Correct. The first flaw in the puzzle is fixable- say they all had their birthdays last month- but this second flaw is not. I guess It's implied tht you can solve the puzzle because David -thinks- that twins dont have an elder and younger, but we are otherwise having to rely on his mental arithmetic

I solved by my own, very easy with my approach. Don’t begin with writing all combinations but try to use all the informations that you have, 1 - he already knows the sum of product 72 but he can’t figure out the exact age. 2 - the word “eldest” gave him the answer. So we can understand that he found 2 corrects answers for the problem (product = 72 and sum = x), he know x but not me ! So => here I tried to figure out the first answer ( child 1 and 2 has the same age) Than I tried with cube From the highest 8*8 not good, 7 * 7 not good 6 * 6 good 5 * 5 not good, ... the only good answer is 6 * 6 * 2 = 72 But for me now, I know the sum that is 14. I just try 72 / 3 = 24, (to begin with 3 for the youngest cause 2 can’t be possible ) 24 is 6 * 4 ( sum of all Is 6 + 4 + 3 = 13) not good, Than I tried 8 * 3 * 3 sum = 14 ==> the good answer. Please tell me if my approach Is good or only solved with chance, thank you

This one always bugged me because of the fact that two children can be the same age in years but born at different times of the year. And that twins have an older/younger sibling as well. I get it, but there are technicalities with this problem that these videos seem very good at avoiding most of the time.

Also they may have different moms. Immoral in China but not the case in some regions like islamic ones. In the original language of this question it is possible that the term of "elder children" could not be spoken despite of these possible cases, but they could, in English, or in my original langugage, Chinese. More than that, I couldn't find out what the product of sums are until I saw the solution- they are multiplication results. Language can be a harsh barrier when come to these.

I came up with the right answer of 3, 8, 8 but I was a bit lucky because I fallaciously assumed that the three children were - as children - under 18 years old. So I only had 7 equations with factors making 72. Hence I'm lucky it didn't care anyway. Very nice vid, mate.

Solved it a lot more quickly using the logic that David would know the kid's ages unless there were twins. Any scenario where the number was used only once he'd know their ages. it becomes a much smaller table when 2 of the 3 numbers have to match.

tbh there is no need to make a sheet at all, david realized what their ages were when he said he has an eldest son, which means there was an option with 2 older children having the same age and a younger child, that would only leave 6 6 2 as the only choice that can be eliminated because 6 is the highest number you can make 2 of from 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 3 which means the sum is 6+6+2 and you just need to find the other possibility which would be 8 3 3.

@hidenrage
@hidenrage 5 жыл бұрын
The explanation takes too long. You can skip the first step AND the second step by realizing that David cannot know the ages because he knows the house number BECAUSE the product of 2 kids must be a square number and only 2 squares go into 72. The last bit where he mentions there is an eldest child eliminates 36 as the square so it must be 9. QED, 3 x 3 x 8 = 72.

Funny thing is that the parents of twins often refer to them as the eldest and the youngest. So whereas the idea behind this problem is valid the problem itself isn't. The last piece of information should have been more clear, like for instance "one kid is in 2nd grade" or "two kids don't go to elementary school yet" (for answer 3-3-8) or "the youngest doesn't have all her teeth yet" (for answer 2-6-6).

@SoloWraithToyingAround
@SoloWraithToyingAround 3 жыл бұрын
So David knew the sum but was confused between if there was eldest child or eldest children (coz he got clarified by the eldest child sentence) so both the combinations had same sum.... Now in 3,3,2,2,2 only 6,6,2 had same age of eldest children( which is wrong combination but sum is equal to the right one) then directly we can figure out (2x2x2),3,3 will be the right one coz it equals to 14....no need of all the calculations.... P. S. I thought this in the waiting time and skipped to the end to see the answer... Not bragging or anything but I think its a simpler approach while the end conclusion is same that they had same sum!!
@SoloWraithToyingAround
@SoloWraithToyingAround 3 жыл бұрын
In short 72 = 3x3x2x2x2.... So before clarifying eldest child or children... If he considered elder twins that means same age of both and in 3,3,2,2,2 only 3x2,3x2,2 can be the combination of elder twin condition and that had same sum with the correct condition(only one eldest child which got clarified later) so 14 which is also equal to (2x2x2)+3+3 ie 8,3,3

Actually the logic can be applied even more elegantly. You don't have to write down any combination. Just realize that the outcome switxhes from unknown to known after mentioning 'eldest'. Then you know already you just eliminated a combination with twins as eldest, which can only be 2-6-6. Then you just have to find the other combi that has 14 as sum. No pencil and paper required..

So .. I got a piece of paper out and wrote down every way that there was to get 72 from the product of three numbers .. and then I went through the list and added those three numbers up to see which ones gave the same answer (because if they all had different answers then David would know the answer if he knew the house number) .. and then I looked to see which of those answers came from three different numbers (because one child had to be older) .. and then I thought, so that was the long way to do it, let's see the quick way .. and that was the way to do it !!

It's not a pure answer because the option of 2,6,6 might have an eldest child, just their birthday hasn't come yet this year. The eldest child might only be 9 or 10 months older than the next child. in that case the eldest and 2nd eldest child could both be 6 for up to 3 months.
@devondevon4366
@devondevon4366 4 жыл бұрын
34And the eldest child is 'singular ' meaning 'one' child (not children) so as said below 3, 3 8 and 66 2 are the only two with same sum from looking at 1 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 as you get two pairs of '3' and two pairs of '3 x 2' . The point is if his house number was 18 then his friend would have known that the children ages are : 8 9, and 1 since only sum of the these three ages gives 18 yet 8 x 9 x 1 =72 . And if the house number was 19 (given that the friend knows this) then the friend would have known that their ages are 1 , 6 and 12 since no other combination besides 1 6 and 12 has a sum of 19 the same is true for 13: (3 x 4 x 6) as 3 +4 +5=13 15: (4 x 2 x 9) as 4+2+9=15 17 : 3 x 2 x 12 as 3+2 +12 =17 (which are sum of the product , 72). So the goal should be to find 2 combinations with similar sum and those are course 3, 3 8 and 6, 6 2 , both have 14 as sum.

@nicokra7602
@nicokra7602 3 жыл бұрын
no need to write down all possible combinations. it must be 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3. david assumes the older children might have the same age. this is only possible having 2x3 and 2x3, while the other child is 2. hence house number is 14. if the oldest children is 2x2x3 the sum would be already too high, so only 2x2x2 remains for the oldest and 3 / 3 for the others.

@Ennar
@Ennar 5 жыл бұрын
@@LOGICALLYYOURS, I don't see why it would lead to decimal value. Everybody (except when it comes to babies) says age in integers. Without this assumption, the first step of factoring 72 is invalid. So, if the difference in kids age is between 9 months and a year, for up to three months every year they are of same age and 2, 6, 6 could still be valid. The first time I saw this puzzle it was set up so the clue is something like: "the younger two are twins" (probably with product other than 72, so it makes sense as a puzzle - 36 works).
