My problem with the term “protective styling” is the general consensus it means using added hair: wigs, weaves, feed-in braids and twists, etc. My hair is in a “protective style” 99.9% of the time, but I don’t use added hair. I’ve been on my hair journey since 2016 and haven’t worn braids (or twists) with added hair since 2012 and have only done so four times in my life. I bought a non-lace wig in December 2022 that has bangs and doesn’t require glue and so far have only worn it once. That said, for me and many others, protective styling is with my own hair. These styles can last anywhere from three days to two weeks. My hair has thrived without using added hair. Since my journey began, my hair feels denser, healthier, and I have *definitely* retained more length than I ever thought possible.

im also getting into doing twist without any added hair but i also had a question. I know a lot of people, including the curly chemist, mentioning how important it is to stretch your hair. I was wondering if you stretch your hair before you do twist or braids?
@hereforit2347 Жыл бұрын
@@zooweellama: No. But for me braiding (plaiting) my hair *is* stretching it. I don’t leave it loose to shrink up and get tangled. But I don’t stretch my hair by blow drying or setting it, if that’s what you mean. 🥰

Penetration oils vs. protection oils is a beg game changer for me. As a professional hairdresser, I was shocked about the things that was not in our text books. Ex. Babassu oil is a great replacement for coconut oil. I use this oil before I dampen my hair and skin. It even aids in cleaning the skin on a deeper level. I use grape seed to seal my ends. High porosity with fine strands. Curl pattern ranges from 3B-4B. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I am also doing research on Afro hair routines. Ex. How much oil should one a person use? How much oil is too much oil? What are the different butters that exist, and how big are they on a molecular scale?

From watching all these videos I’ve learned how to: properly moisturize my hair and what oils to use to seal it in, about moisture cycle, that protective styles and limited flat iron heat make a huge difference and to go into wash day with a positive mindset. I have a friend who for years has been a traditional every-two-weeks press-and-curl salon goer. I don’t know if it matters, but her stylist uses a traditional thermal pressing comb on her hair and not an electric flat iron. My friend’s hair was gradually getting shorter over time. I advised her to start using oils and taking breaks from heat styling. At the onset of the pandemic, she was forced to stay out of the salon. She found a braider and for about two years was getting box braids. She also began oiling her scalp regularly. Her hair grew a LOT. So for her, protective styling with added hair worked wonders! 🥰

After my dad passed, I got my first braid install and loved it. I was able to maintain a healthy scalp while my hair was in the braids by shampooing bi-weekly, massaging my scalp and hot oil treatments. After taking them out, my hair was very manageable and it appears I kept the length. 2nd install 6 weeks later and am preparing to remove them because I miss my hair 😢. So, more protective styles for me.

I agree with good nutrition not being discussed enough... we wanna get vitamins specifically for hair growth, and it's not just that. We need to get all the minerals our body needs and some of these Multivitamins don't have all of them. Get an overall checkup so you can get exactly what's needed for your individual body because when you're deficient, it shows up in your hair.

Hello👋🏿Great tips! Recently I incorporated omega into my daily vitamin regimen. Mainly for my heart health and better health overall. All of the tips you suggest I actually do. I am now in protective mode with box braids and my hair seems dryer than when not in protective mode. So what I do while moisturizing is bring out my hand held steamer which opens up my cuticles and I apply the products to my scalp and hair while steaming to insure I'm getting the most out of my moisture sessions. Because I don't add product every day as to avoid build up, I do the green house affect with water only two or three nights a week and that activates the product on the hair. I believe my eating habits/lifestyle scalp massages, deep conditioning and a hair steamer are my saving grace as far as my hairs health is concerned. Last year I decided to do away with combs and I see less thinning and breakage. What do you think about adults using kids haircare products and vise-versa, what are the differences between the two and why or why not?

I completely agree. Way to much to emphasis on products but not enough on nutrition. Collagen peptide powder aka hydrolyzed collagen powder (with vitamin C) thickened my hair. I take collagen powder and just to be extra bone broth powder daily. Best thing I’ve ever invested in. I know collagen is all the rage now but it really works but works best when you life a low carb no sugar high fat and protein lifestyle. I’ve gone carnivore with my diet/lifestyle. No sugars and carbs. Just nutrient dense meat. It’s funny when I emphasized getting healthy to loose weight, everything like my skin and hair fell into place vs. when my mindset was loose weight to get healthy. A little bit of cardio but not to much emphasis on it with some moderate weight lifting the hair will thrive.

With this, i was just wondering if we should stretch our hair even if we dont plan on wearing it out? I usually see people talk about avoiding wash n gos and opt for braid outs or twist outs but I was looking into doing mini/medium sized twist. Should i stretch my hair before doing my twist or will they be enough to stretch my hair? And also one more question, no matter what style im doing (mini twist, braid outs etc) with stretched hair, how do you go about re-moisturizing without it reverting? I plan to go two weeks in between wash days but i doubt my hair can go two weeks without re applying some moisture. would i have to wash every week?

Unpopular POV from a stylist: protective styles aren't protecting anything if the hair is not properly prepped before styling. Also, it isn't protective if you keep it for more than 6 weeks. Most people do not properly wash and nourish their scalp while in a protective style. Although the hair grows, the hair shaft becomes so dry that when taken out, there is breakage along with the fall out. Also, over steaming will throw off the protein moisture balance in the hair, which leads to limp and lifeless locs. Please use a steamer infrequently. Not all natural hair needs this service. That said, everything else mentioned in the video is 100%.
