Surreal! My first car was a 1971 Opel Manta. I drove it until the wheels fell off!

I gladly agree! The Manta would be a hit... on the road! ... Okay, some performance data should still increase, such as battery capacity, the top speed as well, the sprint time down, performance values up, appropriate for a small sporty Manta of the 21st century. All this with a total weight of no more than 1350 kilograms - that's my idea!

Thanks for featuring the Manta e mod and highlighting its relatively stripped down specs. It makes a refreshing change from the Tonka toy / SUV shapes that seem to dominate both the electric and ICE markets at present. I certainly consider getting one if the price was right, (happy to lose the front LED grille panel if that would make it more affordable, but the sport seats are non-negotiable). Keep up the good work.

As a big fan of the original Manta A, I was ready to knock it. But hold your horses, they have done a good job. I have been saying for years, EVs should have gearboxes and smaller motors. The lazy non-mechanically minded kept shooting me down, as it is easier just to stuff a bigger motor in. So seeing 108bhp which is the same as the early Nissan Leaf, but with a gearbox, it is quite a bit quicker and most importantly, there is driver input!!!!!! And is not carting round a big ball of unneeded copper wire. Yes a very good job, although with that front, I would be concerned with stone chips. But that would be my only area of concern. Well done Opel!!

I'd be interested if it had 2-3 times the power and four times the range so it could match the average ICE in winter.

Alas then it would be the size of every other EV tank on the road. Then the motor would need to be bigger. Then the battery would have to be bigger. Then the motor would have to be bigger. Then the battery would have to be bigger. 😀 It is a vicious circle while Lithuim Ion is the only practical battery.

Really? The Manta GT/E had 120 bhp. It was nice, but fairly slow... And who cares about the range, if you can simply charge at home.. But I do agree that the 'sporty' EV's trend to be underpowered compared to their ICE equivalents.. I would assume to subtly keep people buying ICE cars for fun. Until the Chinese come along and make it happen, ending the reign of European brands..

I think when it comes to ICE it’s important to consider more than just range. Yes the range of ICE is great, but they spew out toxic, climate destroying fumes which are fly tipped to the atmosphere for every metre of that range.

Only about 3.2% of CO2 in the atmosphere is man-made (less than multiple volcanic eruptions in the past) and coal-fired power plants produce 50% more of it than cars and trucks. Shifting to majority fossil fuel produced energy doesn't do much to reduce what isn't a significant problem in the first place and lithium ion mining isn't exactly good for the planet.

@@Noah_E Oh oh, alarm bells. Okay, nonsense, please get yourself informed properly... 1. Don't use coal plants, duh. 2. Fossil fuel means drilling, spilling, ruining, than transporting across the globe (more fuel), refining (more pollution and fuel) and then burning. Once. With perhaps 65% efficiency at best? Lithium is used for fossil fuels and engines as well, so yeah. Also, it can be recycled. Burned fuel can't be. Mining isn't good, but if you can endless recycle afterwards it is obviously a lot better than all the pollution and waste in getting fossil fuels out only to burn once. 3. Whatever the percentage of CO2 is, it is rising far too rapidly. Nothing can adjust. Same with temperatures. If it takes 100.000 years for the temperature to raise 2-3 degrees, it's probably fine. But in 100 years? Nothing can really adept, and so catastrophies happen.

The Manta A was the dream car of my youth in the 1970s that I could never afford. My bedroom wall was plastered with cuttings from magazines. Guess what? I can now afford one and would buy one of these tomorrow! C'mon Opel get yer finger out and build some!

This looks amazing. Reminds me of the Holden Torana a legend here in Australia. I hear you, retro motorcycles are huge (but with reliable modern engines and safety) why shouldn’t cars have some retro options.

I love the rear lights! Wish I could say the same about the front. Having a massive a** screen at the front does not fill me with confidence. I wish they didn't go overboard in that department.

Awesome car. We had that Manta. 2 door EV´s have less weight, but should have a range of at least 200mls. Only than, it can be a substitute for a normal ICE car. 100mls max is for city use, you cant make a reasonable trip. Even the Fiat 500e has 200mls range.

Looks great, sounds crap. 30kwh, gear stick, boot battery. Would need a modern skateboard chassis, 60kwh absolute minimum and make it sporty. Love retro electric cars like this and the I'd buzz, but they need to be modern and with useable range etc. Oh and actually get made. Sick of concept cars 98% of the time either don't come out, or are nothing like the concept.
