My favorite recent (well, recently watched) sequel was Terminator 2. The way they upped the stakes with the new terminator "technology" that made it even more unkillable, the incredibly well-done plot twist with the two terminators, the way it expanded on the terminator idea from a social standpoint (the boy bonding with the terminator, the mother's reluctance to accept his help because of trauma). All this while keeping what made the first film great: kickass action sequences and chilling scenes of terminators being terminators. Tbh I play a lot more video games than watch movies so I know of more good sequels in that category: Unravel 2, The Talos Principle 2, Portal 2, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Psychonauts 2, Little Nightmares 2... maybe I should make a "Good video game sequels vs. bad sequels" video...

When you get an unexpected hit like the first Joker movie, there's a strong temptation to go back to the well, especially when creatively bankrupt studios are desperate for money. The problem however with an unexpected hit, or any sort of lightning in a bottle, is that if you can't understand what made the first one a hit, you're not going to be able to replicate it, and clearly they failed to here.
@CabezasDePescado2 ай бұрын
The director clearly made it out of spite but it was a childish and petty reaction, they had many drections to go and full control, no excuse for making a bad movie even if it a sequel was not needed

It’s a soulless money grab, let’s be honest
@forresth.66902 ай бұрын
They didn't try to replicate the accident, they doubled down on their intentions. The original film wasn't a Joker origin story, it was about what happens when the bones of a Joker origin story are fleshed out in something along the lines of the real world, i.e. everyone loses. Unfortunately, Todd Phillips failed to make the point; so many people thought "Joker won!" that the result was an empowerment-based blockbuster instead of the mild-to-moderate cinematic success he was aiming for.
@SpartacusSPQ2 ай бұрын
They did not replicate, they went even further. Just not in the direction of glorification. The tragedy is immense, and so painful they hide it behind the costume of a musical and put on the happy face. But behind the mask is something so broken you don’t want to see it. Arthur is reality. Joker is not. No matter how much we’d want that.

I'll never forget how hard my heart was beating while watching the scene where Arthur kills Murray in the first movie. The music in the background was giving me chills, Arthur was getting more and more angry while Murray and the audience kept making fun of him and Arthur's behaviour was getting more and more unhinged until that point. When he was talking in that scene you could see the pain in his eyes after everything that happened to him before this moment and then his anger as he's yelling at Murray and killing him in front of the live audience and cameras. That was a really great moment, my favourite, and it's what made the movie good. And so I was sitting there watching the sequel and waiting for the sequel to give me a scene that's like that but it didn't. And it couldn't either because a scene like that was accomplished by everything that came before, all that building up paid off - the story was going somewhere. But of course, the sequel just doesn't give us any story, there is no build up, nothing. Arthur is just, as you said in the video (great video btw), waiting for things to happen and that's it. There is no climax because nothing lead to any climax.
@WriterBrandonMcNulty2 ай бұрын
Yep, first Joker had some fantastic suspense to it. The subway and Murray scenes are standouts.
@mimilook43472 ай бұрын
@@WriterBrandonMcNulty Yes! Thank you so much for replying. I love your videos 😄. I forgot to mention the subway scene, cuz we also see him kill other people in the movie too before the Murray scene, so it was obvious that he's going to kill him and when he said "I got nothing to lose" I knew he's going to do something crazy again. And the subway scene kinda terrified me the first time I watched it, it was really great too. He killed his mom as well, and his colleague, he decided to get back at everyone who was humiliating him, so we were expecting him to finally become the Joker, which we came for. They promised something and they delivered. His villain arc being so strong is the reason why the second movie fails - there's no way that a violent man with mental illness can be cured from all his trauma with the power of love. Mental illness doesn't work like that. It's like nothing from the first movie that happened never happened and he was never crazy.

I thought the movie made it clear enough (opening scene to the end) that the stakes in this movie were Joker versus Arthur Fleck. Additionally, Fleck is being manipulated constantly by everyone in the movie. I think you missed the point were Arthur Fleck ultimately defeats the Joker during the final court scene by claiming he is of one sane mind & personality when he wasn't. He takes agency in doing this. He takes agency by leaving the taxi. Fleck is manipulated by his mother, the prison guards, Harley, other Joker fans, the media, etc. Fleck struggles & has agency versus his manipulators. I can understand fans expecting a film with more fantasy versus realism being disappointed.

As Arthur stated in the final scene from the first Joker film, when asked, " You want to tell me your Joke?"..... Arthur responds..... "You wouldn't get it." It's very obvious that the critics, let alone the general audience, didn't get Folie à Deux at all. It would appear that the audience, within 5 years, has become more narrow-minded, inept, and only wants what they feel they deserve... The sequel is a conclusion to Arthur's tortured life and not about the exploits of the Clown Prince of Crime. The film is about Arthur's real world and fantasy world experiences colliding. And eventually it's his adoring fans turned enemies on him that wind up killing him. Hence, Lady Gagas "Lee", Phillips interpretation of Harley Quinn. If you really feel it necessary to analyze her character, then you would see her as the secular form of chaotic crowd. The obsession turned hatred after Arthur says in court publicly, he's not Joker, he committed the crimes, he's not a dual personality, and so on. This turns out to be a reflection on you, the general audience, and especially the critics that simply did not want to understand the film nor give it a chance to tell its story from the first film. Much rather it's showing the inhumanity and the complete disconnect from a word that was used several times for the first film, empathy. Rather instead people were looking for a redefined murderous Clown Prince to take up the mantle before good old Heath Ledger would show up... For the comic historians, it should be known that the character has stated in several books that he's more of an idea, hence Arthur providing this idea, and dare I say inspiration for the future of the Joker that fanboys were searching for. Simply put, all I hear is hack critics and Fanboys whining that they didn't get what they wanted, boohoo. The dumbing down and heartlessness of today's society reflects in much of the negative critiques you're finding with this film, that's to be expected. What else do you expect from spoiled little brats that love dick and fart jokes... Speaking of Redundant frat boy Moronic comedy,, Marvel gives you Deadpool and Wolverine. As typical with the MCU, mindless bubblegum attempted roller coaster with an attempt of being semi-funny with lowbrow comedy and digging up characters from their Hall of want to be heroes. Let's put it this way, I highly doubt and I'm willing to put money down that Deadpool and Wolverine will see much of any awards being thrown their way, and there's a good reason for that, it's not really a film, it's a fanboy fest, and you see how limited their Horizons are. Folie à Deux will later resonate with people that can appreciate a film that is based on the characters from a comic book and bringing them into a tangible real life that is gritty ugly and in your face truthful. Even with the song and dance elements, what goes on in people's heads can be by far more disturbing. As for Wolverine and deadpool, or whatever it's called, its going to go along with the rest of the MCU films, chewed up, spit out, forgotten about, somewhat like a used condom when the fanboy is the only one in the room,, maybe a little cash in the pocket, but meaningless, lowbrow comedy easily forgotten about. 👏👏 Well done Todd, and thankx🃏

@Danielss250 the film has by far more depth than you or most people are giving it credit for. If the film is overly explained and one-dimensional, why are so many people upset that they didn't get what they wanted? For anyone to think that this was the origin story of the battle between the bat and the Clown is short-sighted, and obviously naive. I will say that the films undertone of the audience watching this film is that of a lack of any empathy, let alone the imagination to understand the character not being what they wanted but rather the idea of what the character will become. The death of Arthur Fleck literally gives birth to "The Joker". Pretentious? 🤣 Well, typically the one making that accusation is the one that didn't get their way, boohoo... I never claimed anything about my intelligence... however by your reaction I can only make the assumption that you're just like the rest of "them"... sad there's so many 🃏

You just made a dissertation and now this response where your main point is that the film is too good at subverting expectations and ppl are just mad that they don't understand it and didn't get what they were looking for. @Danielss250 Well, the film wasn't bad, nor was it a waste of money, and for people that didn't get it, that's their problem. You can read into my commentary however you want, and if it appears to you that I'm being pretentious and enlightened, that's fine. It's not my problem that the IQ level, specifically in the United States, is lowered so far in 2024. As far as empathy, I don't think that I'm being unempathetic to a bunch of whiny ass Fanboys that are throwing Tantrums because they didn't get what they wanted. Too bad. Apart of the reaction comes from the many that are slamming the film without even seeing it, let alone the critics not understanding it whatsoever, and then trying to rip into people that did understand it, or appreciate it. You mentioned "frustrations".. 🤣 .. why? Because THEY didn't get want they wanted? Well, what they wanted wasn't possible in the storyline of this film. Common sense? To expect otherwise is naive. So empathy should apply to whining, able-bodied adults, that throw insults at others who don't agree with their narrow-minded views of how they see the world... that's all I need to know from you. At least you didn't use the "Bro" response. You don't need to be taught anything. THEY will give you that.

When he fell in love with Harley I though ok now he’s going to start hatching a plan, especially with her on the outside, but nope. When the bomb went off in the court room I thought awesome are we going to find out that joker had secretly been planning this with Harley and his following? Nope just random thing that happened. I guess he decided he wasn’t the joker? Pretty lame

See, I feel like a lot of people conflate the LotR movies as the Hobbit’s source material, when the source material is obviously the book, the Hobbit. And the movies are a pretty good adaptation of the book. While I think any fans of Tolkien’s can agree that making a trilogy out of the Hobbit was never going to work, and yes, the writing and visuals are noticeably worse than those of LotR, I think the meat of a lot of people’s complaints is that it’s sillier than LotR, when so is the book. It’s a CHILDREN’S STORY, not an epic fantasy, and I personally think the Hobbit movies are good in their own right, although obviously even the best of the trilogy isn’t nearly as good as the worst of the LotR trilogy.

Unlike most people, I have actually experienced folie à deux with a dangerously violent romantic partner who tried to manipulate me into being violent. I experienced childhood and adult abuse. I lived below the federal poverty level because for 30 years the VA misdiagnosed my PTSD and Bipolar disorder. For 20 years I was prescribed various REPEATED combinations of 10 different antidepressants and augments, which made my Bipolar disorder worse. Due to poverty, I had to live with one of my childhood abusers for a decade. People avoid me when I become hypomanic and talk too quickly or divulge too much personal information. I had a girlfriend hire someone to kill me when I broke up with her. Thanks to that, I've been a hermit and an involuntary celibate for decades because I have panic attacks around women. So here's what you missed because you DID NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE FIRST FILM: 1. The first film was intended to be a realistic character study about characters in the DC Universe. The origins and motivations of each character needed to be realistic. This means realistic psychology. You can not realistically get Batman's Joker without him being inspired by a proto-Joker. The types of trauma Arthur experienced were too debilitating, and would NEVER have created someone equal to Batman. 2. Both films are a horror story for Arthur. Joker did such a good job of making you empathize with Arthur that you were cheering as he killed people. BUT THERE WAS NOTHING TO CHEER ABOUT. Getting revenge on the people who brutalized you is NOTHING TO CHEER ABOUT. Granted, Arthur was certainly justified in killing the first stock broker in self defense. But not the second. And CERTAINLY not the third. There was no self-defense in killing his mother. There was no self-defense in killing Murray. 3. Musical elements: Have you ever watched a musical? Do you know the purpose of musical numbers? They don't exist just to pad the runtime. They are put into films because they are the ONLY viable way to make the audience understand complex internal emotional states. You can't show the audience the experience of folie à deux using voiceovers. I KNOW, because I experienced it. The first film did a very good job of showing the audience what Arthur's internal emotional state was. But how do you think a film can show the audience a shared delusional state between TWO PEOPLE? Voiceovers? So, let's pick out some points in your video: 0:38 If you wanted a repeat of the first film, you should have just re-watched the first film. The whole point of a sequel is to continue the story, not repeat it. You had already developed sympathy for Arthur in the first film. 1:19 You used the words "sympathy" and "empathy". I don't think those words mean what you think they mean. "Sympathy" is feeling concern or sorrow for someone. "Empathy" is sharing in that person's feelings and perspective. If you think that "sympathy" is more powerful, and that the films intended you to feel "sympathy", then its no wonder you believe that the sequel sucked. You were supposed to see the world through Arthur's perspective. This is ALSO why you failed to understand the message behind both films: almost everyone in Gotham is a victim AND a villain. It is a vicious cycle. When you treat someone badly, they treat you badly, which only gives you an excuse to treat them worse, and then they treat you worse, and so on. Every single shot in the first film is pounding that into your head. It is VERY obvious if you pay close attention to the radio and tv broadcasts. 1:54 "...relatively nice to him." Are you kidding me? What were you doing? Texting on your phone? Every single interaction with the prison guards involve threats, implied threats, abuse, or allusions to off-screen abuse. Did you NOT notice Arthur squatting in the rain instead of sitting down in the bleachers? When Lee came to see Arthur in his cell, did you NOT understand HOW she got there? As someone who has spent time in a psych ward, the little things can be just as painful as the big things. In this day and age, imagine being denied your phone simply because you're ill. Now, imagine being denied your phone when the nurses are sitting around passing the time on their phones watching Netflix. This is COMMON is psych wards. 2:05 If all you felt was sympathy for Arthur in the first film, then its no wonder you had no emotional connection to him in the sequel. 2:15 Were you paying attention to that "tame uneventful intro sequence"? Were you listening to the radio? Did you pay attention to what Arthur was doing? HE WAS TRYING TO PERFECT HIS APPEARANCE SO THAT THE COURT AND JURY WOULD LIKE HIM. HE WAS PUTTING ON A MASK!!! 2:35 I would love to hear a rational explanation for why the threat of the death penalty IS NOT a stake. 2:42 Things at stake in the sequel: (a) Arthur's identity, which he finally comes to terms with when he admits that he is the Joker and he did kill those people, (b) Arthur's mental health while under the influence of Lee, (c) Arthur's physical safety while in the prison, (d) Arthur's emotional needs in his relationship with Lee, (e) Arthur's moral compass when he admits that he killed those people, (f) A freaking trial where the death penalty is on the table is ABSOLUTELY relevant to the safety of the supporting characters and society as a whole. God, this isn't rocket science. Why not just admit that you went into the film biased, and came out biased. 3:02 Did you notice that you just said "In a sequel, we TYPICALLY want to raise the stakes." Do you not know what the word "typically" means? I'll give you a hint: IT DOES NOT MEAN "ALL THE TIME". 3:22 Every second of Arthur's interactions with Lee are EXACTLY WHAT FOLIE à DEUX FEELS LIKE. You did go look up what folie à deux was, right? You didn't just assume it was a hoity-toity way of saying "part 2". Right? 3:47 Do I need to point out that "failing to see a compelling drama" is often the result of NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE FILM? The end of the first film had Arthur breaking. The end of the sequel has Arthur putting himself back together and being at peace. I fail to see how that is a repeat of the first film. 4:00 Do you know how much agency a prisoner has? Do you know how much agency a psych ward patient has. Do you know how much agency a man who is experiencing folie à deux with a manipulative woman has? Folie à deux is a break with reality. How much agency does a delusional person have? 5:14 Back to an earlier point: THIS IS NOT BATMAN'S JOKER. This is proto-Joker. At what point in the first film did Arthur show himself to be a mastermind? You went in to that film with expectations. When a film fails to meet your expectations, IT IS NOT THE FAULT OF THE FILM. It is your own fault for not leaving your expectations at the door.

Independence Day: Resurgence. In the first movie, after the president was attacked by the alien's telepathy and he was briefly connected to the alien hive-mind, he mentioned that they bring their whole civilization each time they invade a planet, so it's implied they were all exterminated for good when the mothership exploded. But alas, Fox wanted Part 2 and they commited some of the worst sins a sequel can have: 1) Killing off a main character off-screen because the actor was unable to return. 2) Contradicting what was established in the world they built. 3) Telling pretty much the same story, and with the aforementioned elements, being ultimately an inferior version of it.

I also hated the ending where like it's just some random guy that kills Arthur. And then we find out Arthur wasn't even the Joker but just inspired the psycho that stabbed him. And then like you, see the guy that stabbed him like carved the Joker smile on his face. Implying he's Heath Ledger Joker. I mean if they were going to do that they should have gave the guy who killed him some screen time. And it makes sense that this Joker isn't the Joker because like Bruce Wayne would just be a little kid at this point. But I didn't like the idea of watching a movie about the guy who inspired the Joker. They should have made Arthur the Joker but just in a universe we're Batman doesn't exist. Or where he's not mentioned so it could like make sense later.

I’m gonna be completely honest. Idk how people couldn’t tell he wasn’t the real joker even in the first movie considering Bruce was a little child while Arthur was a middle aged man. It seemed pretty clear to me even in that film that the intention was Arthur could be perceived as just the inspiration for the “actual” joker.

Additionally, the Waynes' murder in the first Joker contradicts the depiction of this scene in Batman Begins. Finally, Harvey Dent is already assistant DA in Joker 2 and is also (technically) disfigured. Given that Joker and Joker 2 are both set in the early 80's (judging by movie posters in Joker 1), Dent's age in Joker 2 also doesn't align with his age in TDK (which was set in 2008). They set up a world with dinosaurs everywhere on the island and do all these commercials about how they can come up in drive-in theatres and backyards but it instead focuses on the locust crisis and isolates itself to BioSyn vallley instead of exploring the worldwide dinosaur crisis. A lot of the action scenes feel like they are from a James Bond movie where dinosaurs have been squeezed in. The dinosaur sequences lacked genuine surprise and tension. However, I think it is decent and over-hated. Those scenes of the JP and JW cast interacting with each other are great, Jeff Goldblum has a lot of good jokes and there are a lot of emotional moments with Maisie. Its a 7/10 for me.

I think it's weird to call all of these "failures" when, to me at least, these were all conscious choices. I think the point of this movie is to directly attack the image of Joker at the end of the first one and interrogate the audience for being seduced by that Joker. The bad guy in Joker two is the people who liked Joker one and part of that punchline is showing just how unsympathetic Fleck is. Sure, bad things happened to him, but bad things happened to everyone in these films and most of them didn't turn homicidal. I think the joke is on us, and that's a super valuable thing for art to do. Most of the criticism I keep seeing is something like "people liked the first one and didn't like the second" but that's not the definition of good art. At the end of Joker, Arthur Fleck didn't deserve sympathy and Joker 2 showed that and it showed it well, forcing the audience to stew in the fact that he deserved help (help he didn't ever really get) but not sympathy. Calling it a writing failure is like calling a Picasso a failure because the proportions are wrong

Full disclosure: I'm writing this before having seen the video. However, I _did_ see _Joker: Follie a Deux._ Didn't hate it, but also didn't love it. Many people are saying that the decision to make it a semi-musical was the problem. I disagree, though the music still was the problem. How can that be? Because the film suffers from the fatal mistake that a lot of sub-par musicals make. Namely, the songs did nothing to push the story forward. In a good musical, if you were to skip past the musical numbers, you wouldn't know what was going on, because the content of the music directly pertains to the plot, or some key character trait. In bad musicals, the plot stops dead in its tracks, to make way for musical numbers that add little or nothing to either the plot, or characters. As a result, you could skip past all the music and still get what's going on. This was the case with _Joker: Follie a Deux._ The decision to make it a musical actually makes sense, considering the characters at play here, but in order for us to not be taken out of the action, the music must provide something other than atmosphere, and in this case, atmosphere was about all the songs did provide. And after the first six, even the atmosphere was becoming stifling. The truly frustrating part of all of this, was that there actually was a good movie hiding in there, and almost no one had the patience to make it to the end, because every five minutes, the story would screech to a halt, so we could get another scratchy-voiced duet. This is not even close to the worst movie released this year, however I do understand why it may wind up being the biggest disappointment.
