3 Mistakes to Avoid When Applying to Med School

How much/will a masters degree aid in gaining an interview? I came out of the military and was sick. It was my dream to be a doctor but I joined when the war broke out and came out with chronic and frequent respiratory infections. For a period of a few years I was in and out of the hospital and my grades reflected it. I took a couple years off to gain control of my health, came back and gained a 3.8 undergraduate degree and 3.75 as a graduate student. What are the chances my poor academic performance in the past will come back to bite me/can the gap year help, and how much would the decision to gain a masters degree help me against students who are younger without all of the baggage? Thank you!
