying for the bachelor degree, then two years for a master or candiate degree and finally half a year studying and 2 1/2 year research to get a ph.d.

@@Noblemahns yes, but it is not directly linked to the resident permit. it´s because the alternative would be to be hired for a job you are not qualified for. that will not happen legally with a foreigner, especially now during corona, when some norwegians have lost their jobs and are searching for new ones. a foreigner will be stopped and questioned at the border control. they will ask about the purpose of your arrival. if you say "work", they will ask you to document your registration with the norwegian tax authorities, through your employer, which must be done in advance of your arrival, plus economic documentation. the alternative is to give you a 3 months tourist visa, given that you can document you have sufficient finances to be able to stay in norway for 3 months (booked hotel), without becoming a financial burden to the norwegian state. if you lack sufficient documentation, and depending on your citizenship, you risk being put on the first plane back to the origin of your departure.
