$3 PT Cruiser tailgate switch fix (WILL NOT OPEN)

Here is a cheap and quick fix for a failed Pt cruiser liftgate switch.
I removed the interior covers and installed a switch from Amazon WORKS GREAT!!!
Switches came in a pack of 5 for under $15($3 each), they are aluminum with a waterproof seal and come with pre wired pigtails.

Thank you for the video. I did it some time ago and it is working very well on my wifes pt cruiser. I didn't even solder the wires. A simple solution that will probably last much more than the touch. And if it doesn't last it is very easy to replace the switch. This touch stops working in all pt cruisers.

I did this with a larger metal momentary switch, and it took very little time and worked great. Due to the limited space, I just used a drill + bits for the pilot hole(s), and stepped up the drill bits from smaller to larger a few times. Then I used a Dremel with a drum sanding bit to get the hole larger, and ended up getting a perfectly round hole. Also, I used those round colored sticker dots from the .99 store as a template. Perfect size ! I put the sticker dot where I wanted my switch, colored over it with a permanent black marker, + peeled it off. It leaves a perfectly stenciled circle to Dremel out. Great permanent fix for very little time, and money compared to OE switch. Just a few tips for others interested in this fix

My switch failed and i found out it died when i went to pick up a headboard. I had to tie it to the roof!! Now i have a quick fix!!

My switch went out too. This fix worked perfectly. Thank you! The new switch works better, in my opinion. My PT has a keyhole, so at least I was able to use the hatch till I installed the new switch. Also, the trim comes off and goes back on easily. I used an angle drill head adapter and a step drill bit for the 1/2 inch hole.

8:30 The little grey wiring harness with a black and red that you are hooking up to the switch. Do you know where I could find a replacement for that? Mine is fried from the previous owner

No. I dont know were to source that connector. You could always wire it straight or add some spade connectors

@@sideyardmechanic No, the plastic male head that connects from the OEM push switch into the plastic housing that runs into the greater wiring. I was trying to find a name for that type of connector so I could just leave the original on the OEM touch pad/ source some for future failures of this - since I live near an ocean. Im not that familiar with automotive electronic names :) thanks!

​@@sideyardmechanic not sure what's wrong with my switch But every time I drive & pressure the break pedal I get a click noise & gotta pull over get out open the latch with the key shut it & lock it then it. ( MIGHT ) be ok. If not its a noisy drive all day😭😭

I have a 04 with a broken hatch handle. I wonder if the 06 and up redesign ones would fit in the same holes?

It might fit in the location but the older latch is mechanical and the newer ones are electronic. You might have to run power and ground wires along with changing the lower latch.

@@sideyardmechanic I may just go ahead and try it. We can't buy them new anymore and all the ones I find in the bone yard or ebay look like they are about to break like mine. Running power is easy just hope the hole is the same size.

My Car does not have a key lock on the trunk. It has an electric lock that is operated by the fob. Or the switch on the front door but it locks and unlocks normally.

If all of the doors are locked, the switch becomes disabled; no power goes to it.

Yes, the switch will only work if the doors are unlocked just like the OE switch.
