Did a helluva lot of research into it and I figured I wouldn’t be able to handle the crazy amount of stress that comes with working as a medic; extremely rewarding but stressful nonetheless - ended up applying for optometry and received 4 offers from my 5 choices. Hey man great video! I have a predicted 42 in the IB with 7s in all three sciences and I was planning to apply to those exact unis. Your grades were above the cut-off for all of them so do you know if there was a major factor as to why you were rejected from the first three unis? I mean I know that your ukcat scores were avg but anything else your application was lacking in?
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey Zain, thank you so much :) Congrats on the prediction, that's amazing! That's a good question... and to be honest, although i believe my UKCAT played a very large role, looking back on it my PS might have been too cheesy or surface level. It didn't express an ideal understanding of what being a doctor would be like, nor did I explain my motivations well. And after those two things sometimes it's just down to luck. I really believe that since there are so many applicants with such great grades and experiences, sometimes even if you are a good candidate you just won't make it for whatever reason and I think that's pretty unfair but sometimes that is the reality of it! Regardless, you put yourself in the best possible position you can to increase your chances, and then the rest is up to chance!

Applying to unis in the UK seems so complicated. Here in Austria we don't have interviews really. You either go into a degree that has no limit of how many students they accept (simply bc not that many ppl go into the degree and experience of how many they can take on) or the ones that have limits (bc there are too many applicants) in which case you have an entrance exam. To get into med school here there's a huge entrance exam bc obviously a lot want to enter. I have a couple of fiends that are trying it for the 2nd/3rd time this year. Ppl study around 6-12months for this exam. Seems very intense ngl but this is only the case in med school. Other entrance exams aren't THAT extreme as far as I am aware. Personally I study Technical Chemistry at Vienna University of Technology. My degree doesn't have a limit (TU Wien is known to be rather hard so more ppl that want to study chemistry just go to University of Vienna). All I had to do was was apply, then do a little self-assesment test (just for myself) and then had a "talk" with a professor and a student who gave me advice and just cleared up any question to make sure we know what we're getting into and that's it.

Hey , can you make a video about your Medicine interview experience e.g. at Cambridge. Also what do you think were the main factors that made you get in the second time round. Thanks
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey Pierre! I talk about my medicine interview experiences in one of my earlier videos kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIvVoJmMl5tqhrs. Hmm, I would say 1. very high UKCAT score 2. increased experience in the medical field gained over the years 3. my ability to perform well in interviews. Also as a side note, I just wanted to get into medical school more than ever and I spent the better part of 8 months studying day in and day out (I'm talking 6-8h a day) on all aspects of the UK and Canadian med school applications with little time for anything else. You spoke about not studying only the sciency subjects. I asked SO many people what the best choices would be for A level and everyone said ‘just do the sciences’. I’m starting sixth form next Tuesday with Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths. Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love STEM but I’d probably love RS or something along those lines too. I have done a wide range of subjects at GCSE (I’ve got 11 GCSEs) - I can elaborate on this if it helps. But do I need to carry on this variation to A level as well? Also I’m doing an EPQ not sure what about 🤷🏽♀️ Help?
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey! Check what subjects are REQUIRED by universities to apply to medicine and 100% do those. Then there are subjects like math and physics which can help improve your application if you do well in them as it shows a different kind of thinking. Other than that do something that interests you and do well in it. After all, you have to score highly in your A levels to apply for med so do something you know you can do well in! I don't know what RS or EPQ are?

Kharma Medic RS is Religious Studies - you may have heard people refer to it as RE. EPQ is the Extended Project Qualification whereby you have to write (1000 words or so I think) about your own research regarding a topic that interests you. Gives you something to show your passion about, something to write about in your PS and refer to in your interview
@haniaarain49666 жыл бұрын
@@SanaKhan-wf4ec Hi Sana, Sorry to butt into your conversation but I thought I should let you know that you can chose RS as your 4th subject if your school allows you to take 4. With the new A level reforms most schools have scrapped external AS exams and only allow students to do 3 subjects from the beginning but from the sound of it your school is letting you do 4. In this case if they allow you to drop it at the end of year 12 (unless you wish to carry on with 4) it would not be a problem. I did Bio Chem Maths and RS for AS, dropped RS at A2 and also did the EPQ. Totally workable combination.

Hania Arain No need to say sorry sis, I need guidance from anyone who can offer it to me through their experience! I’ve been told that Further Maths is really hard but my dilemma is that I really love Maths. I guess I want to attempt it and see how hard it is for myself. Would you suggest I do a 5 subject thing with RS just to check it out for a while or just leave it as a back up option if Further Maths doesn’t suit me?

@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey there glad you liked it! That is a pretty difficult question to answer now over text. I plan to make an entire video series on all the most common interview questions so it will come soon! But until then, there really isn't one right answer. The correct way to go about this is to soul search deep within you and actually realize why you want to! It doesn't have to be something profound but it needs to be true to you. And then you can talk about how your life experiences built upon that reason or how that reason caused you to go out and find or encounter life experiences that solidified your reasons for you. Something like that!

@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Taylor :) It sounds like you are doing a good amount of extracurriculars. The only thing I would suggest is to maybe read some medicine related books to give yourself a better understanding of what being a doctor might be like ('doing right' is ethics focused and very good, 'when breath becomes air' is an amazing recounting of experiences by a neurosurgeon). Reading books like this can better prepare you for the interview when the time comes. Also just speak to doctors if you can about their work, why they enjoy it, any downsides, etc..! Lastly, find anything you enjoy doing, and just do it consistently. WHen it comes time for interviews or writing your PS, you'll be able to reflect on it well and with passion! Enjoy your summer :)

So yeh, Warwick seems to be my only choice and I know that is a massive long shot, is it allowed to just put one choice on your UCAS? Thank you 🙏🏻

Well there are a lot more places to apply to in the UK so a lot more choice. We have only 5 medical schools in Ireland and each uni has about 50 places for irish students and the rest is reserved for international students. I also found the UCAT much easier than the HPAT but that’s just me personally, it might not be the same for everyone. We also don’t have personal statements or interviews. Everything is based on your academic performance and the HPAT whereas in the UK your non academics matter a lot more. Hope this helps anyone who wants this information :)

Do u have any advice on what work experience I should do??
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey Amina! Yeah for sure :) At the end of the day, the exact work experience you do isn't the most important. It is what you take away from it. If you can't get an amazing shadow placement following a surgeon or a highly sought after hospital volunteering position, don't worry. Yes it is great to do something like that so you can a) show your dedication to the field but b) realize yourself your motivations for medicine and whether it is for you or not. The important thing is that in whatever work experience you end up doing, you will have experiences and gain skills that are directly translatable to being a doctor or the field of medicine. Don't restrict yourself to a hospital-centric work experience :) If that is what you are looking for because you enjoy it so much, reach out to your GP, your local hospital, and see if they have any volunteering you can do! It's a good place to start

amazing tips to take care of and a really helpful video do you have any idea of what an average score would be requiredfor ukcat to get into university of edinburgh, do they even consider the ukcat when looking at which students should be selected.
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Aditya! I have no idea! What is considered a competitive score changes each year. You need to do thorough research to make sure you know where you are applying !

My schol doesnt give offer that many gcses so i ended up leaving with three 9s three 8s one 7 and a 5(in art ). i also got a D in textiles last year. Do you think these grades are good enough to apply because most applicants will have more gcses than me and wouldnt have failed a subject.
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey! I would definitely check in with the schools you are applying to and ask your university advisers as well! Do thorough research so you know your circumstances well 😊

Hi kharma medic, do you have an idea of the cut off threshold UkCAt score for the graduate medicine course (A102) at Kings? I have heard mixed things
@KharmaMedic6 жыл бұрын
Hey! I actually have no idea. It likely changes year to year and depends on how competetive the applications are. You need to do some solid research to make sure you apply to the right uni's based on your application strengths and weaknesses. Maybe call up the uni and ask? Also search google for info given out based on the freedom of information act. Good luck!

If you do an undergraduate degree how many years does it take or will it be until you can apply for medical school

A British surgeon who works in Scotland, told me the UKCAT test just ranks, because he marks them and lets the top 40% in to medicine.. That is all it does. It is not an aptitude test. If 10,000 people set it, they let the top 40% into medical and dental schools. It is to stop parents taking medical schools to court, when their straight A genius teenage son or daughter, fails to get into medical school or dental school. The UKCAT test is just a mind game. Doing well in it means nothing, except medical schools let you in. Sorry. I am a Biochemist and Ecologist. Kharma , you may have taken the test seriously, but you were duped

I’m a graduate in psychology I’m trying to apply for medicine. Medicinal student who offers his services to help others told me that my choices are limited specially cause I don’t have English and maths gcse B or above and he also said I’m limited because of the fact that it’s psychology and not a lot of uni take that for gem .... so told me to maybe to consider one year college to do access to medicine course .... my gcse were c grades. So I dont know what to do now he said I can still try apply but my options will be limited cause they look at your gcse and few unis consider psycholgy bsc as a science. Please can anyone offer any advice?😭 my other gcse is English IGCSE i do not know if they accept and that's at a grade c, i do not have additional science and only have core science grade c. I've missed college enrolments and don't know what to do
