The "down, up" concept is brilliant - I really struggle with hitting on the rise against heavy topspin and this is a huge help! Thank you so much for the great tip!!

If you look at the top pros like Djokovic, Federer, Murray, etc - you will see that they are not rushed despite receiving very fast balls. That's because they have optimized their timing and rhythm of their strokes. The best way in my experience is to find time behind you so that you feel that you can GRADUALLY accelerate the racquet towards the ball even if is fast. With practice and awareness your timing will improve, but you have to give it time...

You are a superb tennis coach! Even though you are teaching online tennis course, so many coach onsite still cannot beat you in teaching and improving the student's game. Just your this one lesson definitely improve many students beyond taking 12 sessions from a onsite coach.

Such a great idea standing back and hit the ball as it drops. Even in the service box people stand close to the line or even in the box so they’re forced to hit every ball on the rise. I teach and always make sure they start back then change as timing improves. Very good video👍

I like the first drill as you do have "more" time. Another dill would help is two bounce drill. Have your practice parner or coach return balls higher and softer you always hit the ball on the 2nd bounce. This should give you "more time" as well. Once you are confortable with 2 bounces, then try return with one bounce. Rhytham is not easy to master, but the "up and down" drill is a good one to srart.

Another really good timing drill goes like this: Both players stand 2 meters back, start rally. As the ball contacts opponent's racket, you begin your turn. As the ball reaches its highest point, so your racket reaches the highest point of your loop. As the ball bounces, so your racket reaches the bottom of your loop to sweep forward. Try to hit the ball back the same height as the incoming shot. Pretty soon you will find that both players can keep up a rally this way all day long.

Hi Tomaz, thanks for the drills and descriptions. I really like the part about lowering with the ball. But I thought we are supposed to stay low with the ball through contact andrise after contact. And only rise with the ball if its a very high ball, or if the main plan if to generate spin and maybe power and don´t rely to much on ball hight and direction.
@andromedia66962 жыл бұрын
I mess up my timing especially against relatively powerful shots even if they are coming right at my racket. I swing early or late and stuff. These exercises look brilliant. Cant wait to try them.
@chrismarklowitz10013 жыл бұрын
Someome told me this and it really resonated with me. If you can hit a still ball very well that means you have good swing technique to a certain extent. but if you can hit it good still but can't hit a oncoming fast ball that means you have bad timing.

That Q reminds of an experience with the Under-18s #1 in my city of 14M.When I rallied with him and his friends I was LATE on everything, but after a while I started catching up with it. Later we watched some video of Tsonga rallying. He said, "Oh, man, that ball comes back so FAST!" How is he going to adjust to that higher speed of play? The ball goes and comes back at the speed it does. The issue iss how soon and how quickly you can make your turn and be prepared to start your stroke.

To youjokester: In any ball sport, to follow the ball is the first and most important principle and once you have mastered that, timing is the most important as it flows from seeing the ball to finding the bal at the right time, then you can move to shot techniques and accuracy. It's ball sense 101.
