Unfortunately, all OTC hearing devices are for mild-moderate hearing loss. Severe hearing loss will usually require specialized hearing aids and the knowledge of an audiologist. With that said, however, I have used the Pocketalker with several of my patients that have severe hearing impairment and they seem to work very well! For the price, I would suggest giving any one of these options a try.

Hi Doctor: I have a question: If a patient gets a "hearing-improvement" device (e.g., Airpod Pro) other than the expensive prescription hearing aid, and as a result is able to hear very well and is no longer socially isolated, would that prevent dementia as good as a prescription hearing aid?

Yes, any device that allows you to hear and understand speech will maintain language skills, which ultimately promotes cognition skills.
