You can grow a variety of fruit trees in your small yard if you buy the right kind of trees and plant them in containers!
Garden expert Shirley Bovshow introduces new gardeners, Ari and Emma, to a multi grafted apple tree, a dwarf avocado tree and an espaliered Meyer lemon tree from her garden.
"Way to Grow"
Garden designer Shirley Bovshow and her two apprentices, comedians Ariana Seigel and Emma Tattenbaum-Fine, take you through the basics with a fun Gardening 101 series.
Shirley brings the expertise; Ari and Emma bring the cluelessness.
If Shirley can teach them to garden, she can definitely teach you!
Featuring: Shirley Bovshow, Ariana Siegel and Emma Tattenbaum-Fine

I have a turkey brown fig tree (kept small), a small space moorpark apricot tree, a small space meyer lemon, 2 blueberry bushed (also kept compact), a rhubarb about to go it, a passionfruit vine to send along a wall. I want that apple tree and another multi fruited citrus tree. Your team are great and I also now know about my sad plants - I will hold off on the autopsy and find some patience so they can recover in their own time.

Great video! So you don't actually need a garden, you can grow these all in pots outdoors? I have a tiny patio I wanna use. Thanks!

Hi again! The multi-grafted apple tree- you need just one tree! Re: citrus trees. Citrus trees are more able to tolerate cold weather as they mature but are never comfortable in freezing temperatures. When temps dip below freezing, either cover them with plastic and other blanket at night and remove in morning. Or, move the pots indoors in bright southern exposure.

Hi Superslyfoxx1 Thanks for your question. Yes, you can plant lemon trees outside in zone 8 (although zone 8B is better than zone 8A). If your particular area is accustomed to average temperatures below 30 degrees in winter, I suggest growing citrus in pots where they can be moved indoors. Multi-grafted apple trees do not need other trees in the yard to pollinate them! Shirley

You can try to grow basil indoors in front of a sunny window, but I've never had much success with it during the winter. Try. Let me know if you succeed. Basil needs LOTS of sunshine and warmth- the reason it's a great summer herb.

I am in the South and even though we don't have long winters I wonder about the lemon trees outside. Would I have to wait to get them to a certain size? I would love some dwarf fruit trees for my garden. Will keep on the lookout for them. Oh.. for apple--I see the multigrafted! Yes, I need to keep on the lookout for them. You only need one right?

You don't need to buy dwarf varieties for containers. Any full sized tree can be trained to stay small. And the nice thing about fruit trees is that they know when they are in containers and they don't try to outgrow them. So pruning done during the winter time is easy peasy. If you want to find the best varieties then look for those fruit trees that are slow growers. Paw Paws, for example, are notorious for being slow growers. And so are jaboticaba trees. But I have a full sized washington navel and a full sized florida prince peach in pots in Maryland and they both give me loads of fruit. I have trained them to grow no larger than 6 feet.

Are you root pruning them as well? I like the easier work of using the dwarf varieties though I agree with your point.

Thanks Flower Power. In order to advise you about basil, I need to know what garden zone you live in. Cold area? average winter temperatures? Basil is a warm weather herb- as soon as fall/winter comes, it struggles to survive. Hates cold weather! Shirely

Hi, it's Shirley. Yes, you only need one multigrafted apple tree because each different variety is self pollinating.

Really fun to watch and informative-I like the long haired lady's hair too. I want to grown fuji apples or tinier apples, and 1 other fruit or 1 vegetable. I don't want to overwhelm myself and we only have a patio to do it on. Amazing how you're growing 3 different kinds of apples on one tree-talk about being a pro!

Okay will wait thanks. I reread my comment and it was a bit choppy. Two questions: Planting lemon trees in the soil outside is that possible in the South. I am in Zone 8 and even though it warm here mostly in the winter we can get down in the teens. Also, for Multigrafted apple trees... do you still need another tree to cross pollinate? Thanks.

Don't apple trees require at least 2 or 3 trees of the same variety in order to make fruit? And do all those varieties require the same number of "cold days"?? If your area doesn't have enough "cold days" (AKA days where the temp is below 50 degrees or so) the apples won't fruit in your area.
