I'm Muslim born in England... Went to Egypt to study Islam had Egyptian security forces take me off a bus at gunpoint whilst screaming at me which they only stopped after seeing my British passport. They accused me of being a terrorist because I had a beard... Other Egyptian kids told me if I didn't have a British passport that they would have taken me to a holding site and beat me until they were satisfied I was just a normal student without consequence. I couldn't believe it a Muslim nation targeting someone for being Muslim.

India's "secularism" was always very different from secularism in other countries. If the United States had allowed polygamy for mormons and called it secularism the American public would never have believed that justification. Ironically some large parts of the BJP could be considered secular in some ways if you are willing to use the American definition. French secularism under lacite is even more different. Its useful to take a global view of these things.

Fascinating to hear Egypt’s political history, their strategic alliances and their ideological inclinations. I have read of Nasser’s proposal of Arab nationalism and how America spoiled it for whatever reason (by supporting muslim brotherhood). It seems there are enough commonalities between India and Egypt to engage. Good to see this relationship getting revived and SG digging up Egypt’s history.
@JohnSmith-vn8dm
@JohnSmith-vn8dm 2 жыл бұрын
You've got it backwards. America wasn't worried about Arab nationalism because they supported the muslim brotherhood. They were worried about it because they supported Israel and Arab nationalism put Israel's existence at risk, which you can see in the multitude of wars between the Arab League and Israel. The other reason America was wary is because of Arab nationalisms socialist leanings. But nowadays the US is generally friendly to these states and pan-Arab ideology because it is no longer socialist and most have signed the Abraham Accords making peace with Israel.

A very interesting recap of Egyptian history post independence as also in context of relationship with india. India and Egypt are on similar latitudes geographically, have similar skin tones and features, there is similarities in food habits. I recall Anwar Al Sadat’s autobiography- In Search of Identity, where in he covers in Egypt’s independence and also Free Officers.
@JohnSmith-vn8dm
@JohnSmith-vn8dm 2 жыл бұрын
Food and skin color doesn't determine geopolitics, as Jaishankar says, its mainly strategic interests. Although built up trust and history certainly help. India and Egypt have that in spades due to their history in the non-aligned movement.
@awadheshkalia
@awadheshkalia 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-vn8dm There are many determinants to geopolitics. Similarities in food and clothing are indicators of similarities in culture. The time period for such relationships is not few decades but many centuries. It transcends religion because the two most dominants religions of world in current times are 2000 and 1500 years old only. Both Indian and Egyptian civilizations transcend the origin of those religions. When you visit Egypt, or when you make Egyptian friends in another country, you can feel the similarities and even attraction. It is quite akin to what you feel when you make Pakistani friends in a foreign land- a binding which is based on cultural similarities. Not withstanding the geopolitical differences between the political entities called nations.

Gamal Abdul Nasser was one of the key figures of 20th century, especially among the rising independent nations. He strived to unite the Arab nations under "Arab Nationalism" instead of Islamic fundamentalism. A strong Leftist orientation kept the domination of religious fundamentalism at bay. Opposing right wing ideologies within Egypt and in neighbouring states. It's no surprise he found a natural ally in Jawaharlal Nehru at that time, a Secular Socialist India that was Non-aligned. Similar to India, Nasser laid the foundation for Secular Socialist Egypt and even today it's known as Jumhuriyat Misr al-Arabiyah (Arab Republic of Egypt)

Muḥammad ibn Tughluq obtained manshur (patent of royalty) legitimizing his authority from Caliph in Cairo to counteract the Muslim divines in India who opposed him. India-Egypt relations go way back.

Tughlaq was Mumluk Turkic, Cairo caliph was also Mumluk back then. Opposing Muslims in India were Pashmanda against Turkic Ashrafs.

Shekhar is talking the same thing repeatedly in the video. And he is selling Egypt to us as if it is little better than the terrorist Pakistan!! This sort of condescending attitude is not acceptable. Egypt is a big, important and a responsible country and India has a long standing, friendly relations with it.

I see some coincidences, but no irony. Jan 25 is just a coincidence that it happens to be eve of our Republic Day as well Tahrir Square protests. That Sisi is a military dictator fits nicely into Modi mindset , no irony there. Both detest Muslims whether brotherhood or any other kind..third irony the place . Egypt & India has always friendly relations, Nasser was Nehru friend, both had pro Soviet leanings and touted non alignment though soft to communism..

I had to go pick up my dictionary to understand what an irony means. Well even after reading the dictionary -- I am a bit stumped. Thanks for tyring to go to extreme lengths to try to find some connections between his trip to India and India. "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect." -- well anyway he is here on Jan 25th which is 3 years after Tahrir, well it is a coincidence and I do not see an irony -- unless there was major protests as soon as he landed in India. Well the 2nd and 3rd are so frivolous that I do not even what to mention them here. All he wanted to do was give a bit of background on Sisi (who is a dictator in the vein of Xi, etc.. but that was glossed over) and Egypt, he should have just proceeded to do that and give us an overview of recent events of Egypt and how Sisi came to his current position and the geopolitical issues surrounding Egypt. There is no real need to try to spin and find connections where none or really flimsy ones exist
