In this video we take a look at the 41 David Austin bare-roots that I received and planted this spring to see how they are doing and to measure their size.
Keep in mind that the performance you see is in my environment which includes high humidity, high wind and a high water table. The river salinity is high and our soil contains a significant amount of clay, although I usually add top soil and gypsum.

I can’t sleep and the wind is howling outside so I’m watching this to get my mind off the fact we are heading into single digit temperatures! 🥶🌹

I got a few David Austin's this year. Two budded up and flushed out almost immediately. One took a month and the last one just started showing growth today (almost two months!) I was worried that the last two were dying because I couldn't see any growth at all. Only because the woody part was still showing green, did I keep it in and hoped and prayed over them. So don't give up too quickly!

I love that Jude the Obscure rose! I ordered and received one but sadly he and one of my Lady Emma Hamilton’s didn’t make it. Probably due to a surprise winter storm that rolled through here after those two started waking up in April. David Austin was out of both but they’ll be shipping replacements next year. I can’t wait because the Lady Emma I had that survived took a while to wake up but she put on an amazing show last week. I had neighbors stopping by asking me “what’s that rose?” while I was outside working in the garden.

I planted many of them this spring and I am seeing lots of them are getting die back stems. What should I do to save them in zone 5. Any suggestions please?
@TheRoseGeek
@TheRoseGeek 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gardening mindset. I saw a lot of die back on mine also this year. All you can do is watch them closely and trim back where you can avoiding going into the crown. You can watch this video and let me know if it helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2GudZ2GeK-sg7s If you have any other questions, don't be afraid to reach out.

Curious to know how deep you planted the bare root roses. According to David Austin (video) the crown should be at 2 inches below surface soil level, but all your roses seem to have their crown above the surface? Is this intentional or why is the rose planted with the crown above ground?
@TheRoseGeek
@TheRoseGeek 7 ай бұрын
You have a good eye. I keep the crown just at, or above the soil in zone 8 for grafted roses so that I can watch for suckers from beneath the crown. Dr. Huey tends to sucker and perform poorly for us with our high water table. You may find that those in zone 6 (and colder zones) plant the crown 2" deep due to very cold winters.

@@TheRoseGeek thanks for your reply. I live in the Middle East, where it is very hot and extremely humid. I have noticed that the roses planted 2" below surface are far healthier, grow bushier and have stronger canes as compared to those I mistakenly planted with the crown above the surface.

❤love your roses😊My Evelyn is flowering soon😊Do u know an organic way to control Black spot? As tropical Malaysia's monsoons are crazy & humid😢? Thank you.

Thank you! I remove all affected leaves and spray the canes with Horticultural oil. Another thing to try, that I haven't yet, is a cup of Corn Meal sprinkled at the base of the rose. I have heard that this will help.

I saw on KZbin that orchid growers sprayed garlic juice & cinnamon powder to the leaves & blackish roots...it works! I am waiting for the wet & flooding Northeast Monsoon to try that ...hihiui.. I.e next November. My other 5 roses will be arriving by then, namely Albrighton rambler , Nahema , As Good as Gold , Rouge Royale & the rare, Ecuadorian hybrid tea, 3D :)
