3 design guidelines to grow gorgeous gardens! Of course these guidelines are all-inclusive, but they are a great starting place. Sometimes starting a new garden or flowerbed can be an overwhelming idea, and it's nice to have an idea of where to begin. Starting with these 3 design guidelines will hopefully help you when making plant choices, garden decor selections, use color theory in the garden, and ultimately, help to lay out your design.
My name is Nicole Roggeman, and I am a gardener in zone 8B in coastal North Carolina. Gardening is my passion, and I like to try new combinations of plants together, I plant for fun and try not to worry too much. Since My Carolina Garden is in Wilmington NC, we have hot, humid summers, and have sandy soil here. These are all things I keep in mind throughout the growing season.
Hopefully this video is helpful for how to get started making a flowerbed, and I'm wishing you much success!

Very well said. I also think repetition of plants in your garden of a few key plants helps tie things together as well. I’ve worked hard on that point this year and think it really improved the look of my garden

You are so right, and that's a great point. Planting in groupings or with repetition creates a wonderful visual 💚

I’m an artist too and I never looked at using the color wheel in the garden! Great idea to make it a real showstopper! I’ve been leaning towards all the purples, pinks and whites… but I definitely love the blue/orange combo! I’ll have to find a way to pop some complimentary colors in. 😊

See, a great reason we get along so well, we have a lot in common! The blue/orange is just my fave, seems to be the combo I go to first! 😁💙🧡

Hello Nicole!! What a great guideline. I have started increasing my plantings this year. Your videos are helpful for me. Do you grow catmint? We have several deer and bunnies that like to munch on my plants. Catmint seems to deter them from my roses. Thanks for the advice. See you next time. 😍😍😍

It's so frustrating when you get little pests munching on your plantings. Not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I use to use Liquid Fence, a spray for those types of pests, that doesn't wash away in the rain. You would only have to spray every few weeks. I do not grow catmint myself. Thanks for reaching out! 💚☺

What is the name of the red shrub in front of you at approx 6:23? This would look great in a spot near my blue hydrangeas.

If you're looking at what's a bit behind me on my left side, those are blanket flowers (red and orange mix of colors). If you're looking behind me to my right, those are dianthus, and they are like a deep magenta color. Both so beautiful!! 😁❤

@@mycarolinagarden Thanks for the quick reply. No, I am looking at the RED flowing shrub right in front of you at actually 5:11. Need to know these as they would be perfect for a spot in my developing garden. If you would be so kind as to answer as soon as possible as my project is moving forward. BTW, I am also in zone 8, Birmingham Alabama area. So your info is very on point for me. Thanks.

@@mycarolinagarden Many thanks! Now let's see if I can get them locally. Glad I ran across your channel especially as to the zone 8. I think all the KZbinrs on gardening should make clear what zone they are in. Your gardens are beautiful. I only took this up recently. I am doing a lot of propagation and find that aspect particularly rewarding. Today it will be propagating gardenias from my neighbors yard. I have a three acre estate lot here so there's plenty to keep me busy. Since I am retired I hire out most of the highly physical stuff. Thanks again. I am a new and pleased subscriber.
