one of the things that terrifies me most about a lot of the near-miss stories is how often people say that they never told anyone. Usually for feelings of shame (absolutely misplaced shame) or fear of having done wrong (because when something wrong happens to us we wanna think there’s a reason, that it was avoidable) which just makes it SO much sadder.

I feel like any kid who has a tendency to stray from the group should listen to the first story so that they're scared into sticking with the group on field trips. As harsh as that sounds, it's safer in the long run to make them scared into not breaking the rules. I remember growing up and my parents telling me to never open the door to any stranger on any condition, not even the mailman, nor even respond or say anything out loud if the doorbell rang so as to indicate that I was in the house alone. I was told that if any stranger outside found out I was alone in the house, that person would report me to the cops and I'd be taken away. As a kid I believed it so I obeyed their rule like it was law-- now that I'm an adult I know it was obviously a lie, but I understand the rationalizing behind their rule: make sure no stranger aware I was in the house alone. Kids until a certain age don't understand the concept behind kidnapping.

Story 1 was such an emotional roller coaster… I’m so happy they were able to escape unscathed for the most part but you ABSOLUTELY have to tell! The adults would be more relieved they’re okay than getting in trouble. Also, a description would help for staffers to keep an eye out in case he tried it again and insure others are on heightened alert for suspicious individuals.

Here's a short one that really happened to me: We went to NYC in grade 9. Before going to Madame Tussaud's wax museum, they allowed us to walk around NYC by ourselves, unsupervised and shop for 2 hours. My friends and I (like 5 girls) were crossing the street to get to the museum when we notice one of our teacher's starting at us with a concerned look on his face. We're thinking "oh shit we're late we're going to get in trouble" so we run over to where our teacher is. He does a quick head count and then abruptly shoves us past the line of the rest of our classmates and into the museum. Once inside, he tell us that he was watching us go into stores across the street and noticed a man was following us into and out of every store. He started to get closer and closer to us and would look away when we looked in his direction. As we walked towards our teacher the man was apparently so close to us that he was literally up against my friend as we were waiting to cross the street. When he saw our teacher calling for us, the man ran away.

I went on a field trip to Ottawa once and one of the guides one day told the class that ghosts prefer corners and that’s why they built the museum with no corners. All the walls are rounded. The next day I had gotten a shock pen and I shocked myself with it to see how strong it was. I threw it 😂 it went behind the chair in the corner of the hotel room and I instantly got up to get it. It was no longer behind the chair. While I was looking for it one of the girls I was sharing the room with was like ‘uhhhh angel?’ And I looked at her and she was pointing at the bed. I WATCHED this pen fly behind the chair across the room. I instantly went to pick it up so I didn’t forget it when we went home. And somehow it teleported back to the bed. I definitely would have seen if someone went and grabbed it while I was on my way over to it so I wholeheartedly believe it was a ghost. (I have a lot of other experiences in houses that I’ve lived in. They follow me 😬)

here's mine: when I was 17, I signed up to be a counselor for my district's elementary school field trip (it was originally a camping trip, but covid; so we just went to the grounds for 3 days) and got a group of 8 kids all diagnosed with ADHD. My co-counselor was also absent for 2/3 days bc of a family emergency and none of the teachers were willing to listen/help me when one of the kids kept making the others cry. I legitimately broke down to my mom on the last day saying I was really reconsidering whether I wanted kids in the future or not.
