If you're a beginner with figure drawing, pencil mileage is more critical than spending 30-40 hours on just one figure drawing. Once you've reached hundreds to a thousand figure drawing, you can spend more time on a figure drawing and focus on rendering. Here's the funny part, digital can speed up your progress. That 30-40 hour traditional figure drawing is amazing, but if you use digital tools you can create something similar in a fraction of the time. Using digital for rendering will be a faster way of leveling up faster. I still love traditional and draw this way all the time, but digital painting techniques is a game changer.

I feel like people who can do really good traditional drawings can always do good digital. However, the reverse isn't true. While the skill is definitely with the mind, i feel like traditional artists have a more robust understanding sometimes, due to a lack of tools.

I really appreciate your insight on copying! I started having a more positive outlook on copying artists I admire after watching Sinix's sketchbook series. Nowadays, I do a few copies to warm up everyday, and I also do studies on other artist styles!

I've never learnt more about anatomy than when i copy other artists. Drawing a live model is one thing, seeing how someone else simplifies the shapes is another.

It's nice to hear about another artist's theories, studying, and "just trying to find the answers" in general. I really struggle with figure drawing. Working on my fundamentals of perspective and gesture is really helping, but after watching your video, I think I might take some time to learn from other artists and incorporate it in my work. Never really thought of the concept of "stand on the shoulder of giants" before... but of course this makes sense lol. Why didn't I think of that before? 😂 great video 👍🏾

Yes for sure! Although I will mention that, for me, copying simplified drawings all the time can sometimes be difficult as some things aren't super obvious when they're indicated, compared to a more "realistic" drawing. Good luck Loquat!

This was an awesome video keep it up! I like these types of videos a lot! I'll just add one thing to the thing you were discussing about "just copying", which is that, you'd want to be copying with a purpose / intention. Being very deliberate in what you're choosing to get out of something is perhaps the most important thing ( the thinking aspect ). In general, I think when you're { copying and studying } from reference or life whatever it may be, it should induce some level of cortisol rise within your system. There should be a little bit of confusion/stress involved while { learning. } { In my opinion copying/studying should be synonymous with learning, because why else do you copy? If it's fun then that's fine, but there could be other fun things that could be better. } Of course the balance will be different in individuals with a lot of variables involved, but in general there should be some level of stress at play. It'd be awesome to see you add to nuance in this area, like you did with others! Hopefully this makes sense, sorry for the clutter here!

Thanks for the feedback William! Im glad you enjoyed the video! Honestly, I was conscious with this video bc I think "nobody wants to hear me talk, I should just show drawings", but Im glad you enjoyed what I had to say regardless! I definitely agree with the targeted practice in copying. The cortisol rising is an interesting idea. Definitely something to think about as an adrenaline junkie haha.

@@MarkDavidTeo Hell yeah man no worries! Nahhh I really like hearing your thoughts / opinions on things and I'm sure others do to! Yeah it was really interesting when I got told about cortisol levels and learning. LMAO adrenaline junkie gang.

Ah dang. For me learning to do volume clicked when I did the really long drawings (12hrs) and spent time rendering in pencil/charcoal arms and legs etc. Good luck!

You must've taken a class with Ramon, especially when you cited the Beaux Arts École and the Academy Julian Lyendecker vs his illustration work.
