Regarding beeswax, I use pellets because they're much easier to measure. For cleaning, I use metal utensils and heat them, then quickly wipe with kitchen paper towel. This then makes a great firelighter

That is true!! I have used the pellets, and I like them a lot. The last time I used them, I thought they were melted and apparently they weren’t quite 😩 my final product had some very small pieces of beeswax that weren’t quite incorporated.

The best Christmas gifts! Even hard working men love them on dried, split, winter skin. A hint on the chunks of beeswax - freeze them, wrap them in something like muslin cloth, then hit them with a hammer. That will break them into smaller pieces very easily. Once again, great job Cassie! You’re such a good teacher.

you could possibly freeze and grate the beeswax..

That’s true!! It would be much less sticky when frozen. Or someone else commented that you could freeze it, then smash it up with a hammer. That would give you smaller pieces to work with as well.

Thank you so much for these great tips. I have used infused oil before such as calendula, rosemary and comfrey for salves, but I end up with stained clothes. Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid that issue?

That’s great that you’ve used infused oils! Is it staining clothes when you use the final product? Or when you’re infusing the oil? The only way I could think of it staining clothes is if you spilled the oil on something. The lotion bar in its final form is pretty solid, and it shouldn’t get on clothes very easily. After rubbing it into the skin, it absorbs quickly and isn’t very oily. We haven’t found that it leaves an oily residue or anything like that to get on clothes.

@SowGrowTogether I use the infused oils for salves and creams. It is the actual salves and creams that are staining my clothes and even my bed sheets when I go to bed. I use cheese cloth to strain the oils, so it seems like the infusion is very strong. I will try the bar lotion method to see if I get better results. Thanks so much!

If you apply the oil pretty thickly on your skin and it doesn’t all soak in, that definitely could stain things. With the ratio for a lotion bar, there doesn’t seem to be much oil left on the skin after using it? You could also switch up the kind of oil- some sit on the skin more, while others absorb more deeply. Castor oil feels a little sticky at first, but it absorbs really well - slower and more deeply than others.

Is there a good substitute for beeswax? I am aware of soy wax used in candles, but of course I will need something food grade.

You could try Candelilla wax? It’s a plant based wax that also is great on the skin. It’s a little more dense though, so you would not need as much of it as beeswax.

How my oil for this recipe? Thanks

It’s just a 1:1:1 ratio. So however much you want to make, you could divide by three for the amount of each! For instance, if I needed one cup of the final liquid to fill my mold, I would use 1/3 cup of oil, 1/3 cup of shea or cocoa butter, 1/3 cup of beeswax. If you’re using the kitchen scale like in the video here, just choose how much of one ingredient you want to use, and then use that same amount for the other two. It’s pretty easy to scale up or down that way, if you want to make more or less!
