Just got my first 3 dollar gold piece this week. It's an 1854 in AU 55. Pre 33 gold and Morgans is what I spend most of my money on these days.

When it comes to something like a 3 dollar gold piece, I'd want to pay the relatively little extra to get one with an under 5,000 mintage.

Q David Bowers stated that this coin was minted to pay for a 100CT Sheet of 3C Stamps, that was the Govts intent in issuing this odd gold coin.

My example happened to be just that, 4850 mintage if I’m remembering correctly.

@@asheland_numismatics Yep, when building type sets it pays to choose something of low mintage but not so low that you have to significantly sacrifice condition to afford it. A lot of type collectors go for the most common date, but better dates are nicer and sell better even when they are of similar price to the common date.

Love those coins. I think AU55/58 is the perfect grade. Practically full detail at much less than MS prices. Actually I would much rather have a well struck AU than a weak MS.

They're so darned cute - downright adorable, in fact. I've wanted one for a while now, but I just never see them at the coin shows where I am, and I bought an 1850 Dahlonega Liberty Head Quarter Eagle last year, so, it's not that the shows aren't good!
