A painting that was auctioned for HK$28.8 million ($3.7 million) two days ago has gone missing, police said, with media reports on Wednesday suggesting cleaners may have inadvertently thrown the artwork out.
The 2012 painting "Snowy Mountain", by Chinese artist Cui Ruzhuo, was reported missing by Chinese auctioneers Poly Auction on Tuesday afternoon after the auction on Monday, police told Reuters.
Ming Pao newspaper reported that police had checked CCTV footage at the Grand Hyatt hotel, where the auction took place, which showed cleaners removing the painting. That raised fears that the painting had been sent out with the garbage to the city's landfill.
Poly Auction Hong Kong was not immediately available for comment. Police could not confirm the media report about the painting being thrown out.

Gladis Young, director of communications at the Grand Hyatt hotel, said hotel staff were not involved because organizers of events involving valuable items usually hired external staff to deal with security and handling goods.
On Tuesday, a rare Ming Dynasty 'chicken cup' broke world auction records for Chinese porcelain after it sold for HK$281.2 million ($36.3 million) at a Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong, exceeding the $32.4 million paid for a Qing double-gourd vase in 2010. ($1 = 7.7550 Hong Kong Dollars)

i Granot It's valuable because of *who* painted it, not because of *what* the painting looks like. So yes, anyone can paint something as good or better, it's just not worth anything because you're a nobody.

sogghartha Not quite true. Artists do not sell on reputation alone. They gain reputation via recognizable accomplishment also. Just because someone can move a brush, manipulate a media, does not mean they understand space, have a solid thought about subject matter, or be able to convey motivation behind the work. Artists arising ex nihlo still have to hit a vibe with patrons willing to indulge a piece of work. Work might have the simple genius of being a right piece at a right time hence connecting with an aspect of societal zeitgeist. It is akin to an unknown, unexpected writer emerging from no source of past credit. The work still must stand.

i Granot Art is something beautiful and when it comes to painted artwork it has to be beautiful and difficult to make. I am not a painter but i can paint that, much like you can. You and i can not paint Mona Lisa because it's complex and beautiful thus making it. Art.

Define beautiful. Your definition will be lacking. Also, you've much to learn about art history and the definition of art. Arguing that art has to be held as beautiful by the common notion of beauty as you seem to imply it is a logical error called an appeal to popularity flaw. Such an argument would be exposed as having no merit in any logical discussions. Appealing to emotion also doesn't help the case. Is Pablo Picasso's Guernica outwardly beautiful by your standard? Is it complex? Ever hear of Minimalism? Ever consider the nature of the abstract? Do you understand why the 1800s led to a rebellion against Classical notions? How about iconography of medieval art? Is that beautiful? Is it complex? Neolithic cave paintings? You might want to read a couple books and attend a few classes in the future on the subject before formulating an opinion in public claiming to understand a subject even the wisest of people spend their lives trying to apprehend. ...or you can stay your current course of I Like Dogs Playing Poker criticism.
