They don't mention that Bob threw those 6 TDs in only 3 quarters. He could have attempted to tie the all time record of 7 in a game, but he felt that this would be a good time to give Don Strock some reps, so Strock played the entire 4th quarter. Shula referred to this as emblematic of Bob's unselfish attitude toward his own statistics.

The problem isn't whether the talking heads in these countdowns ever played football. I can give you good analysis on football despite having never suited up for a single organized game of football because I've followed it for over two decades, read about it, and I'm not a homer with blinders on. The actual problem is that most of their talking heads are indeed literal clowns, or the equivalent thereof: professional comedians. The people who make these videos seem to think the only way people will watch them is having wacky people saying wacky things. Surely they could get more sportcasters and former players and other people who are eloquent, knowledgeable, and - most importantly - passionate about the game to make the countdowns worth watching even for viewers who aren't diehard football uberfans.

@@mikeyoungblood1642 He was injured for a good chunk of that season but he did come back in the AFC Championship Game vs Pittsburgh and spark the team to a win. Also, remember that this game was played in Pittsburgh. The Conference Championship games used to rotate back in those days. I'll admit that the 'Phins got a bit of a break because it was a mild day with the temp. but it was still a road game. Ken Anderson was also a fine player, the numbers are about even as far as TD's thrown and Int's thrown. Kenny Anderson threw for more yardage, (about 7,000 yards more) than Griese but the 2 Super Bowl Rings he has are 2 more than Anderson. The Dolphins won the Super Bowl and went undefeated that season because they had a TOTAL team, not just because of Earl Morrall even though Morrall was really good in relief.

There was a several year span, that Griese didn't average throwing the ball 20 times a game. The Dolphins chewed up game clock running Csonka, Kiick, and Morris. In the perfect season Super Bowl vii, Griese was 6 of 7 passing for the entire game. That's why they say it. BTW, that '78 Houston game was played IN Houston. 35-30 Houston. Campbell 28 for 199, 4 tds.

Bob Griese called his own plays, they failed to mention that. He was a very accurate Quarterback and made several Pro Bowls. I never seen him lose his cool, that was the thing I always admired about him. The game was different back then, teams didn't use four receiver sets and such. The 70s were the era of the running back. For a QB to throw six touchdowns in a game during that era would be like a running back having a 300-yard game in today's NFL. QBs in the '70s were evaluated on more esoteric metrics like leadership, play calling and game management. The ability to move a team down the field and rally them in the final minutes. Staubach and Bradshaw weren't putting up gaudy numbers either.

Both the Cards and Steelers played their best games of the season back to back in 1977, inflicting Dallas' only two losses. The Steelers allowed distraction and dissension to cut their season short losing decisively to Denver in the Divisional Round, 34-21, while the Cards dropped to 7-7 by losing their last four games, starting with this one. How bad was the final stretch for St. Louis. After beating the Giants on Monday Night Football, 28-0, they lost the rematch in Week 12, 34-17, and were the victims of Tampa Bay's first ever victory, 17-7 in the final game..

TO THIS DAY, THIS IS THE ONLY THANKSGIVING DAY GAME THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN !! MUCH TO MY SORROW AS THE DOLPHINS WERE ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEAMS !! I WISH THAT THE N.F.L. NETWORK WOULD BROADCAST THIS ENTIRE GAME SOME DAY. !! I ALSO LIKED THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS BECAUSE THEY WERE VERY GOOD WITH THEIR OFFENSE LEAD BY HEAD COACH DON CORYELL. THEY BEAT OUT THE DALLAS COWBOYS TWICE FOR THE N.F.L. EAST , WHICH GAVE THEM THE THANKSGIVING DAY GAME. THIS 55-14 THRASHING OF ST. LOUIS KEPT MIAMI IN THE PLAY-OFF PICTURE. BUT THE REAL WINNERS WERE THE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS. THIS LOSS RESULTED IN DON CORYELL LEAVING ST. LOUIS AND RESCUEING DAN FOUTS CAREER AND TURNING THE CHARGERS INTO AN AWESOME PLAY-OFF OFFENSIVE POWERHOUSE. THE REAL LOSER WAS CARDINALS GUARD CONRAD DOBLER WHO STARTED A WILD FREE-FOR-ALL FIGHT NEAR THE END OF THE GAME !! HE WAS EJECTED ALL THE WAY TO NEW ORLEANS AT THE END OF THE SEASON. ALTHOUGH HE RESCUED ARCHIE MANNING'S CAREER ALONG WITH WES CHANDLER , CHUCK MUNCIE AND TONY GALBREATH, THE SAINTS NEVER MADE THE PLAY-OFFS DURING THE LATE 1970'S !! THANK YOU NFL FILMS FOR POSTING THIS GEM !! THANK YOU YOU/TUBE !!
@cjs831727 жыл бұрын
And it's likely that Don Coryell never forgot this game, because his Charger teams would became a particular thorn in the side of the Dolphins, scoring OT wins in 1980, the Epic in Miami a season later, and then another OT thriller in 1984, and then putting up 50 on the Dolphins in what turned out to be the final win of Coryell's coaching career in the 1986 season opener. The only time in that period in which the Dolphins got the better of Air Coryell was in the 1982 playoffs when a motivated Dolphins team had their way in a 34-13 win. Even David Woodley couldn't seem to do anything wrong that day. And the biggest irony of all may have been when Don Shula turned the Dolphins into the east coast version of Air Coryell when he inserted Dan Marino as his starting QB about midway through the 1983 season (and with similarly frustrating results when it counted the most). And yet, even after Shula turned the Dolphins into the east coast version of Air Coryell, he still couldn't beat the original version of Air Coryell.

I don't think, Fairnorth, that the Cardinals' winning of the NFC East "earned" them the Thanksgiving Day game. I do know they played on Thanksgiving 1975-1977, and got crushed by the Bills, Cowboys and Dolphins. The Big Red ruined many of my Thankgiving meals.
