I had a snare head once upon a time that was so worn in and sounded so good i nearly shed a tear when it finally broke. It was just an Evans G1, but to me it was the back beat of the Gods, lol

This has been your most inspiring and helpful lesson yet. Thanks! The thing that bugs me the most is that I don't know how to fit rolls into my comping and this lesson helps a lot.

Don't ever change your snare head lol.. Funny how it drives many drummers crazy to see an old head on a snare.. I have used some heads for a year or more as long as they are alive and well.. I am not a member of the throw away generation.. Thanks for all you do so well :)
@rafaqf66594 жыл бұрын
It's not about the look, I've also used snare heads for long periods of time, and that made me realize I don't like the sound of old heads, I like it more when the head is new or not very used :)

I love snare heads that look like yours. In my High school, they had a round badge snare with a Remo head that was put on in the early 90s (a teacher in the school played it when he was in high school) hasn't been changed since, and probably never will until it breaks.

Thank you for this. It is really unlocking an interesting concept! Always a good thing to learn to think and not only to learn to play a lick!

A huge step in the right direction! Glad to see you doing some simple hand exercises on the pad. That has paid huge dividends for me. What hasn't helped me is highly structured exercises b'cuz they box in my creative flow as I get stuck repeating those patterns.

Hey man, great video. Your hands are really getting cleaned up, too. It's inspiring to see, thanks for sharing your progress and process. Just an observation, you have frequently referenced two things on your videos recently: 1) You are attempting to incorporate more "chopsy" vocabulary into your playing. 2) Many members of the KZbin community (trolls) have claimed you don't "play loud enough." As an experienced drummer who struggles with there own concieved inadequacies, allow me to make an unsolicited recommendation. Watch a video of any of the guys you are emulating or refence in your videos. Don't watch their hands; watch there upper arms, back, and posture. Now watch a video of yourself. Do this with the sound off. I seems to me that you are restricting the flow of energy in your upper body. You're playing well and making strokes from the wrists and have excellent finger control. This is how all jazz and orchestral drummers are taught. The problem is, much of what you are emulating is not coming from those traditions directly. The guys you mention in this video and elsewhere (Eric Moore for example) seem to be engaging their entire body into the stroke, playing in a much more physical style. This may be part of why you are struggling to execute some of this vocabulary, and why your sound (controlled and focused) is perseived by the knuckleheads as "not loud enough." I hope that helps, feel free to tell me to eat rocks if this comment is unwelcome. Keep it up and thank you for all the great content. DAM

Hahah!! I play with this bass player that thinks if I’m not bashing the drums at 110 decibels then the feel is all off. Loud isn’t always good, it has a time and place, but not all the time. I find practicing at lower volumes allows me to hear what I’m doing and focus on control a lot better. Especially if the kit is mic’d up. Let the mics work for you! Some people are just deaf and stuck in their old ways. Great video man!

Hey Nate, I saw you are using a lavallier mic and plugged it into the iphone with an adapter. I just bought the RODE Lavallier mic and cannot find an app with i can record... I tried Garage Band, Voice Message, MOTIV Audio (Shure) But it doesn´t work. I have an Iphone 8 plus (and use a lightning adapter). How do you record it?
@DrumTipTuesday4 жыл бұрын
That, no headphone jack thing, can be a problem, it used to be that you could solve most audio connectivity issues with the iRig2 Maybe there is some string of adapters to that old iRig2 that will get the job done, let me know if you find out

I switched my left hand grip to thumb down and after 20 mins of practice I'm getting wrist pain...so I try switching to as much fingers as possible but the pain wont go away.....anyone have this issue...what could I be doing wrong???
@DrumTipTuesday4 жыл бұрын
It's not exactly the same, but i had a similar issue with my right wrist. At the time i was using a 5A size drum stick and 16th note single hand hi-hat patterns were hurt'n. Ironically, i switched to a heavier stick, and in combination of a thicker stick, and thinner hi hats, a painful cyst in my wrist went away. I've been using a 5B with thinner cymbals ever since. I hope this at least offers some insight.

I actually did that with a couple of Steve Holmes KZbin lessons. 16th’s note phrasing and Helpful Jazz. Actually it took more than a year. Not steady work but I kept coming back to them. I was in over my head so it was a very frustrating undertaking but in the end my drumming went next level, for me.
