Me, as a person who is studying programming in school, starting to sweat heavily. Surely life couldn't be so cruel that as a +30 yead old guy learning a new skill, it will become meaningless before I get a job

Please consider that things like Copilot have been around for over a year, and you dont see many people being laid of because of it. Now, the technology will of course be more sophisticated in a few years, but saying it will completely replace it in that timeframe seems unlikely. Just look at the rich history of statements "X will completely replace Y", and see how often that holds truth. Now, it is of course possible that coding as a skill will become completely obsolete. But in the years that it takes to realize that, you will have plenty of time to go with the flow. And knowing your way around a computer, and how it functions(i.e the way code works), will be just as useful as it is now.

No. It can write code, but it can not think. Programmers are rarely being paid for regurgitating simple, obvious solutions that you could just as easily have copy-pasted from stack overflow. And that's all this AI can do. It is about as close to doing what programmers are paid to do as someone who has just learned how to speak is to writing an original novel.

@@Cxeb I mean, it is more capable than just copy and paste. When describing bugs to it it seems capable to fix them. Now, this could just be another copy and paste procccess, but we humans also try to appy what we already know to problems. I cant really say how much its modus operandi works differently to ours, because I dont know enough about AI. Also, I think most people are worried about what AI can do in 2 - 5 years, not what it can do rn

@@Koomberi I don't want to be pessimistic, but I think its ahistoric to believe this will happen. Historically advances in technology often lead to depressing wages, or the need to change profession. Now, i dont think it will hit programming as some project, but it will definetively not be as utopian as you make it out to be.

I use R and python for data analysis and tried some stuff out. Its pretty good with simple tasks. Great for running through data (I would check the code though), a bit wonky trying to create a program. I'm not a software engineer, so I may not have been prompting the right things. In any case, it's good enough to thin out the industry probably. At the end of the day, it's the industry hiring and it will go where the market goes. Programmers will probably be expected to start at a higher level. Might decrease the number of capable candidates, which wouldn't matter since less would be needed. I remember watching a documentary on Japanese animation and sort of expect something like that to happen here. Animation has key drawings that make the animation and inbetweens to smooth it out. The key animators are the big shots, while inbetweeners are starting positions. But since they outsourced all the inbetweening, Japanese animators now start out as layout and key animators. The big shots focus on big action scenes or something. Now instead of outsourcing to poor countries, it's to AI. Who knows, could go anywhere really.

Programmers might be scared, but our strength isn't in writing code, it's in designing a program and thinking about how certain parts interact with eachother. Sure, you could use the AI to create operations, but you still need to know what to ask of it and how to use it. Open AI feels like an advanced and more reliable stack overflow/google and my anxiety comes from it potentially becoming a paid resource that everyone needs to compete with those who use it

At the point that tools like chat GPT completely replace programmers, AI would have replaced almost every other job and we will be probably have a universal basic income system and be living like the humans in wall-e. If you're learning to program, relax and carry on. I was born in 1989, i was the first generation to grow up with a computer. I remenber my parents and teachers all telling me the job i should be going for is in computers. Your employer will expect you to be good with computers. Even at a young age with windows 98, a dial up connection and floppy discs i could see computers would eventually compete and win against human workers. I thought it would happen sooner to be honest

I don't think it will fully replace any of these jobs, but it will change them. Instead of the junior developer working all day writing 1000 lines of code or however much, they will write 15,000 lines of code with this AI. It will increase their productivity, and then the senior dev will review the code with the junior dev and help them learn where the AI got it wrong or could be better. Although, at some point AI would get good enough that it could do literally anything better than a human, and at that point things will really start to get weird.

@@onee no I think you are misunderstanding how things work. When you change the economics, everything changes. Development work would now be 15x cheaper, so far more of it would now be economically viable. There would be more clients, more work to do. If what you said was true, our economy would have ground to a halt just due to all of the existing increases in efficiency, e.g. the steam engine would have put so many people out of jobs that the employment rate would never have recovered.

Horse based transportation has significantly shrunk in the US and anyone at that time would've been hit. The transcontinental telegraph wiped out the pony express around that time, as another example. In turn new jobs were created. Like switch operators. Then they were made obsolete and other jobs are created. We're not going to see 15x more operating systems, or 15x more finance trackers. We may see a few more start ups as less people are needed to do more. Maybe people will find new jobs in checking code (expanded QA), which will probably be poorly paid. Or be forced to find work elsewhere, as the pony express and switch operators did.

In fact, doctors, lawyers, and just about every other profession will be replaced before a software engineer simply due to the nature of what we do. At the very least we will need an army of software engineers just to maintain the AI. If a skill can be automated by this thing, it wasn't much of a skill to begin with.

I don't think those patients and clients will ever be comfortable putting their chances on a computer, most people wouldn't. Software Engineering on the other hand, and well as other types of engineering I believe could be easily replaced in not too long from now.

A big part about writing includes human experiences. For example, when I write about how a video game changed my life, people will read it and keep it in their hearts as a memorabilia. They’ll remember the game’s journey as well as my own. Believe me, I’ve given ChatGPT enough prompts to write such articles. In the end, it gave me generic write-ups that summed up basic things. But none of it felt personal.

I think it cant fully replace it as of yet but it will get smarter the more copy it analyzes and the more specific prompts you provide it. I think copywriting needs to be meshed with other skills like funnel strategy etc so copywriters have more value.

I think it should be mentioned, that you need to keep in mind that as someone who works in the software engineering and IT field I have some experience and from what I can see, you need a lot more skills than just writing code, there is understanding how to implement things into the current stack or software, be able to analyze how to make things either more stable or faster, which is something that chat gpt cannot do. Also good effing luck using these AI tools in your workplace, where they will be or even are banned or blocked. It would be obvious why companies do not want their employees to use such tools, since 99% of the time you will be working with corporate data that cannot under any circumstances be indexed on the internet. In case you did not know anything you put into the chat bot or even when using its API, it will index the result on the internet and if that is found out, which it will be, then you will be fired on the spot. So no AI will not replace developers or even tech support people, because companies are banning the use of AI tools in the workplace. You can use it in your own projects, but that is about it.

You're looking at it from the point of the top programmers won't be replaced which is a flawed argument. Just like when we got the tractor and other more advanced farm equipment where one person could replace 10 workers we will see the same thing here, only on much more fields. Most will be replaced and the entry skill level will be much higher. Srry but it won't replace junior programmers, junior programmers don't just create basic boilerplate layouts. They work with designers and other programmers to implement designs and have to fetch data from APIs that are too customized for the AI to generate on its own or understand. Also use that data to create interesting dynamic UI. These are too much for the bot too handle because it's complexity that requires problem solving, not just copy pasting.

Sorry buddy, GPT is able to consume and store data from API's in databases without much issue. Even before, companies didn't want juniors if they were strapped for cash, because they view it as a long-term investment, now, i think, it'l be even more so. Overall i think the market for dev jobs is going to struggle a bit, because of this and GitHub Copilot, but we still have to wait and see how it will perform at scale, long-term.

But ppl like the creator of this video has 0 clue about the standards of generative AI and how it will always be limited by the answers that were manually curated by human beings. If u have an actual app with some kind of data flow complexity and u ask chatgpt to fetch some data for u and do something with that data under the context of ur app, it will never be able to do it. Especially if u ask the bot to solve a problem in ur app that's related to the data flow. And that is because it is generating responses that a human being wrote, not the bot creating an original response. Programming is about problem solving, bots don't problem solve until they gain intelligence which relies on a huge wall called quantum computers which won't be available to us in our lifetime.

If people lose their jobs because 1 person does 10 people's job then surely the amount of business competition will increase because what stops those other 9 setting up a program or service to compete. It will not replace developers anytime soon. It will only make programmers more efficient with their time as this will be a great tool for programmers. And it will solve the shortage of developers and in coming years there wont be much demand for developers and thus the higher pay they are enjoying will not be there as programming will become less time consuming and easy to do. It’s ironic that AI programmers will eliminate the need for junior and eventually most programmers and a reflection of human greed and callousness. Manufacturing eliminated entire industries as well, but AI eliminates intellectual work and you’re left with small sectors of creative work or personal contact related work. This will absolutely not replace Software Engineers. There are at least 5 reasons why it will be impossible to replace software engineers with AI at least in the near future. 1. The output and input requires knowledge of Software, this alone makes it impossible since any other profession wouldn't know what to do with the output and certainly wouldn't know the input required to get a correct answer. 2. Your code examples were extremely trivial, even for an intern, when dealing with complex systems that cannot have a mistake, and have hundreds of layers of complexity, no company (At least not one that wants to stay in business) is going to trust an AI to produce bug free production quality code without it being rigorously tested, so you would need software engineers just for that reason alone. 3. It is very well known that chatgpt generates bugs in code, and when those bugs inevitably occur, who is going to know how to fix them, or even locate them? You would need Software Engineers who know where the code is located, and how to fix it. 4. The prompt writing process is going to require Software Engineers with in depth knowledge of how the systems work to begin with, what are companies going to do, get a program manager to write the prompts!? that is laughable. And if that wasn't enough, 5. Even if the AI gets to a point where it never makes a mistake (is that even possible?) You still need Software Engineers to maintain the AI. With that said, one day we might generate a true AI where the entity is self aware, can learn without being programmed and repair itself and when that day comes, EVERYONE will be out of a job, but that isn't today. Lastly, Software Engineers will likely be the last to go, Doctors, lawyers, youtubers, celebs will all be useless before the Software Engineer position is no longer needed. Isn't abstraction a long running theme in coding? We've come this far in making coding accessible via human-esque languages while still experiencing a shortage of technically minded workers. I don't think the shortage will end. We can add chatgpt or whatever into the mix and still end up with a labor force that continues to groan at the idea of learning IT/coding skills.

Absolutely it's going to replace teachers. I can ask it just about any question instead of having to go to my teacher and it'll spit it out in a second versus me having to drive to the college, wait for their office hours, etc. I'm in college now, finished all my general education, now I'm in calculus 2, physics with calculus 1, and taking my 2nd programming class because I thought computer science would be a good degree to get. Now I'm like wtf I have to change my major. Education is a field that is notoriously stuck in it's ways, and really difficult to make changes to both in terms of structure and integrating new tech. If you're ever in the need of a VHS player your local high school probably has one. The most use predictive text tools will get in schools in the upcoming years, is likely going to be students using it themselves to try and get out of having to write their own essays. Also, predictive text teaching assistants aren't necessarily the most efficient and reliable way to learn new things. AI is a big deal in way that the internet, computers and smartphones have been a really big deal. It's going to change how a lot of fields do things, but it's not going to delete the need and necessity for human to human guidance in learning.

I think maybe you're right about chatgpt replacing #3, but I disagree with #1 and especially #2. Copywriting will probably evolve into more of an editing or design role (i.e content design or UX writing, which are already careers). 1) I think maybe in the future copywriting can become fully extinct, but chatgpt is not evolved to that point yet 2) chatgpt can write simple programs well, but it falters with the more complex stuff. Also, even if AI becomes powerful enough to write these complex programs, there still needs to be a workforce to manage/modify AI and security systems (especially if bad actors can use adversarial AI to their own advantage, too)

Interesting video. I don't think chatGPT will be replacing any of the jobs described in this video. Will it replace copywriters/bloggers? I think not because it is no different from one human being chosen over another. If people like a particular blogger's or copywriter's style then they will follow that blogger or choose that copywriter regardless of whether they are human or not. So if you like blogging or your a copywriter then keep doing it and use AI to help you deliver value faster but in your unique style. Also, lets imagine most companies do use AI to produce their marketing material, pretty soon your going to see generic, non inspiring adverts and billboards popping up, just like big game studios keep to the tried and true while indie developers take risks and push boundaries. Will it replace programmers? Nope, I don't think so, even junior programmers. I think this because writing code is not what brings value, programmers are always looking for ways to write less code, not more. Sure, once in a galaxy far far away programmers were paid per lines of code but those days are long gone. A programmer's value is in their ability to solve technical problems for the business in a timely, cost effective and scalable fashion. If an AI chatbot can help the programmer to do that by taking away the mundane tasks then all the better. But hey, if you want to write the code yourself because you feel that you'll add more value that way (e.g. AI produced code wasn't optimized enough and that piece of code code had to be efficient, AI code was hard to read, it would be quicker for you to write the code than to explain to the AI what you want, etc), then write the code yourself, it's your choice. Will it replace customer support staff? Again I don't think so. It is one thing to tell send a customer a troubleshooting guide and quite another to connect with the customer on a level that an AI never could. I can just imagine the PR fallout as a company goes into damage control because it's AI chatbot gave a customer the wrong advice and they ended up investing in the wrong product or taking out the wrong insurance policy. Yes they will alleviate the more mundane aspect of CS in a similar way that an FAQ or a troubleshooting guide does but they will not replace people. We have to keep in perspective that it is not technological advancements that replace jobs, it changes how we do jobs, yes, but it is people that make use of those advancements who overtake people who don't, simply because it allows them to deliver more value more often. Whatever your job, understand your business, invest in yourself, and focus on delivering value while allowing AI to help keep your life interesting; no boring moments.

So when it comes to programming it’s more then writing scripts. First off you would have to be a programmer to understand what the Ai is giving you and how to run it. The average person wouldn’t even know where to put that python script that was created. Next take into account that programming is more then just web development. What if you have to write some c or low level languages that need to be compiled and then output it as an executable. This is more of a tool for programmers then a job replacement. I played around with Chat GPT and tried to generate some programs. In most cases it still takes a programmer to explain to GPT what program to generate. Then I tried to give it one of the simpler problems from this year's ICPC (international collegiate programming contest), although it generated a correct solution, it was very straight forward and the time complexity was too big. After asking it to optimize it multiple times it failed to do so. So apart from some fairly simple scripts or functions, we are safe guys.

My point is that Chat GPT is a language model that does not specialize in generating a code like GitHub Copilot for example so no, it won't replace programers in future. They are both build on top of GPT-3 so AI sure can generate some advanced code, BUT... As I said previously, in order to make advanced code, it still takes a programmer to take the AI by the hand and guide it towards the desired outcome (for now). On top of that, if we take it from the perspective of software engineer, most of the time even the client doesn't know what they want and you have to explain to them that what they want is plain nonsence. So for the time being, I think I'm safe.

Don’t fall for the panic, friend. I’m a professional copywriter and I promise you most serious marketers and writers aren’t scared. There are so many things we can do that AI can’t. Here are a few things to remember: 1) KZbin influencers make money off of your fear because it keeps you clicking 2) Your fear will keep you from creating 3) You can’t stop AI, but you can work on your craft and get better. I was scared at first as well. Then I gave it a try and found out how it can help me. Now I treat it as an assistant that gives me new angles on content when I’m busy.

The only people that AI will replace are people who aren’t good at their jobs. For example ChatGPT doesn’t write great blogs right now. They’re very bland and often incorrect. The copy is becoming more generic as it goes as well. The big problem is that influencers are misrepresenting how well it writes copy. Then company executives are making decisions based on faulty information. Finally, unless ChatGPT replaces SEO, businesses that rely on it for content generation are going to struggle against the algorithm changes it forces Google to make.

How do I say that I'm just recently started learning about coding. want to be app dev or game dev, and I have to go back to highschool. So it's about 5 or 6 years 'till I get a C.S degree or dev job. as we know AI ' ll grow over in next closely year (I mean It can't take over all dev or coding position but it'll absolutely replace and reduce most of the job opportunites in tech industry and other fields.) It might even replace therapists, any types of advisement jobs, some doctors, lawyers unless there is a need for court, probably many youtubers 😆. Any job of an individual that has to learn a vast amount of knowledge that is later spoken only to clients - will be mostly replaced by systems like ChatGPT, only the best professionals will be unscathed. Chat GPT is like a world library that can speak. It can't really think or create, but it can summarize and restructure any information very accurately. Very soon we'll be like in Wall-E

Therapists unlikely, a part of therapy is, having a human listen to you, like chat GPT can give empathetic sounding expressions, but you know it's not a human you are aware that your feelings are not actually being talked back to you. Like as a person who experienced Trauma to the point of unaliving myself due to grape. I assure you having a human specifically is listening to you and understanding where you are going through is what's needed. Plus you can gurentee a therapists confidentially a lot more so than an AI that could in theory have a data breach which can have everyone know your issues. Because with hackers that is a thing that can happen and would work great for blackmail for people less willing to be open to people about their issues. To the pbulic.

@@ecos889 If you ask the right questions, AI can potentially have better quality of answers and instructions than a skilled therapist. However most people wouldn't have the discipline to regularly check the AI system for therapy, versus having scheduled appointments with a therapist and as a result AI for therapy would have worse results. A therapist can also radiate good emotions while listening or giving instructions to client, while AI can't. This as a result can imprint the therapists instructions and copying mechanisms much better than just reading or listening to AI. Also the way people perceive and label information to be trustworthy and worth consideration is through a authoritarian system. For example person X make twice more money than person Y, and as a result X's information is generally speaking more trustworthy and worth memorizing and listening to. Similarly a skilled therapist has more authority and respect than an AI in the eyes of a client therefore everything a therapist says is taken more seriously. The perception of AI being a lesser "specialist" and someone not being as trustworthy can change though, if for example AI develops incredible and proven merits over the years and gains exceptional trustworthiness.

Using a turtorial video I found on youtube and ChatGPT, I was able to create chatbot that I can talk & listen to without the need to type anything. ChatGPT understood what I was looking for and wrote me just about all the code I needed. This AI not only writes the code, it explains everything very clearly.

You could do it just by reading a few blog posts anyway though. There is probably some chatbot implementation already accessible and ready to copy-paste. I code a lot and that kind of task is not something I would get payed for, as you can do it just in a few minutes by a quick google search. If you have some more complicated task, then AI gets pretty useless (at least for now). Especially if this task requires you to understand a design of a system you're using.

​@@Copilot1204 I'm finishing my CS degree and I do some research in ML and most of my colleagues don't treat these AI breakthroughs that seriously. I don't think you should switch majors if you're passionate about math and problem solving. Just avoid learning stuff that is very repetitive and doesn't require you to understand some bigger picture. Try learning how to learn quickly and how to switch between different fields. That's what I believe is expected from a good CS graduate. You could freak out just as well because of stackoverflow, or even the internet - you can find almost everything here already, but people still have jobs. I may be wrong of course, but I believe that good CS graduate is simply good at solving problems, try being that, programming is just a tool. Watch some Yannic Kilcher videos. He's ML researcher and he will make you feel better, because he's much less confident about all these chatbots. Good luck with your major.

My problem is I get bored really easily and I fall asleep studying sometimes. That’s why I failed that last few times it’s because I get distracted so easily. But yeah I think computer science is the most interesting out of all the majors besides business that’s it’s to be frank. Do you happen to be good at java? I don't think it's 100% for sure these jobs will be made redundant. It may in fact might increase the demand for them. Because you can't guarantee what it says will be correct, there will always need to be a human to check the results and modify if needed. Going from 80% correct to 100% correctness is not going to be easy, if it's even possible. It will however increase the productivity of people significantly thus reducing the cost to employee them, which may in turn increase their demand. A company that isn't looking to hire a junior programmer at today's rates, would jump at the chance if they cost a fifth of what they are now. Increasing productivity 5 times is the essentially same thing.

I don’t think this will replace the people in these fields, it will supercharge them. Like having one cashier with 10 self checkout machines. AI copyright often plagiarizes and Copyrighters can correct and adjust style with greater volumes. Programmers can use AI to do the heavy lifting and allow for new ideas.
