I wanted to test and see if 3 City Girls could beat 1 Farm Guy at hauling Straw Bales and the winner gets $1000. I got 80 bales for each of them, and the goal is to get them on the trailer as fast as possible.
Thanks to AG-Gear ( ‪@ag-gear‬ ) for sending over the shirts we used in this video
Everything in this video is real, nothing was setup or faked. Before the video started we walked the girls through how they had to do everything (like operating the straps)
(As a disclaimer: the definition of city girls is relative, these are Central Texas city girls, not California city girls. However I made sure they had no previous experience hauling square bales like this.)

You need to get your facts straight. 3 inexperienced city girls VS 1 inexperienced guy. Because you definitely can't call that guy a hay haller. I know this because I used to do that for a living. Should be able to throw and stack in one motion.

Every teenager needs to throw square bales for a couple weeks to understand what hard work is. I remember being 12-13 & helping an uncle. From field to trailer, trailer to pile, from pile to escalator into barn, once in barn stacked. Moving every bale 4x before reaching it's finial destination. Glad my dad had me do that. Uncle got cheap labor, I got fed very well, fresh milk from their bulk tank, & learned a valuable life lesson.

When I was in high school, I lived in a small south Texas town and this was what we did to make money during the summer. There is a right way to stack bales in order to get as many on the flat bed as you can in one load. It was hot, and we didn't want to spend a lot of time making extra trips to the field to pick up bales that we missed. Farmer paid us about 25 cents for each bale that we had to split between the crew. (3000 - 4000 - 5000 bales, it adds up.) But we got penalized a dollar a bale for each one we busted open and if the baling machine wasn't adjusted correctly, the twine wouldn't be tight enough and they would pop right open in the field. Had to take extra time handling those to keep from busting them.
@Royalltop1
@Royalltop1 8 ай бұрын
It would also be different if they did it the correct way. The bales being scattered out. You do not find them in piles in the field. You get your truck pointed straight down the row. Put it in granny gear. And load the trailer without stopping. Until you get to the end of the row you then do the same down the next row until the trailer is full. Then you take it to the final stack and stack it from the trailer. Thats how you do it by yourself.

@Royalltop1 There is a small bale lift that will pick the bale up and drop it to the stacker. We used to do 1200-1400 bales a day, with 2 of us. I'm sure there are some who did more. The trick is throwing the bale close to where it needs to be stacked, and the stacker guiding it into place. Same way for firewood, bricks or anything else heavy.

Interesting video. I haven't thrown small square bales in 30+ years. I am curious what your operation is where you are using a small square baler. In one of the comments I read you do about 26000 small square bales per season. The few farms in my area that use small square baler is for alfalfa to sell to the hobby horse people. But even those farms using the small square baler are using the New Holland Stack cruiser bale wagon so they don't need to man handle each bale. I would say about 99% of farms have switched to large rounds, 3x3, 3x4, or 4x4. I can put 2 large rounds on my dual round bale spears on my 3 point and one large round on my loader and move a lot of hay quickly. Or you just did the video for the fun of it to remember days long past.

These are straw bales. So you can’t use them to feed. We do around 26,000 of them each year, and sell them to feed stores and pumpkin patch’s. We sell out every year, there’s a pretty big market for these small square straw bales For the bales we feed to cows, we do round bales.
@aricwantoch6660

I understand straw is not used for feeding purposes. I never thought of the hobby aspect for the pumpkin patch market. I was just surprised you don't have a stack wagon and are throwing all those bales by hand. As a side note I have never seen your channel, is your farm under pivot irrigation or do you get enough annual rainfall to get a decent bushel per acre on your corn? Where I am at we all have to run irrigation in order to yield 200-215 bushels per acre of corn. Annual precipitation here is 12 inches at 4104' elevation

How so? Should it have been a 1 v 1? Because that would have been a dumb video. I did 3 v 1 because I thought that would be the closest competition. Of course a farm guy can beat 1 city girl. He could have beat 2 of them. But I wanted it to be a challenge, not a walk in the park.

He was the winner, by a long shot. He did the same amount of work in a third of the man-hours. He did it faster by every metric except the timer.

Numbers helps for sure, but he didn't do it properly. When I was bailing for A summer job I'd just stick the old gmt400 in 1st gear and 4low, set her on a straight path and get out and walk along side it as that was the trucks speed at idle.

First off he was in a pickup not a tractor. And second, the bales were in stacks of 10 not laid out. He had to drive to each one.

@@familyfarmlife yeah I'm talking pickup. GMT is GM's van/SUV/pickup platform. A GMT400 is a OBS Chevy, like a 95. Issue with the stacks of 10 is who TF does that? Nobody. Not that it would change the outcome but would've been more of a realistic situation

The farm guy should win because the city girls just left like 5 feet of straps off the side you can’t drive like that

Great video concept, you should’ve had them stow the straps properly though. That’s a big part of proper tie down procedure, you’re not going to drive that trailer on the road with those straps left hanging.

That is not strapped down. That trailer can't go anywhere until all the extra strapping is secured. Number 2, every single one of their straps is only hooked to the rub rail, and on the outside to. I mean, you could drive it, and the DOT will just love you for it.

Preps for both teams. They did well, as a rancher I know handling two strings bales is physical and demanding on the muscles. However, I like point is he didn't take the time stack the hay onto trailer out in the flied like how girls did within the frist load. He might of be able to stack all 80 bales on the trailer within one load to bring back. Which brings me back to the old story of the tortoise and the hair. Sacrifice slow and steady for speed.
@familyfarmlife

If he did stack them out in the field. He would have had to get on the trailer after every 5 or so. Which would of taken a lot of extra energy. I think just throwing them on and making two trips was the right thing🤷‍♂️

Okay so if you paid $15 an hour I'd much rather pay the farm guy than three girls are going to expect the same pay which would be 45 bucks an hour I mean the dude almost finished on his own before the girls did the only reason they finish is because they had six hands to work with he had two this doesn't prove a damn thing other than I'd rather pay one employee that could do what three girls did

Well, I’ve never collected square bales that were already conveniently in piles of 10 in the field. Is this cheating? Does a machine leave them that way? We always had to collect the bales as the trailer was going 1mph between the rows. Just curious.
