How do u sail in one canoe alone

That I have never done myself, and if I haven’t done it multiple times…with paying guests and know it works, you won’t see it on 3 minutes. BUT there are some really cool, fast deploying kayak sails for sale on Amazon. The Advanced Elements Rapid Up looks like the easiest to rig to a canoe because of the shape of it. BUT I’ve never used it. If you want to rig one with what you have or can find in the Wild, Ray Goodwin has a really nice KZbin video on that. He shows the rigging and then sails it solo. Ray has a lot of good things on his channel. He’s another old dude been doing it a while. Here’s what I would look for in any sailing setup. Making a fully loaded canoe sail, is like making a tractor trailer sail, make sure if you need to you can drop that sail. Especially if you’re solo and don’t have the stability of rafting up, plus If a rapid is coming up. The new ones that just pop up seem easily to do that. There is no greater feeling than sailing a canoe, you always feel like you’ve gotten away with something. It’s like a wilderness heist. You took the wind and did nothing. Interesting, but... canoe flip....box gone... It's much better to have a dry bag. Here in Canada we never use a box like that. We use dry bags that are also backpacks. Much better: things always stay dry, and if you flip your bag will float instead of being at the bottom of the river. As for the water filter, I'm surprised that people are still using that very old one. I used to have an MSR micro-works for a long time but switched to the Sawyer squeeze since then. Something essential, in my opinion, is to have two long road flares. You can use them for signaling or to light an emergency fire lightning fast if needed.

If I dump the canoe that box is never gone. It clips into the bow and the gunwales of the canoe are over the sides of the box. Instant message me and I’ll send you a picture. Better yet maybe I’ll put that in an episode.

Long story short when it clips in it’s literally a part of the canoe like the seats or portage yoke.

In defense of the wannigan: a well built wooden box with a gasket will float, at least long enough to allow recovery. You wouldn't want to put your sleeping bag in it, but it works great for the hard-edged gear and items that can tolerate a few drips.

@@Mainepolingguide It would be nice, indeed, to show that so people wanting to do the same knows how. The problems with that box are: - canoe sink.... box and everything gone - box = more weight - box = not so much waterproof A waterproof backpack will float, is lighter, and is much easier to transport during portages. BUT... that box is way cooler than any backpack and more "bushcraft" as well. It's the classical dilemma where there's always a trade-off in the outdoors! I may even build one but if so, only be used for lakes and during very calm waters, and no portages. It's perfect for a sunny day out!

I am also Canadian, I like watching this channel as the canoe culture is quite different and interesting. I don’t see myself carrying a lot of the gear the Maine canoeists seem to use but I think it’s a conditioning due to very different geography, topography, geology.etc.
