Good times lol :) More testing should reveal why it makes so much noise.

I just realised I could've recorded our antics on the power analyser and graphed it afterwards, never mind :)

That's one hell of a variac! I bet it'll be a swine for tripping the breaker on power-up though, even my 15 amp one does that. Could be worth putting a ballast inline with it, with a bypass switch (start with the ballast to limit the inrush, then short out the ballast and run at full power). Of course I know sod all about ballasting and just soft-start mine with a mains conditioner, but I assume that would work?

Great score the windings are in very good condition. The other parts you will be able to sort out without too much problems.

1:30 Good show, no one can be serious about high power abuse without an angle grinder :)

The variac was made by staco energy and was not an auction item. Better luck next time:)

3x 25A variac?! Whaaaaaat?! O_o My goodness, I bet you had fun trying to get around the inrush on that! :-O Ah yes, if you can match that up to a 60-80A 1ph power source, wire the variacs in parallel, then I'm sure you can have some big-time poppage fun with that! Please be carful with it though, it would be a shame to pop it ( and mighty expensive to replace too! ) Yep, looking forward to you making a casing for this one. This variac needs a name. :-D Thanxx for showing, -BBD.
