Time-lapse process of sculpting an animal with one continuous line of wire. I begin with sketching my inspiration animal from life, then work out gesture drawings, poses and a wire manipulation scheme. My partner and I collaborated on the original music for this short.

How do you manage the wire spool so it doesn't tangle? It's always so frustrating, especially with thinner wire.

The steel wire I use was generally called "bailing wire" from it's original farm and industrial use. Your local hardware store will have it, and what they call varies. It's a 4lb roll, usually at $4. HomeDepot also carries it in their "building materials" section near the rebar (not in electrical) and it's never labeled on account of it being oiled to prevent rust. When working with this wire, my handling and wiping while I sculpt gets most of the oil residue off. And if I desire a nice finish, I thoroughly spray the completed sculpture with a primer. Also, I find it handy to place the roll on the floor and control the feed with my feet on either side, and flipping the roll periodically as the wire finishes a cycle around the roll. This keeps the wire from tangling in horrible kinked loops, and I can focus on sculpting. Happy Tinkering with Wire!

This was perhaps one of my simpler constructions, and I didn't take any breaks with a camera rolling... I remember it took about 2-3 hours. This is steel wire so it takes a bit of strength or patience to make those tight coils :)
