When I was in the Army ( 80's) we where on the West/ East German Border, we learned a lot about the Spetznaz (Russian Special Forces) They trained with that (real kind) of shovel as their secondary weapon, like a Tomahawk! That was a good Video, showed how useful 3 simple items can make such a BIG difference, Thanks.

I like that you threw a hatchet into this vid. I recently bought a CS Pipe Hawk for $30 & did a few common mods - stripped the black paint & blued the head, removed the set screw, sanded, stained, & Danish Oiled the handle after cutting it down to 19.5". I've got a nice leather belt loop & edge cover for it & now I've got a beautiful 1.5-lbs ultimate camp tool. I like it because it looks outrageously ba-dass, it's light enough to very comfortably hang on my hip just like a belt knife, its thin geometry & removable head are great for any light-med. cutting tasks, even taking the place of a knife if need be, & they come with a 22" handle - even at my 19.5" length, I can still swing it mightily with 2-hands & bring the power of Thor down upon my enemies, & it's so light & fast even in one hand (one mighty hand)...& it's got a hammer poll for, ya know, hammering stuff. I've never been an axe or hatchet or hawk guy, but this Pipe Hawk is just blowing my mind - I LOVE the thing! Thanks for this great vid, & for inspiring Chris to do his own on PM101.

I enjoyed watching this video! As most of my camping is car camping LOL. Condor makes a small tactical bag called The Transporter, it basically is for breaking down an AR style platform. However, it fits a cold steel Special Forces shovel perfectly! Hatchets, Axes, and other items too. my next item to purchase will be a small saw. Thanks again for the videos and God bless!

Good list, only one I'd modify for my list: I hate hatchets. In my first year of Scouts I won a knot a knot-tying contest, the Scoutmaster gave me a 20" Collins Axe which I still have, and I still love. I found a short axe can do everything a hatchet can do but a whole lot more. As for your shovel, I think you could find 10-12 Cold Steel Shovels in my cars/trucks, shops, bags, whatnot. I haven't used my folding shovel for decades. For my folding saw I have a Timberline aluminum tube saw no longer made which uses 2 rods, a top bar, and a blade to make a trapezoid shape rather than a triangle, but the Sven saw is also excellent. Great video.

I'm always thinking of ways to improve my systems and I like your videos that give me ideas. I use a 9-12" fixed blade instead of a hatchet. The saw will cross cut and the fixed blade can split, do some light chopping, and a whole lot more.

Good choice, a very large knife can replace a hatchet easily.
@random_eskimo_in_the_rockies

***** I'm certainly an enthusiastic knife collector/user, and my outdoor experience including living in the mountains of Colorado and some of the toughest areas in Alaska have shown me that I can do just fine with a pocket knife and a big fat kukri. A small to mid-sized knife and an axe can replace a very large knife, but a hatchet is almost as useless, to me, as a Wedgewood tea set would be in the outdoors. That's the nice thing about opinions. I have mine, and they're always, every single time, correct. Correct for me, that is. If you like the frilly little Barbie chopper known as a hatchet, then to you it's a wonderful tool, and you're correct, at least for you. For batoning, the way in which a knife can most easily replace an axe, I've used a Cold Steel Trail Master, a Busse Battle Mistress (actually, I've used two - an NMFBM and a FFBM) a couple different makers' Kukris, a Becker BK7 (which I'll gladly admit is not really big enough to replace an axe) and most recently I'm using a custom parang with a spine of around 10mm. With most of the things I'd use an axe for, I'll put one of my kukris or my Busses up against them with mostly good results, and I'd be willing to say any of my kukris would out-chop every hatchet ever made, even if Paul Bunyon was swinging them. Yeah, I really hate hatchets.

***** By the way, like I said - My opinions are only valid for me. I've never belittled anyone for using a hatchet when we've been out, and if it works for you, great. Just don't expect me to ever have one. A tomahawk? Sure. Different tool, different purpose. A hatchet? Not unless I'm having to defend Earth from an invasion of Klingons and there's no large knife, mid-sized knife, pocket knife, or Swiss Army Classic available.

***** For my use, the laws of physics don't really play a part, because what difference the momentum makes is small enough as to be inconsequential, at least to my senses. If I'm cutting down a standing tree, I'm going to start with an axe to cut out a section and then finish off with a bow saw. Once it's on the ground I'm going to use a chainsaw or bow saw only to section the logs. For splitting I'm going to baton with my parang because it gives me a degree of control I don't have with an axe, and the loss of momentum I'm suffering in not using an axe is miniscule, and I'm more than adequately compensated because of the precision of my cuts and the control I have over the axe to split the wood with. I'm retired now, and I've been processing wood like this for decades now, and I don't intend to change because it's just my preference. My way may not be for everyone, but I have more than enough years of experience to show me I'm right from my own perspective. I don't cut own whole trees with an axe, but if I were in a situation I needed to I'd feel comfortable it can be done fine. That's with an axe, though, not a hatchet. I dearly hate hatchets.

***** By the way, while I've had Battle Mistresses, I rarely carried one on me. For actual belt carry, it was usually an ASH, or me Limited Edition NMSFNO #465 with Tigerhide scales. To my taste, this is the best looking knife ever made. Google the image of "NMSFNO Limited Edition Tigerhide" to see what I mean. Oddly enough, I got #465 which was the phone prefix of the very first city I ever taught in.

Sensible tools everyone needs at a reasonable price. I am all for It! There are a ton of reasonably priced items out there for the average camper and I for one, like many of you don't find gold nuggets laying around amongst my spare change! So for me it is imperative I get as much bang for my buck when I spend my cash on camping gear. That doesn't mean I don't like to look at all the nice, but expensive stuff. I do. I would just like to see more reviews on the cheaper (read more affordable) gear out there from time to time. Every one of those reviews is gold to me because I can use and apply that Information! Thanks for these 3 items. I will put them on my list.

o yeah.... I've used a Sven saw since the '70's...I have a large one, and I gotta tellya--this IS the winter saw to take. It processes wood faster than a beaver in heat. I have successfully threaded hardwood pegs onto the screw in lieu of a misplaced wingnut. I do recommend one thing, however, and that is a flat washer between the colored handle and the wingnut---then bend it around the handle, else the wingnut scores deeply into the handle after a few years. You will have this excellent saw for along time. I bought mine in 1974 or '75; replaced one blade. Good stuff.

Say Heah Aaron, I have a Vintage 1942 U. S. E-Tool, It has a few different possi[io;s so I can use it as a pick, But it's a little heavy, So I got a Black and Decker Garden Shovel, it's lite and much much lighter, It's not coleus able, But attaches easy to my backpack, and yet I can quick access it, Believe it or not, a shovel is one of my most Fav. Tool for self defense, only against a gun, But a potlicker with a knife, Bring it on. Oh, Thanx to your video, I bought the Bokor Coye Ridgeback and I matched and teamed it with a Benchmade Arvensis 119 this set will be my wet and snowy weather set, I bought a Bokor Black Rold, I got the Black version because D2 is considered a semi stainless and I got the Rold for that reason, But I think I'm going to be more happy with the 154 CM regardless. and I think Bokor Tempers their 440c great, they nailed it. Yeah, I'm very happy with my new set. Thanx, Aaron.

I agree Aaron, you can't go wrong with the three tools or the like you shown. I strongly discourage anyone ever buying and relying on those cheap folding shovels. They always fail! A dependable shovel, bow or take down saw, and axe or tomahawk along with a good knife, any camping trip or time spent in the woods is much more enjoyable and makes easy work. Good video Aaron.

Sorry, I meant to leave a link for that agawacanyoninc.com/ For anyone else that wants to check it out. I have a dry wood blade on mine. It will do an insane amount of work for the weight. As you said Aaron, the laplander is lite, but if you were going to be out a few days or you are winter camping and need to do heavier work or process a bunch of wood........its liightweight enuf. My Explorer is always loaded with stuff, I have a folding E-tool but I like the looks of that cold steel shovel too.

Nice, short, vid and beautiful spot! If you don't mind the weight of the hatchet, you might as well carry the Husqvarna Forest Axe, which is a lot more versatile and efficient. That, the Bahco Laplander, and a decent knife should be all you need for processing wood. I also like the Cold Steel shovel, but haven't gotten around to upgrading my folding shovel yet. Thanks for the vid!

I understand the need for 2 of these tools (shovel & saw), but the third is a little dicey. I also do not necessarily agree with your choices, as I would any day choose a Silky saw above that bow saw with the weird shape. Then, having the shovel and saw, I believe that a camp knife (preferably large) would be more important than an axe/hatchet. Here I would select the ESEE 5 at the very least. With a knife like that and a saw I can't think of anything I would need an axe/hatchet for. There are of course many other very important items that I would take but that is outside the scope of this video.

I've been thinking about your video some more. For me, if I'm car camping, I would rather pack a 21 inch bow saw. Since it lays flat, it doesn't take up any room, and you get much better and faster sawing action with a larger saw blade. You were struggling quite a bit with that shorter blade. Also, the bow saw is rigid and stable.

as in my comment above, I have used the Sven happily, for years [decades] . What I didn't say is that the only other saw I have purchased since the Sven is the Silky Gomboy. The reason is not that the Sven [ever] let me down, it is just that for single pieces of wood, it is easier to uncock a Silky than to unhinge and swing out and tighten the Sven. Get a Sven for larger amounts of [winter] wood in addition to the Silky--you won't be disappointed, I promise. :)

I have a half spade that lives in my car during the winter. No reason to have a full length shovel, but a half spade is way more useful than an entrenching tool.

I'd think you'd want to hold the saw on the red section *above* the blade, and not under it. Better downward force to put teeth to wood, and less chance to lose control on the attitude of the blade and accidently cut yourself on the knuckles.

I see I flaw in your reasoning to bring the shovel... Bonzai-attacks?! Agreed, I live in Sweden, but I fail to see that the american wilderness contains vast amounts of aggressive, well-shaped Japanese miniature trees. Things must be worse off than I'd imagined. 🤣😎

@Dave Shaffer That reply made no sense at all... 😎 Bonzai=small tree. Banzai=Suicide pilots during WWII. 👍
