Watching this from the USA as a native-born Indian, it shows how India's long passenger trains are its "interstate highway system" surface-travel equivalent for the people. The gritty appearance of the engines, the heavy clacking sound of the steel wheels on steel tracks, and the sound of the air horns as they cut through the air conveys a sense of seriousness, reliability, determination and purpose and not just as a perpetually on-the-brink adjunct to automobiles the way Amtrak is here. ( I am intentionally not comparing this to European rail as I lack any direct experience of that. )

For those who amazed by by push pull system, Railway is trying to increase avg speed of trains on Delhi Mumbai route, Using 2 locomotives increases acceleration and deceleration faster so as to increase avg, speed.

Hi Jitu, I can confirm this much: On 10th Oct. I took 12264 Pune Duronto for Pune, which leaves at 10.55 am. I had reached NZM by 10 am or so. I saw first 22221 (probably the only Rajdhani which is a regular push pull service) reach NZM (and as I had read in the papers about it being converted to push pull) I duly verified it was the case. And shortly after that at about 10.40/45 am after announcement that it was running 10 mts. late, I was surprised to see 12953 Rajdhani reach NZM and it too was a push pull service. However, when I returned from Pune to Delhi via Mumbai, and took the 12951 Rajdhani, we crossed the 12954 Rajdhani either at Ratlam or Nagda, there I noticed that it wasn't in the push pull mode. May be on 10th Oct. when it arrived, IR/WR might have been experimenting with 2953 in push pull mode.

@@RailtakbyJitu I think between Oct.Nov. itself 22221/22 started running regularly in push pull mode. But what about 2951/52 and 2953/54? I think first 2953/54 August Kranti would be operated on push pull or PP mode because it has nearly 16-18 stops between NZM-MMCT. what do you think. I think it will be a while before 2951/52 Raj. will be operated in a PP mode.

Push pull trains with WAP 7 at each end..... only CR Rajdhani is successful. Reason is Between Delhi & Mumbai,, It has to tackle two ghat section 1.Sahyadri near Kasara and Vindhya ranges between Bhopal and Itarsi. Push pull does not need banker locos, their attachment and detachment detachment. and time for it. Western railway track from Delhi to Mumbai is through plains. Their push pull trains are on WAP5 Locos. WAP 5 weighs 70 tones where as WAP 7 weighs 125 tonnes. So it limits speed due to non compatible tracks on both railways. This factor limits total number of bogies driven by WAP 5 as loco designed to go faster but with limited bogies. WAP 7 can going along 24 coaches normal and 20 coaches AC but includes two generator cars. These are the limiting factors. All trains have to run at lower speeds while crossing bridges. Less number of bridges, faster the train. Geographical constrains, Condition of track and it's capacity, age old turns, are also To be taken in account. Indian railways are doing best they can.

Usually push-pull implies the use of a non traction pilot car. When locomotives are used at both ends and the rear one is commanded from the front, the designation is top-and-tail. Rui Pina Irrespective of what wikipedia says, in the real rail world, push pull means having two motive power units, one at each end. One unit is pulling and the other pushing, simultaneously. It’s one form of “distributed power “ operation, where the traction power units are distributed along the consist as opposed to having them all at the leading end. What you mentioned, is practiced in some suburban or intercity passenger trains, mainly in the US, with a diesel locomotive at one end and a control cab in the other end.
