Great, informative video. I never go anywhere without my 1969, S&W Model 49. It’s the only deal I ever got at a gun dealer. Was completely dingy and beat up looking. It wasn’t. Sat unfired in someone’s sock drawer. Zero flame cutting on the top strap and the forcing cone didn’t have so much as a round through it. Was sold to me as ‘blued’. It wasn’t/isn’t - beautiful high polished nickel. God Bless.

Present: a fine lesson.When I lived in Alaska ( 20 years) my go to Jeep / riverboat and hunting camp gun was an over under Savage model 24V in 20 Ga (modified choke) / 357 magnum. Ammo , included slugs,regular small game #6 shot , and #4 or #5 for larger birds. The ammo for the 357 included 158 gr SJSP &158 Grain hard lead FP ( Griz country) and a few of the 357 #6 shot shell rounds. .I had an over the neck bandolero made to carry the ammo , with a few of each round in the cartridge loops . Your observation about the shot shells bagging more small game per shot seemed well tested on our many hunting and fishing trips. Like your brother I found that barrel selector a bit of a challenge at first. My side arm was a Ruger Blackhawk 357 magnum with a 4 5/8 inch barrel. My main carry rifle a Weatherby Mark V in 300 magnum caliber. Later on I managed to acquire a Colt SAA 45 peacemaker with 4 3/4 inch barrel.

Here in Southern Appalachia, I default to either Colt King Cobra 3” .357 Magnum with a S&W 642 .38+P as a backup or Glock 20 10mm with a Ruger LCP MAX .380acp as a backup. Primary guns are loaded with hardcast and backup guns are loaded with hollowpoints. If I’m hunting, I’ll only carry one of those primary handguns on top of what I’m hunting with. If I’m doing a longer hike or something where I’m “really out there” I’ll always bring a .22 pistol in a backpack on top of what I’m carrying on my person. Excellent video, Roy! There are lots of great suggestions here.

I've owned a savage 24c 22/20 gauge for most my life so a little surprised Paul didn't care for it. Back when .22 was 9.99 a brick could shoot it all in less than an hour. Was grouse hunting one year with my best friend and we'd gotten skunked but found a squirrel. It got shot out of the tree and where it fell it landed on a grouse we failed to notice till then and quickly shot it too. Good presentation Roy. I like that you have your own Shatneresque pauses.

Thanks for sharing! One bitter cold night, as you said, can be a survival situation, but not because you didn't carry the right gun. Three weeks into starving is where guns start to matter, IMO, if you can find any game. I haven't been there. A suppressed 22lr rifle could reach out to the 150m (~160yd) you need without making all the other small game squirrelly for days if you want to go back to that site. A polar bear will eat you, your backpack, your boots and parts of your snowmobile, if it's hungry. People in pictures from Svalbard carry a 9.3x64mm rifle. Period.

One of the first things that sold me on watching Paul's videos. He carried a Marlin 30/30 and a Beretta 92. Just like i was doing at the time. He also switched it up with the .444 and the 22lr M9. Those two platforms are my favorite.

Thank you for your thoughts, Roy. I can't argue with your choices. Where I live and travel in Nevada the only dangerous game I have to be wary of are cougars. I think a 22lr will keep them away. I no longer hunt, so I won't have a big game rifle or field shotgun. Additionally, game officers frown on us shooting deer out of season and without a tag. The firearm(s) I may have in my vehicle will most likely be one of my "fun guns"... an old bolt action 22lr with 5 round mag, a scoped 10-22, a scoped Savage 24V .357 over 20 ga, or an H&R Topper 16 gauge with 18.5" barrel (a little less firepower than your double barrel LOL). For handguns I now carry a 22lr... an old Ruger MK1 Standard or an SR22.

Thanks for the video. I believe you are right about Savage being the company that made many over-and-under long guns. My father used to have one that was a .410 shotgun on the bottom and a .22LR on the top. He had gotten it when the neighborhood had a rabid fox scare. I don't know whether he ever got a fox with it. When I think about a firearm that I'd want to have in any situation where I'm in the woods for some period of time and have to carry all of my ammunition, I keep thinking that firearms that shoot lighter weight ammunition would be better. The .22LR is great, but if I needed one rifle or one caliber to do many things, a little more power seems as if it would be nice. I don't have enough experience shooting living things to say for certain that this supposition is true. I keep thinking about calibers like .22 WMR, .22 Hornet, and 5.7x28. Any of these would give me the most ammunition for the least weight. I'm not aware of anyone making an extremely accurate 5.7x28. In some ways, I could see that kind of rifle/pistol combination as being the best. Would a head shot to a squirrel with 5.7x28 leave enough meat to make the shot worthwhile? Would a 5.7x28 do too much damage to a rabbit to make the shot worthwhile. What about some of the small game birds? If someone made an AR-style rifle in this caliber with good accuracy, this rifle might be good both for self-defense and hunting. If one carried a reliable handgun in the same caliber, then one would have plenty of ammunition for less weight. A rifle/handgun combination in .22 WMR would be nice except that rimfire seems less reliable in feeding in a semi-automatic. If I remember correctly, this caliber would do less damage to meat in a hunting scenario but not stop a two-footed predator as quickly. I'm not really serious about .22 Hornet because guns are so rare. I've never even seen anything chambered in .22 Hornet. I've just always been interested in this round. If I were worried about bear, then none of the lightweight bullet calibers would be ideal.
@PaulHarrell6 күн бұрын
Roy here. You are correct in all of your observations. Paul and I talked a loy about the 5.7x28 and where it fits. This would be the place. He did not think highly of the round due to it not being enough for larger game and not as good as say 9mm for anti personnel purposes.

Thanks Roy. You are confirming that most of my previous choices have what they need to be for the occasion. I generally take a Smith 642 for backup when hunting for larger game, with a primary rifle. Sometimes a .357 4" Taurus is taken along. For some reason, if you told me 3 days, I would shift over to my Kimber 1911. Especially with no primary rifle. Nope. Only black bears up here, but I've had some squirrely ones banging quite a lot in deer season. One shredded on my rain protection (cedar) tree after I got 100 yds downhill. I think it just wanted a McMuffin for breakfast. Or a pop tart.

When we were kids, my cousin popped a rabbit at fairly close range with a full-choke .410 bore shotgun. There wasn't much left of the front half of the rabbit, but the back legs were still intact and very edible. My uncle picked a gray squirrel out of a tree at about 40 yards with a 12 gauge and there was plenty of the squirrel left. You have to use the right choke at the right range.

Love to see the channel up and running, you are doing a great job! My choice for a ''survival gun'' would be my Drilling rifle. :) 12/76x2 and a 9.3x74R. It has a removable scope, I got a small red dot for it as well. Its by no mean ideal for TEOTWAKI, but for a ''survival'' rifle its great! I can shoot emergency flares, I have a short barrel .22 insert. And I can shoot all types of 12Gauge in 70 and 76mm. Should I need more then 9,3x74R is no slouch. :) I know they arnt very common in the US, but in Europe they are plentyfull and dont cost an arm and leg used! Mine is Merkel Standard with Zeiss 2.5-10x 50 in a hackenfuss mount so I dont need an extra binocular. I can take it apart and fit in anything from a violin case to a back-pack. When I have in my boat, I keep it in a waterproof bag that floats. That little S&W 649 sure is sweet! ;P But I how come no 5,7 on the table? Just asking....

For my part I see my Heym 22S combination gun chambered in 16/70-22WMR as a good survival gun. The rifle barrel is good for small game and you can carry a lot of ammo given it's light weight while the shotgun barrel can be loaded with everything from birdshot to brennekes although the latter would be illegal in a hunting scenario here in Sweden. A survival situation would be a different matter though..

if you're carrying the right rifle, there's very little for the pistol to do, other than ride unnoticed in a front pants pocket holster, so you can have your hand ON it, in the holster, and have that go unnoticed by people. If you go with a heavy caliber rifle, then you also need a very lw, accurate, silenced 22lr pistol for the small critters. I recommmend the out of print S&W M2214, but you can make the Ruger LCP 22 work, Therre's a way to have an adequately quiet silencer that adds only 2.5" to the OAL length of the package, but its very expensive. as in $500 expensive. it's got a sleeve-chambrer around the main baffle tube and copper screen wire in that sleeve-area. It's also got an under-chamber, making the can look a bit lke an O/U double barreled shotgun, in minature. If you want it to be as quiet as possible, you need to hold shurt the 22's slide (or the bolt of the 22lr unit in the AR). I forgot to mention that for use in effed-up states like CA, Cierner offers a 22lr conversion unit for the Mini-14 and DPMS made a pump-action variant of the AR in 223. I"ve not been able to confirm if one of the 22 units works in the DPMS. that thing is too expensive for me to bother with owning.

If you are stuck in the woods any gun you have is a survival gun 😂 In a strictly survival scenario I have a couple old over-under rifle and shotgun combos. 20 gauge and 22lr, 12 gauge and 22 hornet, and 12 gauge and 30-30. I had a 12 gauge and 222 combo but someone broke into my truck years ago and stole it. I just always thought having a rifle and shotgun especially with buckshot, slugs, and birdshot and a small rifle caliber would be optimal. Great video
