Hi, thank you so much for helping us in our path to improve our american accent. I am having a hard time knowing about when to use a schwa sound, for instance I'd like to know if speaking in general, all weak sylabes use the schaw sound, could this be sort of a rule? and in the other hand, besides IPA :), if there a way to find out which is the secondary stressed sylable in words with more than 3 sylabes or even with 2 sylables? , for instance in the word banana I understand it has the stressed sylable and two weak sylables with the schwa sound, so no secondary stressed sylable is found in it. I hope I could made myself clear with my question. I wish you the best and I'd like to say thanks so much again for your awesome job!.
@Theaccentchannel
@Theaccentchannel 2 жыл бұрын
I would say that as a general rule, yes, use the schwa in an unstressed syllable, especially if the word has 3 or more syllables. Of course there will be exceptions (there always are) but this would definitely help your overall rhythm and timing when speaking English. I always tell my students not to worry too much about about secondary stress. If you make the vowel louder, longer, and go up in pitch on the strongest syllable and rush through (use the schwa) on the weakest syllable, everything else will just fall into place. And don't be afraid to exaggerate the contrast between the strong and weak syllables. Thanks for the great question!

When there are lots of content words in a phrase (thought group), not all content words receive the same emphasis. I like to think of it like "primary", "secondary" and "unstressed". There are KEY words. What's your thoughts on that?
@Theaccentchannel
@Theaccentchannel 2 жыл бұрын
I think that is a great way of looking at it. Adding varying degrees of stress makes your speech more interesting and expressive. Thanks for sharing!

Do you mean that words that contains prefixes have secondary stress Thanx
@Theaccentchannel
@Theaccentchannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, and great question. No, prefixes do not always receive the secondary stress. There are a lot of variables. A few examples: The word "project". As a noun, the prefix is stressed /PRAH-jekt/, as a verb the prefix is unstressed /pruh-JEKT/. The prefix "con" sometimes it gets primary stress = "constant" = /KAHN-stuht/, sometimes it get secondary stress = "continue" = /kuhn-TIHN-tuuu/. There are some rules and patterns that can be learned, but as I said, not one overall rule to use with all prefixes. Or suffixes, for that matter. I wish there were!!! Thanks for watching.
