MICHELLE THALLER: So, Oscar, you asked the question, "What are some of the easiest ways that you can prove that the Earth is round?" Because apparently, this is something that we're debating-I have no idea why.
That's a hard thing for me to even start talking about because there are so many proofs that the Earth is round, it's difficult to know where to start. And it's not okay to think that the Earth is flat. This is not a viable argument.
I have friends who have been on the International Space Station, they have orbited the Earth once every 90 minutes; I've had personal experience with people who have been up in space and can see with their own eyes that the Earth is round. And of course, we've taken all of these amazing pictures from space; they're so beautiful, all those pictures of the Earth.
So I don't really know what's going on right now with this 'Earth is flat' thing, but I will tell you that this is one of the things I really enjoyed teaching my own astronomy class about because there are proofs all around you. It is not difficult to know that the Earth is round. In fact, people have known of this for way more than 2,000 years. The ancient Greeks actually had a number of really elegant, wonderful proofs that the earth was a sphere.
So let's start from the simple to the slightly more complicated. One of the things you can see yourself, with a pair of binoculars, is if you actually go out to a lake and there are boats on that lake, the farther away a boat is the more the bottom of the boat will disappear, and you'll basically just see the mast of the boat. And as a boat goes farther and farther away the last thing you will see is the very top of the mast of that boat, and that's because the boat is actually going over the horizon that's curved-and that means that as it goes farther and farther away you see less and less of the bottom of it, and more of the top of that. You can see that with binoculars by an ocean, by a lake, it's really easy. That wouldn't happen if the Earth were flat-you would simply see the boat getting smaller and smaller and smaller as it went farther away, but you'd be able to see the whole thing with the same proportions.
Now, another way that you can tell that we're on a sphere is to think about how there's something called the tropics on the Earth, and the tropics are places near the equator of the earth were sometimes the sun is overhead in the sky. This was actually something that the Greeks used, not only to prove that the Earth was round about 2000 years ago, but they actually measured the circumference of the Earth, accurate to within just a couple percent. 2,000 years ago we've known that the Earth was round.
There was a really brilliant Greek scientist called Eratosthenes, and Eratosthenes noticed that there was a town called Syene, and on a certain date the sun would actually shine straight down to the bottom of a well. That mea...

I have watched a lot of flat earth videos and concluded where the flat earth idea comes from: 1. A lack of ability to grasp scale. Arguments like "i can see the horizon is straight" or "I don't feel like the earth is spinning, so it must be stationary", "i trust my senses". 2. Religious beliefs where humans are special and the earth was created for us. Interpretations of certain bible verses could lead one to think the earth is flat. A spec of insignificant dust on a cosmic scale is not compatible with some of these religious beliefs. 3. A strong belief in global conspiracies and most of all a distrust of anything to do with NASA. 4. A lack of knowledge about physics.

If you rewatch the video you are talking about, Don Pettit talks about how we don't have a large rocket or shuttle like Saturn V, capable of taking people to the moon NOW, and how they are working on a new 21st century solution called Orion. @@dominiccharvet546 You seem to have a very wrong understanding of basic physics, as is often the case with Flat Earthers: There's a difference between rotation speed (it takes almost 24 HOURS. *_HOURS..._* to complete a full 360° spin. This means that there is barely any centrifugal force.) and movement speed (which has been observed to be relative: a ball thrown up in eg. a train seems to go up and down in the train, but when watched from outside the train it makes a large arc. You can jump in a moving train (as long as it's going in a straight line and at a constant speed) and feel no effect from the large speed at all.). If you want to prove me wrong on that front: please do the research into the formulas, test them if you want to be sure they're correct, however, I'm sure you're smart enough to understand that a lot of creations, machines, inventions, and so on needed those formulas to be created. I dont remember it as it has been a few years since I last used those formulas, but I have used them and can assure you they are correct. Everything is also at a very, very, VERY large distance, so even if they go at large speeds, you barely see any difference. Again with the train analogy: yes, if we are going at 150 km/h, trees right next to the train move VERY FAST past us. But a large tower, very far away, doesn't seem to move a lot. That's why these charts work, the difference in angle that the star moves relative to us on Earth is so small, that it'll only have a significant change in a very long time. The biggest difference between the train analogy and the star analogy is that in a train you can only see so far, whilst in space you can see objects incredible distances away from us. As for the water appearing on Earth: as far as I know there is no theory proven to be 100% correct, but we do have some theories which are likely to be true: meteors and meteorites, which hold water, hitting the Earth billions of years ago in large quantities is probably the most known and most likely reason. We don't have everything figured out yet, that is why we ae constantly busy with more research. As a side note: this argument can be used against the flat Earth theory aswell: why is it flat, and not a different shape? Why are there 2 balls in the sky, and why don't those fall down like everything else? I can understand that you may believe it is because of a certain diety (such as God) wanting it that way, but there is no strict proof of that either. As for the not being able to go to the Moon part: we are able to create ships to go to the Moon, but currently don't have any, as there is no need for them. We'd rather research planets like Mars first, for now. Making such a ship which is able to hold and sustain a living human for a few weeks/months and can send it to the Moon and back is an expensive and dangerous thing to do, so we wont do it if there is no expected gain out of it. "The science makes no sense" If I was standing in front of you right now, I'd ask you: *_Look me in the eyes and tell me: have you ever done any detailed research, mathematical calculations, or anything at all that doesn't just rely on "I can't understand it" or "it just doesn't make sense to me", ever in your life to actually support an argument you have made for something being impossible? Because I highly doubt it._* If you don't understand something in the globe model, or find something that doesn't make sense to you, I highly recommend you research it a little further. As for the holes in the Moon landing, I don't really know which "holes" you are talking about, so I cant comment on them much, however, if you see holes, you probably shouldn't research the flat Earth, but research the holes instead. Is it actually mathematically and physically impossible for [hole] to be true, or is there something I don't understand or am missing? I personally found a lot of holes in the flat Earth theory, as many basic observations dont seem to add up: solar and lunar eclipses, the Moon's phases, boats going over the horizon, and so on. flat earthers often either deny the proof in it's entirety, or think of arguments with no experiments or calculations to back them up, which are oftentimes things that just dont add up at all. Eg. the boat analogy: I hear "It's perspective (with no further explanation)" or "it's a faked image". As a side note: Believing in a conspiracy theory is a dangerous thing to do. The chance for such a theory to be true required a lot of luck, and is oftentimes very very low. Analogy: you park your car, come back the next day and see a traffic cone instead. Most logical answer: your car got towed away and got replaced by a traffic cone. Other, possible theories but with a very low chance of being the case: the car turned into a traffic cone. The latter _could_ be true, but there is just such a low chance of it being true that you should not believe that is the case. Have a great day, I hope you learned something.

ReasonX X To be perfectly fair, flat earthers are very much a fringe group, albeit, a very vocal one. Also itd be woefully naive (although favorable) if who were objectively and absolutely wrong just kept to themselves, though that is rarely the case. They ll try to convince their friends, tell their impressionable children, etc etc. Even assuming that they did keep to themselves youre then left with a substantial portion of society that cannot agree on fundamental truths, and thus, cannot move forward at all, in the same way how a politician might have brilliant fiscal policies but because of his views on say, slavery, noone votes for him.

That's the thing though, science is about understanding the unknown. And as we continue to push the boundary forward, people (all of them, including the ones that will grow up to become scientists in the future) will need to understand how we got to where we are today. The further we are from cave-man conditions, the more we have to explain. But when you have ideas so complex that they require a genuine patience and interest, then people stop being interested and start not caring. Not caring is the first step toward being ignorant and when that happens, you are vulnerable to predatory tactics that use pseudoscience. As someone in biology, I find it hard to believe any dietary advice and seeing how many people fall for these conspiracies is testament to a failed education system. All you've got to do, is get people interested in the truth and show them the road map we have taken from the past, astronomy following the evolution of the telescope and human thought provides far more answers and yields new questions never revealed by the current standard of education. If you have to look out for this stuff yourself and there are as many alternative paths with no fruit from the seeds, no wonder America is an information dystopia.

Looks like the Rover vehicles developed by the UK to be sent to Mars are going to be repurposed to get some new Rover tech to the Moon, possibly even buggies for transportation when construction of the NASA/ESA Moonbase is planned to start near the end of this decade. Originally the US Mission to Mars to get samples was going to use a UK made Rover, but it was decided to use American ones instead for various reasons (funding etc), so it's good to see that the technology developed is still being put to good use.

A group of people tried to prove the earth is round and sailed into the horizon with a striped flag, and if the striped flag loses stripes slowly it meant the earth was curved, the leader of flat earth society went to watch with his own telescope. And when the stripe started disappearing at the horizon he made an excuse and said it was the heat. They will make excuses no matter what because they need to be special. Think of it this way, if someone was bought to court for a murder, and the evidence was a Gun with the defendants fingerprints on it, a receipt for the gun and ammo in the defendants name, a match between the bullet in the victim and the gun, and the fact that the gun was found at the defendants house hidden under a bed. It's often a waste of time to try to convince a flat earther. What we need to understand and really dig into is WHY they choose to believe in such non sense. Most of the time they'll sound quite sane, but deep down you'll eventually find some fundamental religious belief. "The flat Earth contradicts laws of physics? Well, that proves the existence of God then." "All other objects in the cosmos are round? Well that proves that the flat Earth is a special place, made just for us". If you are the type of flat earther that says Calculus is a pseudoscience then you would have to agree that pi is not 3.1415... Are you also willing to dismiss that volume of a sphere is not 4/3pir^3 because if you do, then all that math as well goes out the window.
