Omg watching them learn to play/seeing them discover the concept of playing, is my favorite part of having a pet who we adopted from a rough life where they were always on the defensive; it’s the greatest reward and brings me so much joy. We have a former feral, but already TNR’d (and therefore reasonably wary of humans) cat who we started feeding one winter, she’s quite fierce and obviously the last time she trusted a human, she’d been trapped, sedated, operated on, and then re-released because she would have been absolutely unadoptable at that time. It took about six months of feeding her twice a day, providing a new warm shelter for the rest of winter, not too close to the house but on our deck near where she liked to sleep by the wood pile, and then in spring, getting her used to us sitting nearby her while talking to her in a gentle voice and then eventually by summer, petting her-and respecting when she told us she’d had enough. Finally when that fall rolled around she decided moving into the house might not be so bad after all. 😆 Even then, she didn’t play, no matter what toys I tried, because I don’t think she’d ever had the chance to do anything besides fend for herself, having been born in the wild and tough enough to fend for herself and make it to adulthood. It was only after our other cat, a senior boy in his very golden years, passed away, and she had kind of adjusted to this new and slightly normal reality of being a sole resident cat, that my parents brought home two bonded female kittens from the small town they own tiny beach cottage in😂 She hated it at first, but it was only after we brought the kittens home that she started to demonstrate playful activity. It’s been my favorite part of having these three goofy gals. The kittens both showed her how to play, and also showed her how much her humans enjoy it to see them indulging in playful activity, and opened our Outside Girl to a whole new world of found family, siblings, and the love-hate bond that comes with cohabitation. 😂❤ it really opened her up and showed her how to enjoy the good life and the security of being an inside cat, from two young cats who had never known anything but the security and warmth of a loving and spacious foster facility with their birth mother and human foster mom, so their innocence and security in being provided for started to rub off on our more cautious, older kitty. She still acts a little embarrassed when we catch her playing with a toy and point it out to one another, so we just ignore her and go back to whatever we were doing before so we don’t ruin her rare indulgence in playful, kitten-like behavior that she never did prior to her sisters’ adoption😂❤❤❤ I love her so much. Seeing her personality emerge and having her bond so strongly to us, especially me, has been the privilege and blessing of my life. We’ve always had cats but her affection means so much more to me because I had to earn every inch of progress with weeks and months of patience. Now she sleeps in my bed with me and is rarely more than an arm’s length away. She’s always in the same room as me. She’s my little shadow. ❤

People who foster stray animals are angels. I'm still so grateful for my Fredo's (the cat) foster mom, who nursed him and the rest of a feral, hissy litter through a serious illness, socialized all of them and loved them. And it is obvious because out of my 5 cats, he is the most secure, calm, mellow and loving to both humans and cats. And I know it was a sacrifice for her because when we picked up Fredo, she had to duck in another room for a moment to cry😢. I don’t know how she does it, but I'm so glad she does. Thank you, Dana!❤❤❤

Thank you so much for helping them. Not a Dog person, but worked for a Cat Shelter and a Ferret Shelter. I was a Trapper, volunteer for the cats, and a transporter, at times for Ferrets as well as teaching abused, feral, thrown away animals to trust again. I loved doing that. Now I work with snakes at 74 years old. All of us can help, from children through Seniors, we can make a difference.
