GST is a socially regressive tax...hurts the poorer 20% much harder because basic food stuff comprise a larger percentage of his/her income than for the top 20% where basic food stuff is a very small, insignificant percentage. GST should apply to fine dine restaurants, wines and other luxury consumption. Never basic foodstuff and medical. On the issue of immigration, I think it's not realistic to expect more than, say 50%, of our naturalised citizens to feel a little bit of loyalty to Singapore. I know a few of them, not many, and this is true for this small sample population of immigrants. E.g. a colleague of mine who already has his Singapore citizenship still intros himself as a (insert country) man living in Singapore, clearly he does not think he is Singaporean. He says his children are born in singapore, but just couldn't bring himself to say that they are Singaporean, as if it is a source of regret for him. Another one told me that she is just using the Singapore citizenship as a springboard to further her career and does not see herself staying here long term. I'm only saying what I have observed personally. But while they, the 1st gen immigrants don't believe themselves to be one of us, their children who grow up here are much more likely to. A few of my neighbours are immigrants, when their kids speak in the mother tongue, the foreign accent is there, but when the kids speak English, they sound perfectly Singaporean. They play with friends of other ethnicities just like our kids do. The children of these 1st-gen immigrants are Singaporean.

When a govt increases the supply of its national currency, the govt actually transfers the purchasing value of the currency in our pockets and bank savings to the govt to spend. This is considered a hidden tax. The increase of currency supply devalues the currency, as a result, the people need to earn more to buy the same car, house, or any other things. That is why people complained about nowadays $50 buys fewer things? Every time a govt wants to spend, it would print more currency, every time there is a recession, it prints more currency to stimulate the economy, this is an ongoing process. This is a bubble economy, and all bubble economy is sure to burst, it's not if but when.

Yes minister...Gst is a consumption tax... that is a regressive tax. U give GST rebate but as a whole u take in more than u pay out. It hits the lower income more too.
@Niiflux4 жыл бұрын
GST applies to everyone, be in lower or upper. We could have just stayed at 5% GST and get no rebates at all. However, the goal why a country would prefer to tax higher GST and give rebates retrospectively is to tax the one group which doesn't pay any other tax than GST. That is the tourist. Everytime the tourist spends a dollar in singapore, that's where we make money. Just because we want to tax tourist and probably also pass holders, the rebate scheme is the best choice to increase revenue without impacting local citizens. Don't you think it would be wiser this way?
@Bobbylim3234 жыл бұрын
@@Niiflux you can tailor consumption taxes to hit higher income individuals harder. I honestly think that essentials should be tax exempt so that low-income families have a higher purchasing power
@jeffersonneo4644 жыл бұрын
@@Bobbylim323 and how tf are you going to implement that? Higher income people already have to pay highing income tax. GST, will be for EVERYONE regardless of their status, to make it equal. You can't just keep taxing rich people cuz 'oh they're rich'. If families are unable to cope with the gst, then they can apply for COUNTLESS of subsidy schemes to assist them, ranging from healthcare to daily needs.
@Niiflux4 жыл бұрын
@Hitler is actually a cat sorry to burst your bubble but the rich is already being taxed more on luxury goods. For example, expensive sports cars have a different tax range and luxury vices such as alcohol and cigarettes are taxed higher than other goods. Moreover the income from the rich is progressive taxed more that the poor, notably we only pay close to 2-3% income tax while the rich pay nearly 22% If you noticed by now, essential necessities are taxed at the basic levels sometimes tax free as well, but items such as chocolate or luxury goods are taxed even before they come into the country. Back to the point again, we are taxing tourist more than we tax our own people. And we are taxing the rich way more than the poor. But in the society we live in, the poor is always pushing blame away and yet too uneducated to know what’s the really happening. Democracy only works when the people are educated enough to vote properly. sad to say, not many people know how to vote on the issues, but simplistically vote on one sided information they get. As socrates once quote, democracy has a flaw that vote by the people is bound to fail. Especially when most people are not adequately educated on the subject matter to make the right judgement. Worst thing is, the people always believe they know enough and know better.

This is where Finance Minister Heng is wrong. 1. Tourists pay significantly lesser GST or zero GST altogether with the spending cap set at a low threshold of $100 spending. It is untrue that tourists pay GST unless they are super broke which is really highly unlikely to be the case given that they have already set foot in SG. Why not, Mr Heng, instead of raising the GST to 9% on ordinary Singaporeans, raise the threshold for GST refund on tourists? You can argue that it would inhibit tourist spending, but as a matter of fact, when I go to foreign countries, people there are saying that they would prefer to go to KL as it is cheaper. If you set the threshold for GST refund to maybe between $2000-$5000 of spending while lowering the GST to 5%, wouldn't that continue tourist spending while reducing the need for an increase in GST to 9% without accumulating much shortfall? 2. On the elected presidency - how can you guarantee President Halimah's ability to safeguard the reserves where there is a clear conflict of interest in her role? Firstly, the gap between her resignation from the PAP and her taking up the elected presidency is only 1.5 months. Secondly, the PAP government went out of the way to change the rules to ensure that Halimah and Halimah only could become the president. Case in point - the shareholder's equity rule was increased to $500,000 and Chan Chun Sing said that the rule would be enforced strictly vs the "flexibility" exercised in 2011. Also, the speaker of parliament handles a budget that is way smaller than the budget of an average government ministry, agency or stat board. In fact, her other prospective opponents, such as Farid Khan, handled a much bigger budget that Halimah in her time as Speaker. The Speaker of parliament in Singapore also does not engage in any policy making decision or role unlike the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the US. Yet the Speaker clause for automatic qualification for the elected president wasn't repealed or removed, so that Halimah only could qualify as president. If you truly care about transparency and guarding the reserves, why not let Dr Tan Cheng Bock or Farid Khan run against Halimah and let the public decide who is the best candidate for this role? Also, can you guarantee that a president in Halimah Yacob, who was elevated to the top office through the out-of-the-way changes to the rules by your PAP government, can truly play her role in safeguarding our reserves and the integrity of our public service, without fear or favour, when because of the out-of-the-rule changes she will always have an element of beholdenness to your PAP government?

HSK has raised a point, that many Singaporeans conveniently forget. 35-40% of people living in Singapore are not citizens, yet they pay taxes at the same rate as Singaporeans. They (with the exception of PRs, but ONLY to a degree) do not benefit from subsidised public goofd such as housing, healthcare and education. If Singapore were to have a local:foreign mix similar to say, the average Western country, the ratio would be 90:10, rather than the current 65:35. This would mean that tax rates would have to go up to support the same level of subsidy to Singaporeans.

You are right. It's not easy. But your role as a Minister of Finance need to tweak policies that help to reduce income gap between the bottom 10 and top 10 percentile. And many other. They put themselves in this role and are paid handsomely for performing. Positive outcome is expected for such high salary they command.
@trafficmonsoonacademy5624 жыл бұрын
My friend. People are aware that leadership roles in govt may not be easy. However, they have lost touch with the challenges of the low/middle income group. And think abt it - how can they(govt) relate to our financial challenges when their salary is sky high. They can say they "understand us". Words are cheap. However they can never empathise with us... simply because they are being shielded financially. Too much. Everything is provided for them. Which ministers salary is like the common man? Which of them stay in HDB? In all honesty, when I see rising MPs and ministers, all i see is a grp that just wants to be seen that they are the man for the job. To have real concern for the under privillege is secondary and something they have to do. It shows their character when they only come knocking at my door during GE. This behaviour is disgusting to say the least. The people are also disgusted with their wayang and censorship of criticism.

History will repeat itself with these new migrants' choice to be Singapore Citizens. Today, those old migrants who came here many years ago are helpless financially towards their twilight years. I don't have concerns about giving citizenships to foreigner because I believe this will be resolved in time (when I do not know but it is in the future). These new citizens are very smart ppl (also a result of our strict criteria that only admit the best and brightest) and definitely on many levels smarter (not just intellectually but also street smart) than some stupid SGian. And they coming from a worst-off (else why do they choose to emigrate from their country?) system in their original country knows the risks of 'certain' system. Out of their self-interest and children interest, they know better than many stupid SGian what type of system serve them best (aka not jumping out of the pot which is their origin country into the fire which is SG their new home) because they have experienced and gone through the pain. They know what to choose and that I believe will also serve SGian well. When someone realized that having too many smart ppl in the country may not be a good thing (for them), they will ... lol ... and hopefully it is not too late for them. If they are not smart enough to have the foresight, shooting themselves in their foot is probably well-deserved.

Singapore has given 'PR' to many nations but the real problem is with the China's PR. i witness this awkward situation when these China's PR wanting to visit Malaysia begin to converse these Malaysian Immigration Officier in 'Mandarin'. Much annoyance. Any nationalities of any countries with converse in simple English. In Singapore, the worst situation is these China's PR talking to an Indian man and a Malay lady wearing a scarf(tudung) in Mandarin. You donot see other PR of any countries doing something 'weird'. So, have a careful thought of not upsetting the social cohesion for a better Singapore. If, really we want to have a 'Majulah Singapura'.

I dun think the GST implemented would benefit the lower income group if the rate is one across the board. If you really wanna help the lower income ppl, you should implement tiered GST. Obviously a much lower GST for essential non branded goods like flour, rice, milk powder, medicine (from pharmacy), sugar, etc. And, another much higher rate for luxury goods.
@noobplayer1234 жыл бұрын
Nah middle and high income would tend to spend more because of higher purchasing power. If there is tier gst, restaurant and shop, company would suffer from it. Another would be it is difficult to justify a tier and how much gst to allocate for each tier. A subtle approach will be applying to everyone and then give more subsidies to the poor
@philipchan18564 жыл бұрын
Marcus lim Do not agree with our perspective. Above middle income and the super rich will spend more on luxury goods, and lower to middle income will spend more on non branded essential goods. For instance, lower income will not buy a branded olive oil, sugar or milk powder vs those above middle income folks. Subsidize offered by government so far is only one time off and not enough to see them thru one year.
